Second-year forward Mathew Campagna scored two goals in leading the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team to a 4-2 victory over the UOIT Ridgebacks on Thursday night (Jan. 26) at Varsity Arena.
Third-year Ridgebacks forward Connor Jarvis opened the scoring 13 minutes into the contest and UOIT held a one-goal lead at the end of the first period.
The Blues evened the score early in the second frame as Campagna stripped a Ridgeback of the puck and used a beautiful deke to beat UOIT netminder Tyson Teichmann for his sixth goal of the season.
Campagna added his second of the game just over four minutes later, receiving a pass from Joshua Villaflor before sending the puck into the top corner of the net. The Blues were up 2-1 heading into the final frame.
Fellow sophomore forward Aidan Wallace put the Blues up 3-1 with just under three minutes remaining as he skated down the ice and sent a booming shot over Teichmann's glove.
UOIT was able to bring the game within one with 1:27 to go, but veteran forward Dean Klomp sealed the victory with an empty net goal 44 seconds later.
Fourth-year Blues netminder Michael Nishi posted 37 saves in the victory.
The Varsity Blues return to action this Saturday, January 28 as they host the Queen's Gaels at Varsity arena. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
