OUA announces 2014 men's basketball West division all-stars
Â
The first all-star team is made up of two players each from the Windsor Lancers and McMaster Marauders, plus a high-scoring guard from the Laurier Golden Hawks.
Windsor’s Lien Phillip is in familiar territory. The fifth-year player out of St. Mark’s, Grenada has been named to the OUA West first team for the third year in a row. Phillip posted 12.7 boards per game to lead the OUA, and chipped in 16.1 points to average a double-double on the season. Phillip has been a model of consistency throughout his career, and that was confirmed this season when the six-foot-seven forward posted a double-double performance in 16 of 22 games.
Â
McMaster big man Taylor Black has earned his second consecutive first team nod. The Stoney Creek, Ont. native put up 13.9 points and 7.9 rebounds per game while dominating in the post for the first-place Marauders. The six-foot-seven centre added nearly one block and 1.2 steals per game and collected five double-doubles on the year for McMaster, who boasts the top offence and defence in the OUA West.
Â
Max Allin of the Laurier Golden Hawks led his team to a third-place finish in the OUA West this year and paced the squad in scoring. His 19.2 points per game was sixth in the OUA and second in the West. The Chatham, Ont. native led the league in three-pointers made with 73, 11 better than second place. Showing he is more than a scorer, the six-foot-four guard also finished sixth in the OUA in rebounds, pulling in 7.8 per game. Allin wraps up his career with a total of 1,745 points, placing him fifth in OUA career scoring. The first team nod is the second in a row for Allin, after garnering second team honours in 2011 and 2012.
Â
Enrico Diloreto of the Windsor Lancers earns his 2013-14 first team selection by leading the Lancers in scoring and finishing in the top ten in the OUA. The fifth-year guard averaged a career-high 18.1 points per game for the Lancers, en route to a second place finish in the division. Diloreto (London, Ont.) made 37 three-pointers on the year and added 2.2 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game for the Lancers. Diloreto’s recognition on the first team comes in his final year, and marks his only appearance on the number one squad after being named to the second team last season.
Â
McMaster’s Joe Rocca is another fresh face on the first team. The guard out of Sarnia, Ont. led the Marauders with 14.2 points per game and added 4.2 rebounds per game from his backcourt position. Rocca shot a consistent 50.7 percent from the field, including 36-for-87 on three-pointers. In his third year, Rocca helped McMaster to a sparkling 18-4 record and first place in the West division. Rocca was named to the OUA West second team in his sophomore campaign a year ago.
Â
Five schools are represented on the West division second team. It is a mostly veteran group, but also features one of the top rookies in the OUA.
Â
Greg Morrow was the leader of the Western Mustangs squad that went from the bottom of the West a year ago to a first round playoff win in 2014. The London, Ont., native paced the Mustangs in both scoring and rebounding, with 16.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. The third-year guard also chipped in 2.9 assists for Western.
Â
In a season that didn’t go as expected for the Brock Badgers, rookie forward Dani Elgadi was a shining star, becoming a second team all-star in his debut campaign. The six-foot-seven forward from Waterloo, Ont., was one of only three players in the OUA to average a double-double for the season. His 19.5 points per game was tops in the West division, while his 10.4 rebounds tied him for second in the OUA.
Â
Josh Collins was the engine that kept the Windsor offensive machine running. The fifth-year guard led the OUA with 5.8 assists per game, while also adding a career-high 12.1 points. The Thornhill, Ont., native is a second team all-star for the third time in his career.
Â
Lakehead’s fourth-year guard Dwayne Harvey receives the first all-star nod of his career with a second team honour this season. A native of Hamilton, Ont., Harvey collected 12.8 points per game on 46.6 percent shooting and added 4.8 rebounds. Harvey also led the Thunderwolves by dishing out 4.0 assists per game.
Â
Zachary Angus of the Guelph Gryphons rounds out the OUA West second team. The fourth-guard out of Burlington, Ont. did it all this season for the Gryphons. He led the team in points (12.5 PPG), rebounds (4.6 RPG), assists (3.0 APG) and steals (1.6 SPG). Angus was a leader on a Gryphons team that returned to the playoffs this season after a one year absence.
Â
The 2013-14 OUA West all-rookie team features five talented young players who provided their teams with important contributions in their first season.
Â
Brock’s Dani Elgadi headlines the list of top first-year players that also includes Myles Charvis of the Waterloo Warriors, Henry Tan of the Lakehead Thunderwolves, Laurier’s Jack Simmons and Taylor Boers of the Guelph Gryphons.
