Gryphons win in straight sets to sweep season series with Warriors
GUELPH, ON - Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre, the Gryphons men's volleyball team won in straight sets over the visiting Waterloo Warriors. Set scores were 25-14, 25-22 & 25-22. With the win, the Gryphons sweep the season series with Waterloo and improve to 8-4 overall on the season. For the Warriors meanwhile, the loss sees their record fall to 5-6.
Gryphons third year middle blocker Kendrick Kerr was, in a word, dominant on Friday night. The Georgetown native finished with a team-high 16.5 points (10 kills, 3 aces). The 16.5 points were the most he has registered in three-set match this season. Aside from leading the attack, Kerr was also helping lead the way defensively for the Gryphs. The Gryphons limited the Warriors to a .131 kill percentage on the night.
"Kenny was so good tonight. Both our middles were," said Gryphons head coach Cal Wigston after the match. "Right from the very first whistle, I thought Kenny was just reading the game really well and just involved when we needed him to be. He had a great night."
While Kerr's stats jumped out from the box score, Coach Wigston was also quick to praise third year setter Samuel Kloke. "I thought Sam was really the unsung hero for us tonight. He did a great job distributing the ball, and he was constantly on the run with everything we were digging up. He even got a few touches on some blocks when he was matching up against their (Waterloo's) 6'11" outside hitter. It was a really good win for our group."
The Gryphons will look to for a third straight win next Friday (Feb. 10) when they host the 2-8 Windsor Lancers. That game marks the first of back-to-back contests for the Gryphs, who will host the Western Mustangs (6-4) on Saturday, February 11. The Gryphons currently sit 2nd in the OUA West with five games remaining on the regular season schedule.
