Ravens athletes honoured in year-end bash
More than three hundred student athletes packed the hall for the season ending ceremony to single out another great season of individual and team success.
2013-14 Ruth Coe Memorial Award (Female Athlete of the Year)
Elizabeth Roach-women’s basketball
Roach (Ottawa, ON) capped off her five year Carleton career with her first ever postseason accolade when she was named the 2013-14 OUA East division player of the year.
The five-foot-eight guard finished second in the East in scoring with 14.7 points per game. Her season total of 109 assists was tops in the East and was 39 better than the closest competitor.
Demonstrating her well-rounded game, Roach also added 135 rebounds, and finished sixth in the OUA with 49 steals. The Political Science major was also named an OUA East first team all-star. Roach
also posted 5.0 assists per game to ranked #5th in CIS) and was a named a 2nd Team All Canadian.
Male Athlete of the Year
Philip Scrubb-men’s basketball
This season, the 6-foot-3 guard was once again the most consistent player on the top-ranked team in the country. The Richmond, B.C. native led the Ravens in points (18.6) and assists (4.9) per game and ranked in the top 10 nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.7 per game– third), three-point shooting (47.0% – fifth), free-throw percentage (87.4 – eighth), assists, as well as points per 40 minutes (27.0 – seventh).
Scrubb led Carleton to a perfect 22-0 in conference action for the third time in four years.
Phil won his fourth CIS Championship this year, was named the CIS Player of the Year for the third straight season and was a 1st team All Canadian. Scrubb was also named the OUA East player of the year for the third year in a row.
He was the only active CIS player invited to Canada’s senior national team camp last summer and was a member of the national team for the 2013 Summer Universiade.

The fifth year defender from Toronto, Ontario was named to the OUA East first all-star team for the third consecutive season.

Tyson Hinz-men’s basketball
Tyson Hinz (Ottawa, ON) is a perennial OUA East all-star. A former CIS player of the year, Hinz became a first-teamer for the fourth time this year. The fifth-year forward is a force on both ends of the floor, contributing 14.6 points and 5.9 rebounds per game for the top-ranked Ravens. Hinz averaged 25 minutes a game this season for Carleton, a team that averaged 94.2 points per game despite having only two players in the top 20 in OUA scoring.
Hinz wrapped up his regular season career as one of the most decorated basketball players in Ontario University Athletics history. The Commerce major is a four-time OUA first team all-star, three-time CIS first team all-Canadian, former OUA all-rookie team member, three-time OUA champion, four-time CIS champion and has been named the Most Valuable Player at the National Championship twice.
Pat O’Brien Award for Ravens’ Coach of the Year
Marty Johnston- men’s hockey
In 2013-2014, Johnston led the Ravens to an OUA regular season championship courtesy of their 22-5-1 record and 45 points. Carleton then went on to win the OUA’s bronze medal and qualify for the program’s first ever CIS University Cup. The Ravens enjoyed a 16 game winning streak that started in the regular season and stretched into the second round of the playoffs. Carleton held a 13-1 home record in their 14 regular season matches at the Ice House. The Ravens lost only once in 5 home ice playoff appearances.
