OUA M-BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: NO. 9 LANCERS UPSET NO. 6 MUSTANGS
With the victory, the No. 9-ranked Lancers move to 8-5 on the season and now sit only two games back of the division lead in the OUA West Division.
Windsor got out to a fast start as Greg Surmacz (Peterborough, Ont.) electrified the capacity crowd with a spectacular offensive display from in the post and from the outside.
The Mustangs had no answer for Surmacz as Windsor got off to a fast start. Western struggled to find their rhythm at the offensive end as the Lancers built a 16-4 lead to open the game and they led 22-8 after one quarter of the play.
In the second quarter, the Lancers continued to attack the Mustangs at the offensive end, as Andre Smyth (Windsor, Ont.) and Nigel Johnson-Tygther (Brampton, Ont. ) did a great job rebounding the ball and get their team second looks. Windsor hit consistently from the outside and scored inside as they led 33-17 at the break.
The second half was more of the same as Western was unable to find any answers at the offensive end against a stingy Lancer defence.
Windsor outscored the Mustangs 24-20 in the third quarter as they cruised to the 77-68 victory.
In the win, Surmacz continued to be a dominating force as he finished with 20 points and 6 rebounds. Steve Priolo (St. Catharines, Ont.) had an impressive game as he chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds while Smyth added nine points and eight rebounds.
Johnson-Tygther was a physical force inside again as he added eight points and 11 rebounds.

LAURIER 84, MCMASTER 71
WATERLOO, Ont. – Jesse MacDonald (Brantford, Ont.) had 19 points for the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (5-8) as they went on to defeat the McMaster Marauders (8-5) 84-71. The Marauders currently sit in second place in the OUA West.
"We had a lot of people contribute to our success," commented head coach Peter Campbell. "In the fourth quarter the guys pulled together and sunk the baskets we needed."
The Golden Hawks jumped out to an early 10-point lead late in the first quarter and kept working the Marauder defenders. The home team continued to score, extending their lead to 17 points by the second frame. Laurier took 48 shots compared to the Marauders' 30 in the half and MacDonald led the Hawks in scoring at the break with 12.
McMaster pushed the Hawks in the third frame, outscoring them 21-18, but Laurier's secondary scoring kept them in the game. The purple and gold continued to play with the Marauders in the fourth, matching basket for basket, but the visitor's foul trouble shortened their bench and their options.
Five Golden Hawks hit double-digits including MacDonald with 19, Kale Harrison (Stratford, Ont.) with 13, Matthew Buckey (Waterloo, Ont.) with 13, Travis Berry (St. Catharines, Ont.) with 11 and Justin Golob (St. Catharines, Ont.) with 11. Buckley led the team on the boards with seven rebounds, while MacDonald led the team in shooting, hitting 50 percent of his three-point shots.
The Marauders were led by Mouctar Daiby (Hamilton, Ont.) with 15 points and seven rebounds. Marko Gacic (Hamilton, Ont.) put down 14 points while Jermaine De Costa (Hamilton, Ont.) scored 13. Four of the five McMaster starters accrued four or more fouls during the match.

GUELPH 74, BROCK 60
GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons veteran trio combined for 44 points to lead the men's basketball team to a 74-60 victory over the Brock Badgers at the W.F. Mitchell Athletic Centre. The win gives the fifth place Gryphons (5-8) some momentum heading into a regular season game this weekend against the second place McMaster Marauders (8-5) in Hamilton.
The Gryphons sparkled from the free throw line, shooting 82.4 percent, making good on 14-of-17, compared to Brock's 11-of-21 free throws. Guelph's stingy defence was also noteworthy, scoring 21 points off Brock's 19 turnovers.
The Badgers made a run late in the third quarter to cut the lead to single digits (42-37) with about two minutes to go in the quarter, but then fifth-year player Nick Pankerichan (Hamilton, Ont.) stepped up and nailed one of his three three-pointers of the night. He went on to score a team-high 16 points.
Fifth-year centre Duncan Milne (Calgary, Alta) was outstanding notching a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, including scoring a clutch 7-of-10 from the throw line. Fourth-year player Jay Mott (Burlington, Ont.) also had a great game, scoring 13 points and grabbing five rebounds.
The Badgers had two players in double-digits with Didi Mukendi (St. Catharines, Ont.) and Owen White (Port Hope, Ont.) scoring 17 points apiece.
