RAVENS MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM TAME TOWSON TIGERS
Ravens fans got their first look at this year's squad, with new faces like Tyson Hinz (Ottawa), Greg Faulkner (Kingston, Ont.) and Scott Ring (Orleans, Ont.) in the line-up. The new look Ravens came out flying and jumped out to an early 16-2 lead, showing why Carleton has won six of the last seven CIS national championships. But Towson regrouped and closed the gap with the help of Josh Thornton (Rochester, N.Y.). The guard netted 12 points by the end of the half to lead all scorers and bring the visitors within four at intermission with the score 36-32.
In the second half, the Ravens built up their lead again and never looked back, leading the rest of the game. They outscored the Tigers by eight points in the last 20 minutes to win the game 95-83.
Cole Hobin (Ashton, Ont.) led the Ravens with a team-high 23 points. Hinz made a good first impression, scoring 18 points. Three other Ravens hit double digits – Elliot Thompson (Fredericton, N.B.) with 16, Mike Kenny (Ottawa, Ont.) with 13 and Kevin McCleery (Ottawa, Ont.) with 10. Thornton, Troy Franklin (Baltimore, Md.) and Calvin Lee (Ettrick, Va.) led the Tigers with 28, 15 and 13 points respectively.
The Ravens outboarded the Tigers 39-22, led by McCleery, who grabbed nine rebounds. The Tigers top rebounders were Robert Nwankwo (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and Lee, with 5 boards each.
Towson will travel to Montreal and Quebec City as they continue on their six-game trip north of the border.
The Ravens will look ahead to their next NCAA challenge against St. John's University on Sept. 6. Tip-off is at 1 p.m.
