Lion's volleyball use team bonding to help clean up Keele campus

The York University Lions men's volleyball team took it upon themselves to help out their community, last week using a pre-season bonding exercise to clean up some of the garbage around Keele campus.
 
The Lions reported for training camp earlier this month and have spent several days on the court preparing for the upcoming 2016-17 campaign. But the young team also made sure to build in time to get to know each other off the court and used the clean-up as a way to make that happen.
 
"We took a page from Legacy by James Kerr, who wrote about why the All Blacks from New Zealand were so successful, and one of their principles was 'sweep the shed'," said head coach Wally Dyba. "For us, it was a constructive bonding exercise that proved to be a great way to get our season started."
 
The team picked up plenty of the usual debris and also had some interesting finds, most notably a 500 Euro note that was found by second-year middle blocker Toure Nwakwesi (Brampton, Ont.) and returned to its owner.
 
The Lions will continue to get ready for the new season and will take to the court for the first time in two weeks, when they travel to Humber College for their annual pre-season tournament. Their first OUA game is set for Friday, Nov. 4 against the Nipissing Lakers at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
