Lakers hand Gee-Gees first loss of the season
When they needed a win the most, the Nipissing Lakers women's soccer team came up huge.
With just four games left on the schedule and needing at least three wins to give themselves a shot at the post-season, the Lakers put in maybe their most complete effort Saturday afternoon, picking up one of the bigger upsets of the season.
The Lakers beat the previously undefeated Ottawa Gee Gees 2-1, thanks to a late goal by Kristen Farkas and an overall great effort.
Farkas scored in the 89th minute to give Nipissing the lead and they held on in the final seconds to grab the much-needed three points.
While there weren't many scoring chances through the early part of the game, both teams showed their skill and speed.
It took almost the full 45 minutes of the first half before a goal was scored, as Delaney Borsato found the back of the net on a penalty kick.
With the goal, the Lakers led at the halftime break.
Less than 20 minutes into the second half, the Gee Gees tied the game after a forward broke in alone on Carlee Bennard and got a shot past the veteran goalkeeper.
With the score 1-1 and both teams seemingly on their way to a draw, the Lakers pushed late and Farkas fired the game-winner home with just minutes left on the clock.
The win, Nipissing's fourth of the season, moves them just five points behind Toronto for the final playoff spot, but the Lakers have a game in hand, which they'll use tomorrow against Carleton.
Bennard wasn't overly busy, but finish with 10 saves for her third win of the season.
The Lakers are back in action at Noon Sunday, when they face the Carleton Ravens in another must-win for the team.

Voyageurs play to scoreless draw
SUDBURY, ON - In their first home game in almost a month, the Voyageurs women's soccer team looked to pick up valuable late season points against a formidable Carleton squad. To add to the importance of this match, the Voyageurs needed a victory or tie to break a fourth place tie with Queen's in the OUA's East division.
On paper, these two teams match up fairly evenly, especially on offense with LU recording 22 goals on the campaign and 21 for Carleton. This was evident in the first half, as neither team was able to get on the score sheet or take command of the game.
The second half continued the trend of even play. While both squads had a higher quality of chances, neither was able to capitalize in the end. Laurentian's best chance came in the dying minutes as Brianne Rodrigue got her foot on a ball in close to the keeper. The ball struck the post and appeared to cross the line for a late game winner but ultimately rolled past the net for a no-goal.
Despite the tie, the single point puts the Voyaguers one point ahead of Queen's for sole possession of fourth place in the OUA's East division.
The Voyageurs' next match is a home game against the 8-4-1 Ottawa Gee-Gees on Sunday, October 16th.

Gryphons extend win streak to six with 1-0 win over Brock
ST. CATHARINES, ON - Saturday afternoon in St. Catharines the Gryphons women's soccer team extended their win streak to six with a 1-0 victory over the Brock Badgers. Rookie striker Victoria Hinchliffe scored her team-leading 9th goal of the season to secure the three points. The lone goal of the game came in the 10th minute of play and would prove to be enough as Libby Brenneman picked up her eighth shutout of the season.
With the win, the Gryphons improve to 9-2-3 (wins-losses-draws) on the season and move into a temporary tie with York for first place in the OUA West division standings with 30 points. York, who have a game-in-hand on the Gryphons, will face Brock on Sunday. The Gryphons now have two games remaining in their regular season schedule, both at home, and will next be in action on Thursday, October 20th at 8:15pm when they host the Western Mustangs.

Mustangs collect eighth win of the season over Waterloo
LONDON, Ont. – After a strong 4-2 victory over the Brock Badgers last Sunday, the Mustangs continued their offensive consistency to top the Waterloo Warriors by a score of 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Field. Fifth-year defender Kym Van Duynhoven was responsible for the game-winning goal, finding the back of the net towards the end of the first half.
"It was a tough game. Waterloo came and they had a very good game plan, they're very organized," said Western head coach Martin Painter. "I was really happy with the energy we had from our back-four for the entire game. I thought that was the best part of our team today. They were loud, they were decisive, they were energetic, and I think their quality is what was the difference today."
With the win, the Mustangs maintain their undefeated record and remain in third in the OUA West division with an 8-0-5 record, closing in on Guelph's 8-2-5 second-place standing. The loss will drop the Warriors' record to 0-11-2 to stay in eighth place.
Van Duynhoven's goal was her third of the season, scoring late in the first half to open the Western scoring. Jenna White assisted on the goal to help facilitate the offence. Sonja Cvetkovic's goal also marked her third of the season, and her energy on both ends of the field helped the team to secure the Mustangs victory.
Waterloo came out strong to start the game, playing physically and stopping the Mustangs' initial scoring chances. Despite the strong play from the Warriors, Western would eventually break through the defence for Van Duynhoven to put Western on the scoreboard. Cvetkovic would score her goal just six minutes later to seal the victory for the purple and white.
"She's been fantastic all season and today was another great game," said Painter when addressing Cvetkovic's performance. "She got a well deserved goal. Her presence in the air, her energy, her toughness, and her desire to win the ball is just fantastic and it makes a big difference for us."
"Amy did really well today getting on the ball. She did a lot of runs up front which really helped us in the first half," said Van Duynhoven, praising teammate Amy Lintack. "One of our goals today was to improve our communication, and I think we definitely did better throughout the game."
The Mustangs will be back in action tomorrow, October 16, as they host the Laurier Golden Hawks on Mustangs Field. The game is set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
