OUA M-BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: NO. 1 CARLETON IMPROVES TO 9-1
The first half was very close as Ryerson competed with the Ravens early, holding Carleton to a two-point lead, 23-21, at the end of the first quarter. Ryerson continued to give Carleton a challenge until three minutes remaining in the first half, when several missed shots and foul trouble left the Rams trailing by eight points, 39-31, at the break.
The second half started with the defending OUA champions going on a 12-0 run and defensively shutting Ryerson down, holding the Ram offence to nine third-quarter points and opening up a 29-point lead going into the fourth quarter, where Carleton continued to build on their lead to win going away by 36 points. The Ravens played one of their more dominating halves of basketball in the second half winning the half by 28 points.
Stuart Turnbull (Kingston, Ont.) and Kevin McCleery (Ottawa, Ont.) led the Ravens with 20 points each. The only other Bird in double figures was Rob Saunders (Kingston, Ont.) with 10 points. Ten different Ravens scored at least three points in the victory over Ryerson. McCleery led the Ravens with eight total rebounds as Carleton out rebounded Ryerson 35-16 for the game.
The Rams top scorer was Boris Bokovic (Toronto, Ont.) with a team-high 18 points and five total rebounds.
The Ravens now go on the road for the next two weeks traveling next weekend to Sudbury (Laurentian University) and North York (York University) and the following weekend to Toronto to face the Varsity Blues and Ryerson before returning home on Wed., Jan. 28 to face their arch rivals, the University of Ottawa, at Scotiabank Place, in the 3rd Annual MBNA Capital Hoops Classic.

NO. 4 OTTAWA 80, TORONTO 72
OTTAWA, Ont. - Fourth-year transfer guard Josh Wright scored a game-high 28 points, adding five rebounds to pace No. 4 Ottawa Gee-Gees men's basketball team to a 80-72 home win Saturday over Toronto.
Wright, who played three years at Syracuse, also contributed four steals and three assists in his fifth game with the Gee-Gees (three exhibition, two regular season) for uOttawa's ninth straight win.
"I think it was a statement game for our entire team," said Wright, of Utica, New York. "We're getting as a team and it is showing out on the court."
Fifth-year post player Dax Dessureault (Embrun, Ont.) scored 22 points with nine rebounds for the Gee-Gees.
"We're deep now that Josh Wright is here," said Dessureault. "We didn't want any let-downs this weekend."
Wright paced the Gee-Gees with 10 points, two steals and an assist in the first half as uOttawa managed a five point lead (27-22) despite 14 points from fourth-year Varsity Blues guard Rob Paris (St. Catharines, Ont.).
Paris was the 6-5 Varsity Blue top scorer with 24 points and five rebounds.

WATERLOO 73, NO. 6 WINDSOR 70
WINDSOR, Ont. - The Windsor Lancers men's basketball team were defeated by the Waterloo Warriors 73-70 at the St. Denis Centre on Saturday night.
With the loss, the Lancers fall to 6-4 on the season in conference play.
On Saturday night, both teams got out of the gate well at the offensive end, as the two squads traded baskets to open the game.
The Warriors build a lead early on thanks to some solid perimeter shooting by Cam McIntyre (Waterloo, Ont.) and held a 30-23 lead after one quarter of play.
The second quarter continued to be a close affair as the Warriors found success by creating space on the outside and knocking down a number of clutch buckets.
Windsor was held in the game by CIS All-Canadian Greg Surmacz (Peterborough, Ont.) who hit three from long-range in the first half and scored consistently in the post. The half came to a close with Waterloo leading Windsor 45-39.
The second half continued to be a close battle as neither team could build a sustained lead. Windsor erased a 66-59 deficit late in the game but ultimately fell to the Warriors 73-70.
In the loss, Surmacz led all scorers with 20 points and eight rebounds. Isaac Kuon (Mississauga, Ont.) added 19 points and four rebounds. Nigel Johnson-Tyghter (Brampton, Ont.) had a strong game in the post as he finished with nine points and 10 rebounds.
The Lancers will be back in action on Wednesday as they travel to Hamilton to battle the McMaster Marauders. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.

NO. 9 WESTERN 80, GUELPH 50
GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphon men's basketball team dropped its New Year home opener to the No. 9 nationally-ranked Western Mustangs 80-50 Saturday afternoon at the W.F. Mitchell Athletic Centre. The loss marks a six-game losing streak for Guelph, which falls to 3-7 in the regular season. Meanwhile the Mustangs shot an impressive 75 percent (18-for-24) from the field in the second half to improve to 8-2 on the season.
The Gryphons started the game with a balanced scoring attack, trailing by only six points, 22-16, at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter a pair of three-pointers by Charles Agyemang (Toronto, Ont.) tied the game 22-22 in the opening minutes. For the remainder of the quarter the teams traded leads until the Mustangs ramped up their defence and went on a 10-1 run in the last two minutes to go into the half with a 34-29 lead.
In the third quarter, the Mustangs flew out of the gates going on a 29-10 run to stifle the Gryphons. The Gryphons scored just four points during a seven-minute span as the Mustangs made their rally. Overall the Mustangs doubled the Gryphons output in the second half, outscoring Guelph 46-21 en route to the victory.
The Mustangs shot a lights-out second half performance including 75 percent (18-for-24) from the field to finish with 59 percent (31-for-52) for the game. Guelph shot a season-low 26 percent (16-for-61) from the field. Western out-worked the Gryphons on the glass, 39-26.
Second-year guard Jonathan Moscatelli (Toronto, Ont.) and first-year guard Dan McCarthy (Guelph, Ont.) led the Gryphons with 11 points apiece. The pair was the only double-digit scorers for the Gryphons. Nick Pankerichan (Hamilton, Ont.) followed behind in scoring with eight points.
Western was led by three players who entered double digits. Bradley Smith (Churchill, Ont.) had a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds followed by Matthew Curtis (Hamilton, Ont.) and Keenan Jeppesen (Stoney Creek, Ont.) notching 13 and 12 points respectively.
Up next, the Gryphons are back in action at the W.F. Mitchell Centre this Wed., Jan. 14 against the Laurier Golden Hawks (3-7). Tip off is set for 8:00 p.m.
