OUA M-BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: RAVENS SWEEP HOME DOUBLEHEADER TO STAY UNDEFEATED
The two teams battled in the second quarter shot for shot but Carleton would take a 42-36 lead going into the halftime break with a big contribution from Willy Manigat (Montreal) and veteran point guard Michael Kenny (Ottawa) who scored nine and 13 points respectively in the first half.
Going into the second half, the Lancers were able to keep up with the Ravens for the first few minutes of the game. But the Ravens realized their advantage in the post and would not look back as they dominated in the paint in scoring and rebounding for the rest of the game. The Ravens inside game would give them a 73-49 advantage after the third that the Lancers could not catch up to.
The Ravens were led by Tyson Hinz (Ottawa) with an overall 18 points and six rebounds. The Lancers were led by fourth year guard Isaac Kuon (Mississauga, Ont.) with 15 points.
OTTAWA 87, WESTERN 76
At Ottawa, the Gee-Gees put their sliding streak to an end on Friday, defeating the Western Mustangs 87-76 at Montepetit Hall.
The Gee-Gees took an early lead, entering the second quarter up by seven with a score of 25-18. It didn't get much better for the Mustangs in the second frame, as Ottawa ran rampant over the Western defence and finished the first half of play at 49-36.
Western outscored the Gee-Gees in the third frame 20-16, but it was too little, too late as the Gee-Gees solidified their win with 22 points in the fourth over Western's 20.
Marcus Barnett (Hampton, Va.) led the way for the Mustangs, netting 24 points and seven total rebounds, while Andrew Wedemire (Sarnia, Ont.) made seven defensive rebounds and scored 17 points.
Ottawa's Warren Ward (Brampton, Ont.) had an impressive game. The second year guard hit the hardwood for 36 minutes and led all scorers with 30 points. Teammate Josh Gibson-Bascombe (Toronto) added to the Gee-Gees win with 21 points, while Louis Gauthier (Ottawa) had a game-high 13 rebounds, including eight offensively.
TORONTO 77, MCMASTER 67
At McMaster, the No. 8 Toronto Varsity Blues upset the No. 4 Marauders 77-67 at Burridge Gymnasium on Friday.
Led by fifth-year forward Pat Sewell's (London, Ont.) 21 points and six rebounds, Toronto had four players in double figures and as a team shot over 50 percent from the floor, was 8-of-13 from beyond the arc, and nailed 71 percent of their free throws.
McMaster jumped out to an early three point lead and led 21-18 after the first quarter of play. The Blues defence took over and stymied the Marauders offence, holding them to under 18 points over the next three quarters.
Drazen Glisic (Sarajevo) added 16 points and hauled in a team-high seven rebounds, while Nick Magalas (Burlington, Ont.) knocked down 14, had four rebounds, five assists and four steals, as the Blues outscored the Marauders in the final three frames to close out the 10-point victory.
McMaster's Keenan Jappesen (Stoney Creek, Ont.) led all players with 23 points and 11 rebounds. He also had three assists, four steals and one blocked shot.
LAKEHEAD 78, RYERSON 62
At Lakehead, a stellar second half effort erased a 10-point deficit as the Thunderwolves won 78-62 over the visiting Ryerson Rams on Friday at the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse in Thunder Bay.
Point guard Greg Carter (Ottawa) was outstanding in scoring 17 points with eight assists, six rebounds and five steals. More importantly, the sophomore held Rams guard Josh Budd (Timmins, Ont.) to four points with seven turnovers.
Lakehead also received great defensive play from Matt Nagy (Bentonville, Ark.) and Andrew Hackner (Thunder Bay, Ont.) who shut down OUA leading scorer Boris Backovic (Toronto). After Bakovic opened the game with 12 first quarter points, the Wolves duo limited him to six the rest of the way. Nagy was strong offensively as well with 13 points.
Inside, Yoosrie Salhia (Toronto) had 10 points and 11 rebounds and freshman Ryan Thomson (Oakville, Ont.) had 10 points, six boards and three assists. In the backcourt, Joseph Jones (Washington, D.C.) scored 14 points with four rebounds off the bench.
Ryan McNeilly (Toronto) and Joe Imbrogno (Toronto) played well for the Rams in notching 13 points each to compliment Bakovic's 18.
LAURIER 89, RMC 66
At Wilfrid Laurier, the Golden Hawks played their third game of the season at home against the RMC Paladins. With the score 89-66, the Hawks take their first win of the season making their record 1-2.
Entering the second quarter, the Hawks had a four point lead over their opponents with the score at 19-15. Laurier maintained a modest lead for the rest of the half. The score at half was 42-32 for the purple and gold.
At the beginning of the third quarter the game's tempo quickened. For Laurier, the third quarter proved to be all about the foul shots. Of their 27 points scored in this quarter, 13 of them were thanks to successful free throws. Meanwhile, the Paladins' Simon Dakin (Comox, B.C.) played a strong role this quarter hitting a number of shots and increasing RMC's score by 12 points.
For the majority of the final quarter Laurier clearly dominated the play. They increased their lead to a 23 point gap over the Paladins, and won the game 89-66.
Jesse MacDonald (Brantford, Ont.), Kale Harrison (Stratford, Ont.), and Travis Berry (St. Catherines, Ont.) were the high scorers for Laurier with 21, 20 and 17 points respectively. Matthew Buckley (Waterloo, Ont.) and Maxwell Allin (Chatham, Ont.) contributed with seven rebounds each.
For RMC, high-scorers were Simon and Gavin Viray-Cox (Georgetown, Ont.) who had 16 points each.
WATERLOO 66, QUEEN'S 62
At Waterloo, despite the superb shooting of Dan Bannister (Newmarket, Ont.), the Queen's Gaels lost yet another close game 66-62 to the Warriors on Friday evening.
Bannister shot 100 percent from the field, including three 3-pointers for a total of 11 points at the end of the night.
The Warriors came out strong against the Gaels in the first quarter, but Queen's gained momentum going into the second quarter, and was able to finish the half with a four point lead.
The Gaels' lead remained at the end of the third, but the Warriors were able to make a comeback in the fourth quarter to take a four point lead at the end of the game.
The Gaels outscored the Warriors from the field in the game, however Waterloo went to the line a total of 20 times, making 15, opposed to the Gaels who went 7-of-11.
Mitch Leger (Kingston, Ont.) had another strong night, recording his third double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Baris Ondul (Istanbul) was the third Gaels player to put up double digits with 10 points and three assists.
Waterloo's Cam McIntyre (Kitchener, Ont.) led the Warriors in scoring with 21 points, while Ben Frisby (Vancouver) led the defence with seven defensive rebounds.
LAURENTIAN 96, BROCK 89
At Laurentian, the Brock Badgers dropped a 96-89 decision to the Voyageurs on the road on Friday. The Badgers were without 2008-09 CIS rookie of the year Didi Mukendi (St. Catharines, Ont.).
Laurentian had three players in double figures led by the brother tandem of Isiah and Manny Pasquale (Victoria) who combined for 44 points including going 9-of-13 (69.2 percent) from beyond the arc. Matas Tirillis (Mississauga, Ont.) registered a double-double adding 24 points and 11 rebounds.
Leading the Badgers was freshman Clinton Springer-Williams (London, Ont.) who recorded a game high 32 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Sophomore Joel Whitty (St. Catharines, Ont.) contributed with 20 points including five three-pointers while collecting five assists.
Laurentian shot 49.3 percent (33-of-67) from the field which included shooting 50.0 percent (12-of-24) from beyond the arc. The Voyageurs had a chance to put the Badgers away early but struggled from the charity stripe down the stretch going just 18-of-38 (47.4 percent).
Brock shot 42.4 percent (28-of-66) from the field while going 10-of-25 (40.0 percent) from three-point land. They were also 23-of-28 (82.1 percent) from the charity stripe.
GUELPH 96, YORK 85
At York, the Guelph Gryphons earned their first win of the season over the York Lions 96-85 on Friday at Tait McKenzie Centre.
The Gryphons outscored the Lions in three of the four quarters, but the Lions weren't able to come back after falling behind 51-39 in the first half.
York's David Tyndale (Mississauga, Ont.) scored an incredible 34 points during his 38 minutes on the hardwood.
Guelph's Jay Mott (Burlington, Ont.) and Jonathan Moscatelli (Toronto) both had stellar games, scoring 27 and 26 points respectively. Moscatelli was perfect on free throws, draining all six of his shots, while Mott made a team-high eight defensive rebounds.
QUEEN'S 64, LAURIER 63
At Laurier, Mitch Leger (Kingston, Ont.) had 21 points and six rebounds to lead the Gaels to their first regular season victory with a 64-63 win over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday.
Baris Ondul (Istanbul) tied the game up with one of his signature three-pointers in the second quarter, and the Gaels finished the first half with a one point lead of 34-33.
The second half of the game was full of suspense as the score continued to go back and forth with the game tied 63-63 with less than a minute left on the clock. Queen's forward Bernard Burgesson (Port Hawkesbury, N.S.), had two foul shots with 13.6 seconds left in the game. He missed the first foul shot, but the second made foul shot was all the Gaels needed to take the 64-63 win.
Leger had 21 points, six rebounds and four steals in the game, but he was by no means working alone. Ondul contributed 11 points, which included three three-pointers. Rookie guard James Asefa (Toronto), led the team in assists with three, while Burgesson worked well in the low post collecting five rebounds.
Laurier's Jesse MacDonald (Brantford, Ont.) topped the Golden Hawks' scoring with 16 points, while Travis Berry (St. Catharines, Ont.) netted 13 for himself.
WINDSOR 80, OTTAWA 77
At Ottawa, the Windsor Lancers earned a hard fought 80-77 overtime victory over the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday night.
The Lancers got off to a good start against the Gee-Gees, as they held an 18-14 lead after one quarter of play. Neither team was able to break free of the other in the first half as Windsor added slightly to their lead and were ahead 36-31 at the break.
Despite holding a seven point advantage after three quarters of play, the Gee-Gees were able to battle back in the fourth quarter and tie the game, forcing it into overtime.
In extra time, the Lancers got some clutch baskets to claim a tough 80-77 victory on the road against Ottawa.
In the victory, Isaac Kuon (Mississauga, Ont.) led the way with 23 points while Nigel Johnson-Tygther (Brampton, Ont.) added 17 points and seven rebounds. Rookie guard Enrico Diloreto (London, Ont.) also had an impressive performance as he finished with 14 points and six rebounds in the victory.
Ottawa's Donnie Gibson (Odessa, Ont.) contributed 18 points while Josh Gibson-Bascombe (Toronto) led all scorers for both teams with 25 points and six defensive rebounds.
Windsor shot 53 percent from the field in the game, including 44 percent from three point range. Ottawa was held to 37 percent percentage shooting.
MCMASTER 72, RYERSON 60
At McMaster, the Marauders added another win to their 2009 record as the defeated the Ryerson Rams 72-60 on Saturday at Burridge Gymnasium.
The Rams fell behind from the beginning and weren't able to come up big for the win. After the first half, the Marauders led 39-25.
The third frame didn't get any better for the struggling Rams, as they were held to just nine points all quarter long. A 26-point effort in the fourth didn't help as much as Ryerson would have liked and McMaster finished them off.
Ryerson's Josh Budd (Timmins, Ont.) was held to just 15 points, while McMaster's Keenan Jeppesen (Stoney Creek, Ont.) had a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds.
LAKEHEAD 68, TORONTO 67
At Lakehead, for a second straight night, Scott Morrison's Lakehead men's basketball team eked out a fourth quarter comeback as they beat the Toronto Varsity Blues 68-67 at the C. J. Sanders Fieldhouse on Saturday.
Down 31-28 at the half and 52-45 entering the fourth quarter, the Wolves clamped down on defence in the final stretches to remain undefeated in the OUA regular season.
Sophomore post Yoosrie Salhia (Toronto) led the Pack with 17 points and nine rebounds with freshman forward Ryan Thomson (Oakville, Ont.) contributing 12 points and seven boards to lead the bench unit. Point guard Greg Carter (Ottawa) continued his excellent play with 11 points, three rebounds, three assists and three assists on the night.
Toronto's Patrick Sewell (London, Ont.) led his squad with 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Nicholas Magalas (Burlington, Ont.) added 14 points and six assists while Rob Paris (St. Catharines, Ont.) had 14 points of his own.
WATERLOO 90, RMC 43
At Waterloo, the Warriors improved to a 3-1 record with their 90-43 domination over the Royal Military College Paladins on Saturday.
The Paladins, who have yet to win a game this season, trailed the Warriors from beginning to end. The first quarter was just a sign of things to come for RMC, as they were held to just seven points. Things didn't improve much in the second frame, as the Warriors added another 24 points to their 23-point first quarter. The Paladins trailed 47-22 at the end of the first half.
After another dismal half, Waterloo solidified the win with a 25-point fourth quarter.
RMC's Nicolas Cooke made a strong effort for the Paladins and led all scoring with 19 points.
Waterloo's scoring was spread amongst five double-digit scorers, including Ben Frisby (Vancouver) and Jesse Tipping (Orangeville, Ont.) for 10 points apiece, Alan Goodhoofd (Oakville, Ont.) and Luke Kieswetter (Waterloo, Ont.) for 15 each and Cam McIntyre (Kitchener, Ont.) with 11 points.
LAURENTIAN 82, GUELPH 80
At Laurentian, the Voyageurs second win of the season came down to a dying-seconds contest as they overcame the Guelph Gryphons 82-80 on Saturday at Ben Avery Gym in Sudbury, Ont.
Guelph scored 26 points to Laurentian's 20 in the first frame and came out of the first half leading 41-39, but it wasn't until the fourth quarter, when Laurentian would outscore Guelph 22-14, that the Voyageurs would make their comeback to win the game.
Guelph's Jay Mott (Burlington, Ont.) gave the Gryphons 20 points to add to their effort, while Dan McCarthy (Guelph, Ont.) and Jonathan Moscatelli (Toronto) contributed 16 and 18, respectively.
It was Laurentian's Isiah Pasquale (Victoria) that helped lift the Voyageurs to the win with 21 points. Teammates Justin Serresse (Rouen, France) added 17 while Matas Tirilis (Mississauga, Ont.) netted 14.
YORK 78, BROCK 62
At York, the Lions defeated the Brock Badgers 78-62 on Saturday night.
The Lions powered through the opening quarter, building a 16-4 lead in the first five minutes of play, which would result in a 26-14 lead going into the second quarter. The Badgers were not given a chance to recover as the Lions once again outscored them in the second frame and surged ahead 40-26 at the end of the half.
The second half saw the Lions working to maintain their advantage as the Badgers upped their game. Despite outscoring the Badgers by a mere two points, the lead they had built in the first half clinched the 78-62 win for the Lions.
York rookie Dejan Kravic (London, Ont.) particularly stood out on the court as he posted 23 points and pulled down 10 rebounds and for a double-double. Vadim Razenberg (Richmond Hill, Ont.) shot 62 percent from the field en route to an 11-point performance, while David Tyndale (Mississauga, Ont.) sank seven of his eight free throws and finished with 12 points.
Lions newcomers Ostap Choliy (Oakville, Ont.) and Justin Bell (Mississauga, Ont.) also had big games with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Brock's Clinton Springer-Williams (London, Ont.) threw up 10 field goals and finished the game with 28 points total, as well as five defensive rebounds.
CARLETON 80, WESTERN 72
At Carleton, the Ravens ended the weekend on a positive note, defeating the Western Mustangs 80-72 at the Ravens' Nest Sunday afternoon to keep their perfect record intact.
The Ravens had a good start against the Mustangs, taking an early lead in the first quarter with a big presence from veteran forward Kevin McCleery (Ottawa) in the paint, who scored 16 of the Ravens' 35 first half points.
Carleton continued to feed the ball into the post in the second half of play, but shots just would not fall for the Ravens. The Mustangs would come back strong to get it within two points, 50-52, the closest they would get all game, by the end of the third quarter. But despite a great effort on defence in the first four minutes of the second half, the Mustangs would outscore the Ravens 25-17.
The fourth quarter saw both teams battling it out basket for basket. Third year guard Elliot Thompson (Fredericton) soared through the air to intercept a Mustang pass, and scored an open lay-up on the other end of the court. Teammate Willy Manigat (Montreal) stepped up in the second half as well going to the hoop hard and adding points from the line.
Manigat was Carleton's leading scorer with 23 points while McCleery added 21 points in the victory. The Mustangs were led by third-year point guard Ryan Barbeau (Belleville, Ont.) with 24 points.
