Ravens advance to eighth straight Wilson Cup final
Â
Porter Airlines Player of the Game and 2014 OUA East Player of the Year Philip Scrubb amassed a team-leading 24 points toward the victory, including 11 points from free throws.Â
Â
“We just have to compete every day, and use every game this weekend as opportunity to get better,” Scrubb said. “Tomorrow’s match up will be competitive – every team wants to beat us and every team is capable of doing so. We have to bring more energy and more fire.”
Â
Also in double-digit scoring for the Ravens were Thomas Scrubb (17 points), Kevin Churchill (14 points), Tyson Hinz (11 points) and Victor Raso (11 points). Raso’s tally included a trio of three-pointers, shooting 60% (3 of 5) from outside the arc.
Â
In the losing effort, Enrico Diloreto led the Lancer offence with 17 points, followed by Lien Phillip (12 points), Alex Campbell (11 points), Rotimi Osuntola Jr (10 points) and Khalid Abdel-Gabar (10 points). Osuntola had a team-high 13 rebounds, four on offence and nine defensively.
Â
Windsor struggled with shooting accuracy, averaging 32.8% (22 of 67) from the floor overall, and a lacklustre 26.5% (9 of 34) in the first half.Â
Â
The Ravens have won eight of the last 10 Wilson Cup titles, appearing in 11 of the last 13 championship games.
Â
Both teams played tight in the first quarter, Carleton emerging with a narrow 17-14 advantage. The Ravens began dominating the game early in the second frame, scoring 10 unanswered points in the opening three minutes and taking advantage of an abysmal 18% (3 of 17) second-quarter field goal percentage by the Lancers. A pair of three pointers by Raso late in the quarter helped send Carleton into the halftime break with a 44-28 lead.
Â
Windsor proved unable to chip away at Carleton’s lead in the second half, exiting the third period with a 13-point deficit that was undiminished at the final buzzer.
Â
Carleton will attempt to claim its third straight Wilson Cup banner in the Wilson Cup final at 6 p.m. tomorrow against the winner of tonight’s second semifinal between the Ottawa Gee-Gees and McMaster Marauders. Tip off in the final is tomorrow at 6 p.m. Windsor will play the loser of the second semifinal for the OUA bronze medal at 4 p.m. Both games will be played at the Mattamy Athletic Centre and telecast live on Sportsnet ONE.
