No. 3 Gee-Gees survive a scare from visiting Varsity Blues
The Gee-Gees women's soccer team improved its record to 5-0-0 on Sunday afternoon, playing through a scrappy match with the Toronto Varsity Blues to claim a 2-1 win.
Third-year striker Sophie Curtis scored the game-winning goal on a sliding effort at the side of the crease to finish a scrambled play. Toronto keeper Tori Edgar had come out to play a chance by Ottawa's Victoria Marchand, and after getting a hand on the ball it squibbled out to the side of the goal mouth. The entire match, and the second half in particular, was a scrappy back-and-forth effort. Each team was assessed a yellow card and much of the play took place in midfield.
Toronto made things tight in the second half after Ottawa led 2-0 at the break. The Blues broke though with a score from 2015 OUA East Rookie of the Year Natasha Klasios in minute 66 and peppered the Ottawa net with nine shots in the second half. Gee-Gees keeper Julie-Anne Lamarche was called upon to make two outstanding saves – one at the top bar and one sprawling to her right, to preserve the victory.
Victoria Marchand opened the scoring for Ottawa; her third goal of the season came at the 17 minute mark. Marchand's speed continued to create chances for Ottawa, including the Curtis goal.
Ottawa, ranked no. 3 in last week's CIS Top Ten, is in first place as the only undefeated team in the OUA East.

Voyageurs win northern battle over Nipissing
The Laurentian Voyageurs women's soccer team faced their northern rival, the Nipissing Lakers, on Sunday afternoon in Sudbury and came away with a 3-1 victory.
The match marked the opening leg of the Riley Gallo Cup and was the first contest to count towards the newly minted '705 Challenge Cup'. The game began as a back and forth affair with each team having their chances but late in the first half the Voyageurs applied some pressure and were rewarded as Sarah Sanford collected a pass inside the 18 yard box, side stepped a defender and slid home the opening goal in the 36th minute.
The second half picked up where the first half ended, with the Voyageurs applying relentless pressure and they were rewarded in the 51st minute as Michelle Walsh made a strong run down the side of the pitch before sending a low cross in that Catherine Rocca deflected in off the far post. The Voyageurs' second goal seemed to light a spark under the Lakers and they upped their attack looking to get back into the game. The rest of the game was played at a torrid pace with chances at each end of the pitch but it would be the Voyageurs adding to their tally in the 83rd minute as Mia De Gasperis fed Amanda Kwan a wonderful ball into space and Kwan would make no mistake, pushing the lead to 3-0. The Lakers finally broke through in the 85th minute as Selena Innamerati converted a penalty kick but it was too little too late as the Voyageurs took the game 3-1.
The Voyageurs now get ready to face the Trent Excalibur when they come to town next Saturday for a 12pm kick off.
Laurentian University's Department of Athletics is home to 23 varsity sports teams. The Voyageurs decorated history of pride and tradition includes 62 provincial championships as well as 10 national championships in 54 years of competition.

Gryphons settle for 0-0 draw with Brock to remain undefeated
GUELPH, ON – Sunday afternoon at the Gryphon Soccer Complex the Gryphons women's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw with the Brock Badgers. Through four games this season, the Gryphons remain undefeated at 2-0-2 (wins-losses-draws) while the Badgers sit at 1-3-1.
The Gryphons dominated play throughout the second half but were never able to put the finishing touches on any of the chances they were able to create. One of the best scoring chances of the match came on a long range strike from veteran defender Sam Taylor (London, ON) who saw her shot deflect off the bar and out of harm's way.
The rookie striker tandem of Victoria Hinchliffe and Jacquie Preza formed the Gryphons duo up front. Second year striker Hayley Howes subbed into the game pushing Preza out wide, but nobody on the Gryphons Sunday afternoon possessed the final touch needed to break the Badger defence.
Third year Criminal Justice and Public Policy major Libby Brenneman earned the clean sheet in net for the Gryphons. The chances were few and far between for the Badgers, but Brock was able to break through midway through the second half, only to see their shot on a partial breakaway miss wide of the target.
While the Gryphons lack of finishing was frustrating at times on Sunday, the team's defensive performance was once again a positive. Through four matches this season, the Gryphons have conceded just twice, with both of those goals coming in the season opener followed by three consecutive clean sheets.
The Gryphons will now head to Hamilton for a Wednesday night showdown with the McMaster Marauders. The Gryphons were able to edge the Marauders 1-0 when the two teams met back on Sept. 2 in what was the Gryphons home opener.

Ravens hammer Ryerson 3-0
OTTAWA, ON — The Ravens women's soccer team repeated last year's heavy defeat of Ryerson with another 3-0 win at MNP Park on Sunday afternoon to extend their unbeaten run to two games.
Three second-half goals propelled the Ravens to their second straight shutout victory, as the team's back four was nearly impenetrable over the course of the 90 minutes.
Forward Nicole Filipow (Edmonton, AB) scored for a second straight game and third-year player Emily Copeland Dinan (Ottawa, ON) netted two to give Carleton a third win in five games to begin the season.
The first half got off to a quiet start, as scoring chances were scarce. Filipow and Copeland Dinan had one of the first good scoring opportunities of the game, as they played a give-and-go that ended with a Dinan shot on goal – one that was absorbed by Ryerson keeper Brittney Clendenan.
Filipow continued to excel in a playmaking role in the first half, providing Vanessa Germano (Ottawa, ON) with an open look on goal, but her on-target blast was pushed aside by the extended arm of Clendenan.
With the momentum remaining in Carleton's favour as the second half got underway, Emily Copeland Dinan opened the scoring in the 49th minute. She was the beneficiary of a beautifully placed cross from veteran winger Amanda Ngwafusi (Ottawa, ON), whose sublime entry pass from the right flank made its way across the six-yard box where Copeland Dinan made no mistake to put the Ravens up 1-0.
The lead was doubled just six minutes later as Nicole Filipow scored her third goal of the season off of a rebound from a powerful strike by sweeper Sarah Zutrauen (Ottawa, ON).
The Ravens continued to move the ball around the field with ease, as Carleton looked put the game out of reach. First-year midfielder Tamana Ashrafi (Ottawa, ON) proved to be an effective ball distributor in the middle of the park, controlling the flow of the game and locating teammates in open spaces.
In the 65th minute, Nicole Filipow dribbled past two Rams defenders and laced a shot off of the cross-bar which kindly bounced in front of goal for Emily Copeland Dinan, who made the easy tap in for her second tally of the contest and the final marker of the game.
With today's win, Carleton remains unbeaten in its past 10 games against Ryerson dating back to 2011 season, a run which has resulted in nine wins and only one tie in that time frame.
The Ravens will look to extend their winning streak to three games this Friday, as Carleton welcomes the RMC Palladins to town for an early evening matchup.

Di Tella's first half hat trick leads Western over Waterloo
LONDON, Ont. – Fourth-year midfielder Stefanie Di Tella recorded a season-high three goals to lead the Western Mustangs to a 5-1 win over the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday afternoon at Warrior Field.
With the win, Western remains in second place in the OUA West Division standings, chasing York's undefeated record with a 4-0-2 record of their own. With Waterloo's loss to the Mustangs, the Warriors remain in eighth place in the OUA West with an 0-4-1 record.
After netting her first goal of the season against Algoma last weekend, Di Tella continued her scoring display on Sunday with three goals in the first half. The Mississauga native was invovlved in all four of Western's first half goals, assisting on Western's third goal late in the frame.
Two other Mustangs found the back of the net in a strong win for Western as veterans Amanda Boyle and Julia Crnjac chipped in one goal each to help seal the victory. Both Boyle and Crnjac now have seven goals on the year, good for second on the OUA leaderboard.
Western's first goal came from Di Tella only three minutes into the match, and the offence did not slow down from there. Western managed to create 11 shots in the first half against Waterloo's goalie Findley Dunn, leading to two more goals from Di Tella and one from Boyle late in the half.
The second half was more tightly contested, as Western was held to two shots throughout the rest of the game, compared to five from Waterloo. Laura Kay put the Warriors on the board late in the second 45, but Crnjac would chip in one final goal for the Mustangs with less than two minutes to go in the game to give the purple and white a 5-1 win.
The Mustangs will be back in action next Sunday, September 18, when they travel back to Waterloo to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
