OUA LACROSSE CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW
HAMILTON, Ont. - Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Lacrosse Championship will be hosted by Wilfrid Laurier University commencing Friday, October 26 with quarter-final match-ups at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm. Top-ranked Laurier from the east and the University of Toronto from the west await the outcome of Friday's matches after winning their respective divisions this season. The Golden Hawks have won four straight OUA championships, while Toronto claimed two consecutive titles prior to Laurier's recent domination of the Patterson Cup. The championship concludes Sunday, October 28, with the OUA bronze medal match at 12:00 pm and the gold medal game at 2:00 pm at Knight Newborough Field, University Stadium, in Waterloo.
Laurier is the top team heading into this weekend's OUA championship after finishing the regular season with a perfect 6-0 record for a league high of 12 points. As the number one seeded team, the Golden Hawks await the winners of Friday's quarterfinal matches to play the lowest remaining seed out of the round. Third year player Kirsten Gerrie (Orillia, Ont.) has been instrumental in the Hawks success this season, leading the OUA with 17 goals and nine assists, totaling 26 points. Teammate Heather McHardy (Whitby, Ont.) also has 26 points on the season from 12 goals and 14 assists in her 2007 campaign. The two will surely make an impact in their semi-final match Saturday, October 27 at 2:00 pm.
Second-seeded Toronto is right behind Laurier in the overall standings as they will face the highest remaining seed out of the quarter-final round. The Varsity Blues capped their regular season with a 5-1 record for top sport in the east and ten points overall. Veteran Blue, Jennifer Held (Brampton, Ont.) is the biggest offensive threat. She has recorded 16 goals and eight assists in six games this season.
The University of Guelph takes on Queen's University in the opening quarter-final game of the tournament at 1:00pm Friday. Guelph hopes to improve upon their 1-6 season as they strive to earn a second win and knock off the Golden Gaels. McGill University faces off against the University of Western Ontario in the second quarter-final match. Both teams completed the regular season even with three wins and three losses each. An exciting weekend of lacrosse is taking form as Championship weekend approaches.
