Lions top Hawks in battle of nationally ranked teams
The No. 5 nationally-ranked York University Lions women's soccer team earned a 2-0 victory over the No. 9 Laurier Golden Hawks in its home opener on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 3) at Alumni Field.
Prior to last year, the Lions had not defeated the Golden Hawks since 2009 but they are now riding a three-game winning streak over their division rivals. The Lions are still undefeated on the year at 3-0-0 while the Golden Hawks fell to 0-1-2 with the loss.
Third-year forward Christina Morelli (Markham, Ont.) opened the scoring in the 18th minute, finding the back of the net after a beautiful cross into the box from rookie forward Sia Papadopoulos (Maple, Ont.).
Nour Ghoneim (Aurora, Ont.), the reigning CIS player of the year, had two early chances that she couldn't convert but finally capitalized in the 64th minute, finishing off a great pass from Dina Ricco (Bolton, Ont.) for a 2-0 lead.
That was all the Lions would need, as goalkeeper Taylor Grant (Brampton, Ont.) stood tall and made five saves for the clean sheet.
Laurier goalkeeper Ashley Almeida faced 10 shots on goal and made eight saves.
The Lions will be back in action on Wednesday (Sept. 7) when they travel to Hamilton, Ont., to face the McMaster Marauders at Ron Joyce Stadium. Kick-off is set for 6pm.

Voyageurs run past Paladins
The Laurentian women's soccer team played their third game of the season on Saturday afternoon against RMC, coming away with victory to improve to 2-1 on the season.
It didn't take the Voyageurs long to get on the scoreboard, as just nine minutes into the first half Megan Chiovitti scored her first career OUA goal off a pass from Megan Gallo.
That would be it for scoring in the first half despite the Voyageurs outshooting RMC 4-1.
The Voyageurs wasted little time in the second half, as just four minutes into the half Sam Selkirk scored with an assist going to Michelle Walsh.
The Vees were quick to add to the 2-0 lead, as five minutes later in the 54th minute Megan Gallo netted her first career OUA goal to put the Vees up 3-0.
RMC would climb back within one in the 59th minute, but it was too little too late. The Vees closed the door for good on RMC when Sara Fitzgerald scored in the 70th minute off a pass from Megan Ferguson.
Caitlin McNamara earned the victory in net needing to make only two saves in the match. Voyageurs coach Rob Gallo said that "the girls played a good team game but tomorrow will be a good test for us" as the Vees travel to Queen's for a 12pm kick-off.
You can catch the Voyageurs at home again on Sunday, September 11th at 12PM at the Laurentian soccer fields.

No. 7 Queen's downs Nipissing in season opener
KINGSTON, Ont. (September 3, 2016) - The No.7 Gaels (1-0) defeated the visiting Nipissing Lakers (1-2) 2-1 at Miklas-McCarney Field Saturday afternoon in their 2016 home opener.
GAME FLOW
Queen's started their regular season schedule with a fast paced attack, getting the only shots of the opening 25 minutes. Nipissing got on the board with their first shot of the game in the 29th minute, when Selena Innamorati converted on a penalty kick.
The Gaels stormed back before the half was over, scoring twice in quick succession with goals from Jenny Wolever (Toronto) and Rachel Radu (Ottawa). Gee-Gees continue perfect start
The Gee-Gees women's soccer team continued its perfect start to the 2016 season with a win over the Carleton Ravens on Saturday afternoon. With big plays from one of their newest members, Breanna Burton, and a strong defence, the Gee-Gees came out on top 2-0.
The biggest challenge for the Gee-Gees in this match seemed to be the Carleton Ravens goalkeeper, Rada Mintchev. "Carleton was difficult to break down in the first half," explained Gee-Gees head coach Steve Johnson. "Their goalkeeper was up to everything that we threw at her." Mintchev stopped 15 of Ottawa's 17 shots on goal and was extremely active in breaking up passing plays in the box.
The Gee-Gees found a way to get through Mintchev and the Ravens' defence. "We were really fortunate to have our attack come through at the end," commented Burton, who made multiple big plays for the Gee-Gees in the match. "We were super happy with our performance today."
The two Ottawa goals came in the second half and were made by Burton, unassisted, and by midfielder Faythe Lou, assisted by Vanessa El-Asmar.

Second-year striker Natasha Klasios scored two first-half goals and added one assist in leading the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over the Trent Excalibur on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 3) at Varsity Stadium.
Klasios, the reigning OUA East rookie of the year, continued her hot start, having now scored four goals over the last two games. Klasios opened the scoring for the Blues in the 19th minute after making a beautiful turn between two Excalibur defenders before finding the open net.
Trent responded in the 30th minute as third-year midfielder Kaitlyn Steffler converted a long strike just over the fingertips of Toronto goalkeeper Tori Edgar.

Mustangs offence shines in win vs Algoma
LONDON, Ont. – A pair of hat tricks from Amanda Boyle and Julia Crnjac helped lead the Western Mustangs to a 10-0 win over the Algoma Thunderbirds on Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Field.
"We have a very talented group of first-year players, very deep, and that quality showed today," said Mustangs head coach Martin Painter. "It was good for some of them who haven't started to get a start in, get some minutes, and to show their quality, which they did."
Boyle's trio of goals all came within a 13-minute span on the game clock, scoring in the 31st, 41st, and 54th minutes. Crnjac scored in a similarly rapid fashion, scoring Western's final three goals of the contest in 15 minutes, including two goals in the 85th minute alone.
Three other Mustangs made their way onto the scoreboard in the win, with Paige Howard recording two goals, and Amy Lintack and Lauren Ince scoring one each. Ince's goal came just prior to the 20th minute and was the first of her CIS career.
"I'm thankful that the coaches gave me a chance to start, I'm really glad to get [a goal] under my belt," said the first-year defender when asked about getting her first CIS goal.
The Western offence started the game efficiently, controlling the time of possession decisively throughout the first half. Western outshot the Thunderbirds by a wide margin in the opening 45 minutes, firing 19 shots in the half compared to one from Algoma. Western tallied five goals in the half, with two from Howard, one from Ince, and two from Boyle.
The Mustangs continued to roll in the second half, as they fought for five more goals in the match. The Western defence remained impenetrable throughout the game, as rookie goalie Julianna Guglietti kept the Thunderbirds scoreless.
Algoma was led by their first-year goalkeeper Alexis Trigiani-Kirkwood, who had 11 saves in the game and turned away multiple breakaway chances from the Mustangs.
"We're working on developing good habits and consistency," said Painter on what his team's focusing on heading into tomorrow's game. "Working on our mental strength, imagination and creativity going forward and our discipline defensively. I thought we were able to do that for 90 minutes [today]."
Western will be back in action tomorrow, September 3 when they will once again host the Algoma Thunderbirds. The match is scheduled to start at 12 p.m. and will be held at Mustangs Field.
