OUA M-BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: NO. 1 RAVENS, NO. 2 GEE-GEES TAKE 13-1 RECORDS INTO WEDNESDAY SHOWDOWN
The Ravens led Saturday's game from opening to closing whistle leading by 13 points after the first quarter, 27-14. Carleton withstood a strong Queen's second quarter in which the Gaels matched Carleton point for point, losing the second stanza by one point, 28-27. The Ravens went back to dominating the game in the second half outscoring Queen's 45-34 to win their 13th league game of the season by 25 points.
The Ravens were led by their fifth year veteran tri-captains, guard Stuart Turnbull (Kingston, Ont.) with 23 points and seven rebounds; Aaron Doornekamp (Odessa, Ont.) with 21 points, seven assists and six rebounds; and Rob Saunders (Kingston, Ont.) with 11 points, two assists and two rebounds. Saturday's game marks the final time the trio will play in their hometown during their great OUA/CIS careers with the Carleton Ravens.
Mike Kenny (Ottawa, Ont.) added 14 points, Cole Hobin (Ashton, Ont.) 13 points, and Kevin McCleery (Ottawa, Ont.) with 11 points as six different Ravens registered double figures in the victory over Queen's. The Ravens out rebounded Queen's 35-32 for the game.
The Gaels were led by Baris Ondul (Istanbul, Turkey) with a team high 17-point performance.

NO. 2 OTTAWA 89, RMC 36
KINGSTON, Ont. - Fourth-year guard Donnie Gibson (Kingston, Ont.) poured in 19 points over just 17 minutes in a rare Saturday afternoon start for the Ottawa Gee-Gees men’s basketball team with an anticipated result, a dominant 89-36 effort over winless RMC at Kingston.
The No. 2 Gee-Gees won a 13th consecutive game after building a commanding 43-16 lead at the half.
The 10 Gee-Gees dressed for the game each played at least 17 minutes, with five scoring 10 points or better.
Gee-Gees rookie Louis Gauthier (Ottawa, Ont.), a third-year forward, scored 10 points with 10 rebounds.
"We got to work on a few things," said Gee-Gees head coach Dave DeAveiro. "And luckily nobody got hurt."
uOttawa did not dress fifth-year forward and team captain David Labentowicz (Richmond Hill, Ont.) along with fourth-year transfer guard Josh Wright (Utica, N.Y.).
The Gee-Gees face No. 1 Carleton in the 2009 MBNA Capital Hoops Classic this Wednesday at Scotiabank Place.

NO. 6 WESTERN 99, LAURIER 68
WATERLOO, Ont. – The No. 6 Western Mustangs scored 60 second-half points to defeat the host Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 99-68 at the Wilfrid Laurier Athletic Complex.
Laurier scored early and often in the first quarter, led by Kale Harrison (Stratford, Ont.) who gave the Hawks their first 10-point lead of the game. The Hawks continued to press the Mustangs, but some missed shots combined with Western’s solid shooting cut Laurier’s lead to just seven points.
The visitors stormed back in the second frame and brought the match to a tie before Laurier made some tough shots to extend the lead back to nine by the break. Jesse MacDonald (Brantford, Ont.) picked up 12 points in the first half.
Turnovers started costing the Golden Hawks in the third quarter as three successive ones allowed the Mustangs to cut into the lead once again. The visitors picked up their first lead of the game at 6:47 off a jump shot from Bradley Smith (Innisfil, Ont.). The see-saw game continued as the Mustangs opened up their own seven-point lead before the Hawks cut it back down. Western’s defence effectively shut down the purple and gold for the rest of the game, while the Mustangs offence blew up and scored 60 second-half points.
Harrison led the Golden Hawks in scoring with 17 points, ten of which were scored in the second frame. MacDonald scored 15 and Evan Schwantz (Guelph, Ont.) put down 10 in the loss. Harrison and Schwantz both had a team-high five rebounds.
Western's Bradley Smith (Churchill, Ont.) scored a game-high 26 points, hitting 11-of-21 shots from the floor. Andrew Wedemire (Sarnia, Ont.) and Colin LaForme (Hamilton, Ont.) both picked up 14 points in the win, while Laforme also had 10 boards to notch a double-double. Keenan Jeppesen (Stoney Creek, Ont.) also picked up a double-double for Western with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Rounding out the scoring for the visitors was Alex Brzozowicz (Oak Park, Ill.) with 12.

NO. 9 WINDSOR 61, BROCK 57
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock Badgers men's basketball team dropped a 61-57 decision to the No. 9-ranked Windsor Lancers at home Saturday afternoon.
The Badgers trailed 36-24 at the half, before going on a 13-0 run to open the third quarter leading 37-36 with five minutes left in the third.
In the fourth quarter, the teams would exchange baskets early on. With the score tied 50-50 with just over six minutes remaining, the Lancers would answer with back-to-back three-pointers from Matt Handsor (Chatham, Ont.) and Andre Smyth (Windsor, Ont.). Next trip down the court, Greg Surmacz (Peterborough, Ont.) would lay it in putting Windsor up 58-50 with 3:20 left.
The Badgers would battle from behind late on a three-pointer from freshman Joel Whitty (St. Catharines, Ont.) making it a one-possession game, 60-57, with four seconds left.
Windsor's Cory Boswell (Detroit, Mich.) would knock down one of two from the charity stripe to seal the victory.
Brock had two players in double figures led by freshman Didi Mukendi (St. Catharines, Ont.) who registered 17 points and four assists. Whitty contributed with 11 points in the loss.
Leading the Lancers was Surmacz who recorded the double-double adding 21 points and 11 rebounds.
Brock continued to struggle from the field shooting just 28.2 percent (20-of-71), which included 17.4 percent (4-of-23) from beyond the arc. Windsor shot 44.4 percent (24-of-54) from the floor.
