OUA M-BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: NO. 5 MUSTANGS DOWN NO. 9 LANCERS
The Western Mustangs emerged as victors in a 90-76 win over the Windsor Lancers to split the season series, after a slow start which saw them down eight points at the end of the first quarter.
Fittingly on seniors' night, it was the vets who led the way for the Mustangs.
Keenan Jeppesen (Stoney Creek, Ont.) had another strong game with 24 points, eight rebounds and four steals. He started the Western comeback in the second quarter.
Brad Smith (Churchill, Ont.), Western's all-time leading scorer who now has 1470 career points, added 22 points and eight boards.
Garrett Olexiuk (Burlington, Ont.) had a strong game defensively, limiting Greg Surmacz (Peterborough, Ont.) to 5-of-18 shooting and 16 points and just two rebounds. Olexiuk had seven offensive rebounds for nine total and added 11 points and three assists.
For the second time this year, Nigel Johnson-Tyghter (Brampton, Ont.) had a really strong game against Western, scoring 15 points and adding 10 boards.
Western outscored the Lancers 24-13 in the second quarter and 47-36 in the second half to hold on to the victory. The Mustangs improve to 18-3 and will travel to play in St. Catharines, Ont. on Feb. 21 against a Brock team fighting for its playoff lives.
