Heard, Poulin named OUA athletes of the week
Burlington, Ont. – Katherine Heard and Kyana-Jade Poulin have been named OUA athletes of the week for the period ending January 25, 2026.
Katherine Heard, Guelph Gryphons, Hockey
Heard, the team captain of the Guelph Gryphons played a key role in her team's sweep on the road over the weekend. With the game still scoreless on Friday night against the TMU Bold, it was the sociology major who came through for the Gryphons as Heard took the pass from Avery Robinson in overtime and wired home the game's only goal to lead her side to a 1-0 OT win.
It was a quick turnaround for the team as they were back on the ice on Saturday afternoon in Kingston against the Queen’s Gaels and it was Heard who made her imprint felt again. In the second period, the fifth-year forward started Guelph on the rush as she pounced on the rebound and scored to extend her goal scoring streak to four games and give her side the 2-0 lead.
Heard added an assist to her name in the third when she set up Maeve Sutherland-Case for the team's fourth goal of the contest in their 4-1 road win.
In January, Heard has been on fire, scoring in four straight games and has six points in the month, vaulting her to sixth in the OUA with 18 points on the season. The Avra, Ont. native is also tied for third in the conference with 12 assists.
Kyana-Jade Poulin, Carleton Ravens, Basketball
Poulin continued to be a force for the Carleton Ravens on both ends of the court. Over the weekend, she averaged 25.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per night as she led all scorers, in the Ravens’ two road wins.
On Friday, against the York Lions Poulin had 24 points and five rebounds, while helping her teammates with two assists, in Carleton’s 64-58 win on the road. Poulin was 9-for-18 from the floor and 3-for-5 from beyond the arc.
The fourth-year guard elevated her game one step further on Saturday putting up her second double-double of the season with 27 points and 14 rebounds She rounded out her statline with four assists, one steal, and one block, in the Ravens’ 78-55 win over McMaster.
The Montreal, Que. product’s weekend added to her already impressive season where she sits fifth in the league with 18.4 points per game and 49 assists. She has been a significant factor in the Ravens’ solid season that has them sitting in second place in the OUA East with a 11-5 record.
