Chown, Hughes, Ivanov, Redelaar named OUA athletes of the week
Burlington, Ont. – Hannah Chown, Ryan Hughes, Alexei Ivanov, and Juliet Redelaar have been named OUA athletes of the week for the period ending November 2, 2025.
Hannah Chown, Soccer, Toronto Varsity Blues
The fifth-year captain for the Varsity Blues and OUA East MVP delivered a gold medal winning performance in Toronto’s 1-0 OUA championship victory over the Guelph Gryphons this past Saturday.
A five-time OUA all-star, Chown was tasked with shutting down one of the top offensive teams in the Gryphons, including the OUA West MVP. Serving as Toronto's primary centre back all season long, Chown did exactly that, helping Toronto to a clean sheet victory.
The Varsity Blues veteran was not only stellar defensively, but also secured the gold medal-winning goal, converting a header from a U of T corner kick in the 70th minute. Her outstanding Saturday performance earned her OUA championship MVP honours and marked history as it secured the first OUA championship banner in Toronto’s women's soccer program history.
Ryan Hughes, Football, Laurier Golden Hawks
Hughes was a big reason why the Laurier Golden Hawks are heading to a third-straight Yates Cup and look to defend their 2025 championship title.
With the team's top receiver Ethan Jordan out of the line-up for the semifinal match-up against the Guelph Gryphons, Hughes, a third-year arts major from Mississauga, Ont., provided some continuity for quarterback Cal Wither.
With a game-high nine receptions, Hughes logged a season-high 161 yards through the air and gathered in two scores. One of his touchdowns coming on a 53-yard connection - to pace the Laurier offence in a 37-30 win over the visiting Gryphons.
Alexei Ivanov, Soccer, Toronto Varsity Blues
Captain for the Varsity Blues men’s soccer team, Ivanov did everything he could to help Toronto secure the OUA gold medal in a 2-0 overtime victory versus the York Lions in the championship final on Saturday.
The lead centre back for the Blues, Ivanov was tasked with shutting down the attack of perennial powerhouse York, including the OUA West MVP. Playing the full 120 minutes of the overtime thriller at Varsity Stadium, Ivanov played a pivotal role in the clean sheet effort from the home side, including a critical play nearing the final 10 minutes of regulation where he deflected a Lions shot away from a wide open Blues net. Battling throughout the entirety of the highly intense physical match, Ivanov was named player of the match after playing such a crucial role in the Varsity Blues OUA championship victory.
Juliet Redelaar, Field Hockey, York Lions
Redelaar provided history for the York Lions field hockey team, scoring the winning goal inside the final three minutes to help secure the program's first ever national title in a 1-0 win over the Victoria Vikes, ending the Vikes’ streak of six straight national championship banners.
The third-year neuroscience major also played a huge part in getting the Lions to the championship final, scoring twice in York's lone win of round-robin play, after a pair of scoreless draws, a 5-0 win over the Dalhousie Tigers.
For the tournament, Redelaar accounted for half of the Lions’ goal scoring output, netting three of the six York goals, leading them atop the national mountain.
