MALE: Corey Bellemore (Windsor, Ont.) – 5th yr – Windsor Lancers – Cross Country
Windsor Lancers distance runner Corey Bellemore (Windsor, Ont.) has been named Investors Group OUA Male Athlete of the Week after winning the individual title at the OUA Cross Country Championship on Sunday.
In his fifth and final season with Windsor, Bellemore ran his best 10km race of the year (30:35.8) to become the first Lancer to win the men's individual title since Cristiano Mauricio in 2005.
Thanks in large part to Bellemore’s strong performance, the Lancers men’s team captured an overall silver medal. Following the race, the Windsor, Ont. native was named OUA Men’s Cross Country MVP and a first-team all-star.
Bellemore and the Lancers will now shift their focus to the CIS Cross Country Championships which will be hosted by the University of Laval on November 12.
FEMALE: Krystin Lawrence (Tecumseh, Ont.) – 3rd yr. – Windsor Lancers – Soccer/Hockey
It was a busy weekend for Windsor Lancers dual sport student-athlete Krystin Lawrence (Tecumseh, Ont.) who has been named the Investors Group OUA Female Athlete of the Week.
Lawrence, a third-year criminology major, plays goalkeeper for the Lancers women’s soccer team and forward on the Windsor women’s hockey team.
On the pitch this past week, Lawrence made 14 saves as the Lancers picked up a pair of shoot-out victories against the McMaster Marauders and No. 4 ranked York Lions to advance to this weekend’s OUA Final Four for the first time in program history.
As if that wasn’t enough, on the ice, the Tecumseh, Ont. native also played two regular season games with the women's hockey team. Lawrence scored half of the Lancers goals over the weekend with two on Friday night in a 4-3 OT loss to the Laurier Golden Hawks before adding another in Saturday night’s 3-2 against the Waterloo Warriors.
Things won’t slow down for Lawrence and the Lancers this weekend as the women’s soccer team will play a pair of games at the OUA Final Four, while the women’s hockey team has a two-game road trip to Toronto to take on the Ryerson Rams and University of Toronto Varsity Blues.
