OUA LACROSSE MAJOR AWARD WINNERS AND ALL-STARS ANNOUNCED
HAMILTON, Ont. - Ontario University Athletics (OUA) is pleased to announce the 2007 Lacrosse major award winners and all-stars. Wilfrid Laurier University steals the show, claiming three major awards following a stellar season and a first place regular season finish. The Golden Hawks also have four athletes named to the all-star teams. Following suit is the University of Toronto and Queen's University, each with four all-stars on the first and second teams.
Kirsten Gerrie (Orillia, Ont.), a third year member of Laurier, was a major force for the Hawks, scoring 17 goals and nine assists, totaling 26 points. Gerrie leads the OUA with this figure and it is her offensive leadership that has earned her the Most Valuable Offensive Player of the Year award. Teammate Britt Boynton (Orillia, Ont.) is honored with the Most Valuable Defensive Player of the Year award after directing a stingy Hawk defense to an OUA low of 29 goals against this season. The Rookie of the Year honoree is also a member of the Hawks. Midfielder Jayme Beard (Hawkestone, Ont.) tallied 14 goals and seven assists in six games, establishing herself as an offensive threat in the OUA.
Queen's University's Ruth McArther (Brampton, Ont.) is named Most Sportsmanlike Player of the Year and also receives a second-team all-star nod, heading the Golden Gael defense. In 2006, McArthur was a first-team all-star and named Most Valuable Defensive Player. Todd Pepper of Toronto is recognized as Coach of the Year, guiding the Blues to an impressive 5-1 record for top spot in the east.
Amy Finchman (Greenbank, Ont.) of Laurier joins Gerrie, Beard and Boynton on the first-team of all-stars. Toronto's Jen Held (Brampton, Ont.) and defender Tasha Saunders (Toronto, Ont.) represent the Blues as first-team members, while midfielder Lisa McLaughlin (Whitby, Ont.) of Queen's and Callie Millar (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.) of the University of Guelph round out the first-team all-stars.
