HAWKS CLAIM 5TH CONSECUTIVE OUA LACROSSE BANNER
WATERLOO – The Golden Hawk women’s field lacrosse team has claimed their fifth consecutive provincial title on Sunday afternoon after a 9-6 victory over the Queen’s Golden Gaels at Knight-Newbrough Field, University Stadium.
The women’s hockey team is the only other Wilfrid Laurier program to hold a significant run banner. Women’s hockey has won the last four dating back to the 2003/04 season.
The win for Lacrosse, is their third consecutive over Queen’s in the gold medal match. Last season saw a close 7-5 win and the year before 8-7.
OUA Offensive player of the year Kirsten Gerrie (Orillia, Ont.) led the team with three goals in the contest. Provincial Rookie of the Year Jayme Beard (Hawkestone, Ont.) was just behind with her adding a pair. Amy Fincham (Greenbank, Ont.), Laura Juha (Mississauga, Ont.), Megan Fox (Whitby, Ont.), Amanda Marshall (Brampton, Ont.)
For the Gaels, Martha Ross led with three markers which got by goalie Alanna Doxtdator (Caledonia, Ont.). Carly Miller, Kaleigh Ross and Lisa McLaughlin had the balance for Queen’s.
The gold medal is the sixth for the program, which was first recognized as an OUA sport in 1999.
