MEN'S BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Laurier's Allin nails clutch free throws to lift his team over Brock, 86-84
Algoma 85 @ Queen’s 90
KINGSTON, Ont. (January 31, 2014) - The Queen's men's basketball team (8-9) took down the Algoma Thunderbirds (4-13) 90-85 tonight at the ARC in OUA men's basketball action.
Â
The Gaels were coming out looking to redeem their road loss against the Thunderbirds only a few weeks ago. The first quarter ended with Algoma leading 21-20. The Gaels were struggling to find a rhythm, committing seven turnovers to Algoma's three.
Â
The second quarter was an exciting one to say the least. Two technical fouls were called against the visitors as things got heated between the Gaels and Thunderbirds.Mackenzie Simpson (Ottawa) knocked down all four of the free-throws awarded to Queen's on the penalties. Although there were a few lapses in communication on the offensive end at the end of the second, the Gaels went into the half leading Algoma 48-37.
Â
The second half of the game was truly a game of runs. The Gaels led by 19 at one point, but the Thunderbirds kept fighting back and narrowing the point margin to within five points in the fourth. Both teams spent a lot of time at the free-throw line and they truly made them count. The Gaels went 28 for 32 from the charity stripe and the Thunderbirds hit 17 of 20.
Â
Patrick Street (Etobicoke, Ont.) was the player of the night hitting loud three-pointers to keep the momentum rolling for Queen's. Laurentian 86 @ York 96
The York University Lions men's basketball team built a big lead and then held on down the stretch to defeat the visiting Laurentian Voyageurs by a score of 96-86 at the Tait McKenzie Centre on Friday night (Jan. 31).
Â
The Lions were firing on all cylinders to start the game and built a huge 32-12 lead after the opening 10 minutes of play. They continued to build on that lead in the second and mid-way through the quarter led 41-19 thanks to a monster put-back jam by Nick Tufegdzich (Tecumseh, Ont.).
Â
The Lions outscored the Voyageurs by five in the frame and held a commanding 53-28 advantage at the half.
Â
However, Laurentian was the squad that came out strong in the second half and began chipping away at the lead. They cut it to 76-56 after three quarters and then went on a furious run in the fourth, cutting the deficit all the way down to seven late in the final quarter. However, the Lions were able to withstand the charge to secure the victory, improving the team's record to 9-8 on the year. The Lions remain in fifth place in the OUA East but pulled to within two points of the fourth-place Voyageurs with the win.
Â
Sophomore forward Daniel Tulloch (Mississauga, Ont.) had another sensational night, putting up a double-double with 34 points and 14 rebounds, both game highs, as well as three assists and four steals. He is now averaging 18.7 points per game since returning to the line-up after an injury, ranking eighth in the OUA, and he's also among the OUA's top 20 in rebounds.
Â
Aaron Rados (Ottawa) also had a strong game with 18 points on 5-of-9 shooting, and he added four rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block.
Â
Laurentian had five players reach double digits in scoring, led by Josh Budd (Timmins, Ont.) with 22. Alex Ratte (Ottawa), who entered the game ranked second in the OUA with more than 25 points per game, was held to just 16 on 7-of-21 shooting.

Ottawa 70 @ Ryerson 63
TORONTO – The No. 5 Ryerson Rams men’s basketball team couldn’t carry a strong start through to the end as they dropped a highly anticipated matchup with the No. 2 Ottawa Gee-Gees, 70-63 on Friday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Â
Ottawa’s Terry Thomas (Dartmouth, N.S.) finished with a game-high 23 points, including all 13 of his team’s first quarter points, while Johnny Berhanemeskel (Ottawa, Ont.) added 20 in the victory.
The Rams came out firing and opened up a 12-3 advantage with 4:30 remaining in the first quarter but ten straight points from Thomas gave Ottawa their first lead at 13-12. Ryerson finished the frame with the final four points to lead 16-13 after ten minutes.
The teams went point for point in the second quarter, trading runs and momentum. The Rams led the entire frame until a Moe Ismail (Hamilton, Ont.) three pointer tied the game at 30-30 but Ryerson’s Jahmal Jones (Mississauga, Ont.) answered with a three ball of his own to give the Rams a 33-30 advantage at the halftime break.
After Aaron Best (Scarborough, Ont.) opened the scoring in the third the Gee-Gees scored seven straight to take a 37-35 lead just two minutes into the frame. Ottawa led by as many as seven in the quarter but after thirty minutes the Gee-Gees held a 56-51 lead.
A Terry Thomas bank shot with 6:40 left in the game gave the Gee-Gees their largest lead of ten points at 65-55. Down the stretch the Rams could not come up with the clutch shot they needed and Ryerson could only cut the deficit to six before ultimately falling 70-63.
“It was a tough night. We didn’t play very well and you can’t play poorly against a quality team like Ottawa. It’s disappointing but...we can put our heads down or we can keep trying to fight. We know what we’re capable of and we just have to try and regroup and get better,” said head coach Roy Rana following the game.
Though it wasn’t the result they wanted in terms of a victory, the Rams can take solace in the play of their defence. Entering Friday’s game the Gee-Gees averaged 93.9 points per game and the Rams held Ottawa to just 70.
“It was a good defensive effort. This is a team that scores 90 to 100 points a game so I thought we did a good job on the defensive end of the floor; we just struggled to score the ball,” added Rana.
Best finished with a team-high 14 points and collected 11 rebounds for the double-double for the Rams while Jahmal Jones added 13 points. Bjorn Michaelsen (Otterburn Park, Que.) made his return to the lineup from injury though he saw limited action with two points and one rebound in just eight minutes played.

McMaster 85 @ Lakehead 74
The men's basketball team couldn't match the early intensity of the McMaster Marauders, dropping an 85-74 decision on Friday evening.
Â
The first quarter was a blur of action up and down the court, as bodies skidded across the hardwood with reckless abandon, and body blows were exchanged under the rim with few stoppages in play.
Â
McMaster's Nathan Pelech and Aaron Redpath were the difference makers early, hitting 2 three's each in the first half, while Lakehead shooters struggled to find their range.
Â
The Thunderwolves came out of the carnage worse for the wear, trailing 25-14 after the first quarter and 47-31 at the half.
Â
The breakneck pace of the first half subsided as the second half began, and the Thunderwolves attempted to chip away at the deficit.
Â
They would narrow it down to 7 points, (69-62) midway through the fourth quarter on a Josh Bell three-point play, but had their hopes dashed on the next McMaster sequence, with Nathan McCarthy knocking down 2 free throws followed by a Joe Rocca 3-ball.
Â
Anthony McIntosh led the 'Pack with 19 points and 8 rebounds. Dwayne Harvey had a double-double outing with 17 points and 12 assists.
Â
Redpath scored 22 points (4-10 from three) to lead the Marauders while Taylor Black pulled down 15 rebounds with 9 points.
Â
Coach Matt Erdman:
Â
"Our slow start cost us tonight. Mac did a great job dictating play early and knocked us back. Every game they've played here with this group they've gotten off to blazing starts. We have to bring it from the get go and give a full 40 minutes tomorrow."

Brock 84 @ Laurier 86
WATERLOO, Ont. (February 1, 2014) - Max Allin of Chatham, Ont., sank two free throws with one second left in the game to lift the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's basketball team past the Brock Badgers 86-84 on Saturday afternoon at the Athletic Complex.
Â
The two late points helped Laurier snap a two-game losing skid and improve their record to 8-10 on the season. The loss dropped the Badgers to league-worst 2-16 mark.
Â
For Allin, the late-game heroics rounded out an afternoon that saw him post his fifth double-double of the season and second in the last three games. He finished the day with a game-high 24 points and 12 rebounds.
Â
His scoring efforts also moved him into eighth all-time in the conference for career scoring with 1,665 points, passing York's Daniel Yves. He currently trails former Badger Brad Rootes by 49 points for seventh on the career-scoring list.
Â
Allin was not the only Hawk to record a double-double on the day as Jamar Forde of Mississauga, Ont., had one of the best games of his career. Forde posted 20 points to go along with a career-best 15 rebounds as he contributed on both ends of the court.
Â
As for the Badgers, Dani Elgadi of Waterloo, Ont., led his team with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

Waterloo 74 @ Western 77
LONDON, Ont. – Greg Morrow poured in 20 points and Eric McDonald hit two big three-pointers—one with time winding down in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime and another late in extra time—to push the Mustangs to a 77-74 overtime victory over the Waterloo Warriors at Alumni Hall on Saturday afternoon.
Â
After the game, Mustangs Head Coach Brad Campbell talked about the importance of McDonald hit the game-tying three with six seconds left in the fourth.
Â
"Although some of the game was luck—especially with Eric McDonald hitting two crucial threes—we had to get Waterloo into overtime to take the game," Campbell said.
Â
The Mustangs dealt with a 2-3 zone for the majority of the first quarter but managed to expose the inside, scoring 12 points from the floor in the quarter. Western continued to drive inside, causing the Warriors to go into penalty late in the second quarter. But after 10 lead changes in the half the score going into the third quarter was 31-33 for Waterloo.
Â
In the third, Waterloo put together their biggest lead of the game at 7:24 with a score of 41-35 but that lead wouldn't last, as the latter half of the fourth ended up being when the most crucial moments in the game took place.
Â
With 21 seconds left in the final quarter, it was a one possession game with Western down 62-61 when Greg Morrow drove the ball in the paint and scored what was thought to be a basket and a foul. Unfortunately for Western, however, the foul was a charge, giving possession to Waterloo.
Â
After that bad break, a foul was given by McDonald to put Waterloo guard Mike Helsby at the line where he would score two more points to put the Mustangs down by three with possession of the ball and 19 seconds left on the clock. At the six second mark, Mcdonald hit a three-pointer to tie the game, meaning another five minutes would be needed to decide the game.
Â
Once again going back and forth, the two teams made sure the last minute of overtime would be eventful, starting with McDonald hitting another important three to put the Mustangs up 75-74 with eight seconds left. At the five second mark, Peter Scholtes was fouled and made both shots to put Western up by three with five seconds left.
Â
Waterloo Guard Jaspreet Gill would attempt a three to tie the game with the seconds clicking down but was unable to cash in, leaving the score at 77-74 for the Mustangs.
Â
Western will have a bit of time to recover from the exciting victory before they travel to Windsor to take on the Lancers at the St. Denis Centre on Wednesday, February 5. That game is set to start at 8:00 p.m.

Windsor 76 @ Guelph 62
Guelph, Ont. (February 1, 2014) - The Guelph Gryphon's men's basketball team were defeated by the CIS No. 7 Windsor Lancers 76-62 on Saturday afternoon at the W.F. Mitchell Centre. The loss drops the Gryphon's record to 5-13 on the season while the Lancers improve to 13-5.
Â
Adam Kemp led all Gryphon scorers with 14 points and six rebounds. Taylor Boers also chipped in with 13 points. Andrew Grant and Daniel Dooley added 12 and 10 points respectively.
Â
Windsor's Evan Matthews led the all scorers with 22 points and six rebounds.
Â
The game turned into a defensive battle in the first few minutes of the opening quarter, as stingy play from both teams limited offense. After Windsor took a 6-3 lead, Guelph's Daniel Dooley hit a three-pointer to tie things up. Guelph's energy on the court was eventually rewarded as they took a 15-8 lead after a long Taylor Boers three. Guelph continued their aggressive play in the quarter, particularly on the defensive side of the ball, as the Gryphon's tenacious play made it difficult for Windsor to get into an offensive rhythm, making them commit seven turnovers in he quarter. Andrew Grant (Toronto) led the way for Guelph in the first with a game high nine points in the quarter. Guelph went into the second quarter leading the Lancers 21-16.
Â
Three straight baskets from the Lancer's to open the second quarter gave Windsor the lead, 22-21, forcing Guelph to take an early timeout. The two teams exchanged baskets, allowing Guelph to tie things up at 25 with 6:55 left in the half. The fast-paced play continued throughout much of the second quarter with both teams taking turns with the lead. Soon after Windsor would start to dictate play. With 1:08 to go in the half, Windsor led 34-30. A three-pointer from Windsor's Josh Collins just before the clock expired extended the Lancer lead to 39-32 heading into the halftime break.
Â
Andrew Grant provided the Gryphon's with a spark on offense early in the third. Grant scored a beautiful lay in on the Gryphon's opening possession and then fed Adam Kemp a beautiful pass that led to Kemp being fouled by a Lancer player. Kemp made his subsequent free throws, cutting into the Lancer lead, making it 41-37 Windsor. Five straight points from the Lancer's, courtesy of Josh Collins' jump shooting, gave Windsor a nine point cushion, 46-37, with 4:59 left in the third. Guelph's Taylor Boers then added five straight for the Gryphon's, including a long three, to cut into the Lancer's lead. Windsor started to pull away after that, using an aggressive defensive system to pressure the Gryphon's into committing nine turnovers in the quarter. Windsor led the Gryphon's 57-46 heading into the final quarter.
Â
Down nine, Guelph needed a strong performance in the final frame if they had any hope of upsetting the Lancer's. Play opened with both teams exchanging five points on the scoreboard. After this though Windsor started to run away with things, eventually going up 70-55. An and-one play from Guelph's Adam Kemp hoped to get the Gryphon's back into the contest, but the deficit was just too large.
Â
Guelph tips off again at home on February 5th against the Waterloo Warriors.

Laurentian 69 @ Queen’s 72
KINGSTON, Ont. (February 1, 2014) - The Queen's men's basketball team (9-9) beat the Laurentian Voyageurs (10-9) 72-69 in a thrilling last second victory on Saturday night at the ARC in Kingston.
Â
To say the last few minutes of this Laurentian-Queen's match-up was exciting would be an understatement. It was a game of mixed emotions and sporadic scoring but it truly brought the fans at the Athletic and Recreation Centre to their feet. To sum it all up in one play: Roshane Roberts (Vaughan, Ont.) hit a game winning three-pointer to give the Gaels the lead and the final score of 72-69.
Â
Queen's led 23-12 at the end of the first quarter with Nikola Misljencevic (Ottawa), Sukhpreet Singh (Toronto) and Mackenzie Simpson (Ottawa) each connecting from behind the arc. The visiting Voyageurs turned on their offense in a big way in the second quarter by going on a 19-0 run, keeping the Gaels scoreless for the first five minutes of play. The Gaels were able to climb back a bit from the loud shift in momentum by the end of the second where the score stood at 36-32 for Laurentian. Laurentian's main scorer Alex Ratte was struggling on the offensive end, but Josh Budd and Tychon Carter-Newman made up for it with their sharp shooting.
Â
In third quarter, the Gaels finally started connecting on the offensive end. A lot of that was due to Patrick Street (Etobicoke, Ont.) going 3-for-3 from long range and Misljencevic continuing his persistent aggressive play. At the end of the third, the Gaels trailed 53-51.
Â
The fourth quarter had the gymnasium holding their breath as both teams exchanged long-range jumpers, free throw attempts and big boards to give their teams extra possessions. Singh had two big threes while imperative boards by Street gave the Gaels extra possessions and points they needed to grab the win. With 1.4 seconds left on the clock, Roberts launched a quick three to put his squad up by 72-69. The Voyageurs could not respond and Queen's took the win.
Â
Josh Budd of Laurentian led all scorers with 24 points, followed by his teammate Tychin Carter-Newman who contributed 20. Queen's had a well rounded contribution with Roberts, Singh and Street scoring 14 points apiece.
Â
The game also marked the annual Marco W. Alessio Memorial game which is named in memory of Marco William Alessio, a former Gaels basketball player from 1987 to 1989. Mark became a teacher following his time at Queen's and he travelled the world, teaching in locations such as Hong Kong, Mexico, Spain and Madagascar. It was in Madagascar that Mark lost his life on February 23, 2009 at the age of 43 during a time of political upheaval in the African nation.
Â
To honour Mark and to recognize how important Queen's and the basketball team were to him, a scholarship was established during the 2009-10 season in his memory. The recipient for 2013-14 is Nikola Misljencevic.

Algoma 59 @ York 83
The York University Lions men's basketball team won convincingly on home court Saturday (Feb. 1), downing the Algoma Thunderbirds, 83-59 at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
Â
The win is the tenth of the season for York, whom now move to 10-8 on the year, placing them in a tie with Laurentian for fourth place in the OUA East.
Â
For the Lions, Nick Tufegdzich (Tecumseh, Ont.) and Daniel Tulloch (Mississauga, Ont.) were impressive, with Tufegdich finishing with 20 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, two steals, and two blocked shots; while Tulloch ended with 19 points, three rebounds, and an assist.
Â
The game would be preceded by a special ceremony, as York's only graduating player, standout fourth year forward Aaron Rados (Ottawa, Ont.), was honoured for his many years of commitment to the York Lions family. And riding the energy from the presentation, Tulloch opened the scoring for the Lions with a nice three point shot to put them on the board.
Â
The perimeter shooting approach was generating a lot of early success for York as Rados drained his first basket of the game from beyond the arc. Tufegdzich was equally instrumental at the other end of the court as well, effectively shutting down the passing lanes in the paint. The combined effort had the Lions ahead, 18-10, after the first quarter.
Â
First year guard Phillip Cunningham-Gillen (Hamilton, Ont.) would drain another Lions three pointer to open the second, as York continued to exploit Algoma's perimeter defense. Frustrated by the Lions pressure, the Thunderbirds attempted to coax them into a more physical contest and the fouls started to add up on both sides.
Â
The change in approach created a couple lanes in Algoma's zone and Tufegdzich would find space to throw down an aggressive two-handed dunk to spark the crowd. Continuing to move the ball well offensively throughout, the Lions were in control, 43-31 at halftime.
Â
Returning in the second half, York continued to launch assaults from beyond the arc, as Rados drained another three point shot to push the Lions ahead, 52-34. The team was clicking and seeing the court well, which was highlighted by exceptional ball movement that put the Lions in great position. York retained a 67-49 advantage at the end of the third quarter.
Â
With victory on the horizon, the Lions cruised in the final frame. Rados would leave the game to a standing ovation, finishing with 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and a steal on the night. And as the final buzzer sounded, York left with the 83-59 decision.
Â
The Lions return to the court Friday (Feb. 7) to face off against the Carleton Ravens at the Tait McKenzie Centre at 8pm.

Carleton 71 @ Ryerson 68
TORONTO -- For the majority of 33 minutes, the No. 5 Ryerson Rams were leading the No. 1 Carleton Ravens, and it was an upset in the making
But then it was the Ravens who showed why they are now 18-0 on the season, making shot after shot and avoiding the upset by pulling off a 71-68 victory over Ryerson at Coca-Cola Court.
In front of an energetic and loud crowd, Ryerson got out to an early lead in the first quarter, silencing the Carleton offence and leading 13-9 after 10 minutes.
It was Carleton’s lowest scoring start in 2013-14.
“We pride ourself on defence every night,” Roy Rana, head coach of the Rams said post-game. “Tonight, we came out and were really focused; we executed the game plan pretty well throughout the whole game so it was a great defensive effort against a great team.”
Carleton would battle back in the second quarter, going on a 9-0 run in a span of two minutes. Ryerson wouldn’t back down as first-year guard, Adika Peter-McNeilly (Scarborough, Ont.) would nail a three-pointer to put the Rams back within one. He would add a free-throw before the end of the half and Ryerson led 28-27 at recess.
It was the first time all season that Carleton trailed at the half.
The third quarter featured back and forth play from each team, with Adam Voll (Kitchener, Ont.) stepping up big down low defensively for Ryerson in relief of Kadeem Green who was forced to the bench with four fouls.
“For a freshman, you’ve got to be encouraged about his level of compete he didn’t back down, played really aggressive, really hard, bodes well for the future for him and for our program,” Rana said.
CIS back-to-back most valuable player the last two seasons, Philip Scrubb also heated up in the third quarter. Scrubb and Peter-McNeilly went back and forth all quarter long and put on a treat for the fans. Scrubb finished with a team-high 22 points.
After Ryerson took a 51-44 lead entering into the fourth frame, the momentum started to shift in the direction of the defending CIS champion from the last three seasons. Eventually Carleton tied the game at 6:40 of the quarter after Scrubb nailed a shot from beyond the arc to make it 57-57.
The Ravens used four free-throws to take 70-65 lead with 20 seconds remaining. Then with 17.4 seconds left Peter-McNeilly hit a three-pointer to put the Rams within two.
He described the shot as something that he dreamed about.
“I had a vision that was going in before I even shot it, so like I knew it was going in,” Peter-McNeilly said. “(It was) something unique.”
A Rams foul would seal the deal as Carleton nailed both free throws to finish the night shooting 82.6 per cent from the line.
Rana was impressed with Peter-McNeilly’s play against the nation’s best. The 6'3" guard finished with a game-high 26 points.
“When he went down with injury, that really hurt us. Kind of the first day that he’s been back that he’s been feeling 100 per cent and he’s just a huge piece of our team, he’s just so calm, so cool under pressure, he’s just a great player, we’re really happy he’s with us.”
The loss drops Ryerson to 13-5 on the season, and with the push for the playoffs now in full-swing, it is crunch time for the Rams.
“We’ve got to take it every game, one at a time and hopefully just collect as many wins as we can before the next phase of our season,” Rana said.
Ryerson travels to Algoma to face the Thunderbirds next Friday, Feb. 7 and then Laurentian on Saturday. Peter-McNeilly says that this game was a momentum booster for the team.
“It’s good because we go on the road next weekend and it’s just good we’re going to have that vengence that, hey, we want to win that next game going into playoffs. We want to win that game because it’s necessary.”

McMaster 101 @ Lakehead 64
What began with hope ended in despair for the men's basketball team, as they were beaten 101-64 by the McMaster Marauders Saturday evening.
Â
Things got off to a more manageable start for the 'Wolves, as they dictated the pace of the game early on, leading 14-11 late in the first quarter.
Â
Some undisciplined play in the final minute led to a bevy of Marauder free throws, who would tie the game at 20 as the first quarter ended.
Â
As the second quarter came to pass, the McMaster team punished the T-Wolves from distance, hitting three ball after three ball, and tallying 29 points in the quarter to lead by 16 at the half, 49-33.
Â
While the 3rd quarter saw the visitors extend their lead incrementally, the 4th quarter was an all-out assault, out-scoring Lakehead 32-14 in front of a non-plussed Thunderdome crowd.
Â
Lakehead's top performer was Joseph Nitychoruk with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Igor Lebov finished with 15 points.
Â
Joseph Rocca scored a game-high 23 points on 8-of-10 shooting.
Â
McMaster went 11-of-23 from behind the arc to Lakehead's 1-of-8.
Â
Coach Matt Erdman:
Â
"We started off well but we ended the second quarter with way too many turnovers and you can't afford to turn the ball over 29 times against a team like McMaster. At the end of the day, we still have a number of goals to accomplish and it starts Monday at practice."
Â
The men's team is on the road next weekend for two games against Laurier.
