
Lafond, McKinnon, Morneau named OUA athletes of the week
Burlington, Ont. – Emilie Lafond, Lyla McKinnon and Gio Morneau have been named OUA athletes of the week for the period ending December 1, 2024.
Emilie Lafond, Laurentian Voyageurs, Basketball
Lafond was the driving force for the Laurentian Voyageurs in their dramatic 75-70 overtime win over the Waterloo Warriors. The Sudbury, Ont. native put up a career-high 31 points in the victory, including seven points in the overtime quarter. She added six rebounds, two assists, and two steals to her stat line in the contest.
The fourth-year health promotion student now leads the OUA in scoring, averaging 18.9 points per game.
Lyla McKinnon, Toronto Varsity Blues, Hockey
McKinnon, a first-year social science student, delivered back-to-back wins for the Toronto Varsity Blues this past weekend. She began her impressive run with a 22-save shutout performance versus the Windsor Lancers on Friday night at home. The rookie netminder earned her first career OUA shutout in the 2-0 victory.
McKinnon then followed that up with an even more impressive 22 saves in their 2-1 overtime win over the nationally-ranked Waterloo Warriors on Saturday. The Toronto, Ont. native conceded just one goal across the entirety of the seven periods this weekend.
McKinnon now has six wins, leading all rookie goaltenders in the OUA, while holding a 2.29 goals-against average and .915 save percentage through 12 total appearances during the fall semester.
Gio Morneau, Carleton Ravens, Hockey
The hero of the Colonel By Classic, Morneau continued his red-hot rookie season over the weekend as the Carleton Ravens picked up back-to-back wins over the Ottawa Gee-Gees. The first-year commerce student had two assists in Carleton’s 6-3 win on Friday night.
Less than 24 hours later the local Ottawa product scored two goals and an assist, including the overtime winner in front of a ruckus crowd at TD Place in the Ravens 5-4 victory.
Morneau leads all OUA rookies in goals and is one point behind in the OUA rookie scoring race.
