AROUND OUA: Wakefield is captain clutch as Queen's extends their win-streak to eight games
KINGSTON, Ont. (January 27, 2017) – The Queen's Gaels (8-4-6-0) defeated the Laurentian Voyageurs (9-0-8-2) 4-3 in a shootout Friday evening as the Gaels came all the way back from a 2-0 first period deficit.

KINGSTON, Ont. (January 27, 2017) – The Queen's Gaels (8-4-6-0) defeated the Laurentian Voyageurs (9-0-8-2) 4-3 in a shootout Friday evening as the Gaels came all the way back from a 2-0 first period deficit.

In the first period the momentum was very even, but the Laurentian Voyageurs were first to get on the scoreboard. Early in the period, Jessica Staats scored for the Voyageurs, shooting in a rebound in front of the net. Marie-Pierre Pelissou picked up an assist on the play. Several minutes later, the Voyageurs capitalized on a power-play opportunity to take a 2-0 lead. Morgan McCann scored for the Voyageurs with Sara Habal and Maggie Brennan assisting on the play. This gave the Voyageurs a 2-0 lead heading into the second period.
In the second, the Gaels fought back. In the seventh minute, Hailey Wilson (Pickering, Ont.) scored for the Gaels on a rebound shot, cutting the Voyageurs lead to 2-1. Emily Gervais (Kamloops, B.C.) and Clare McKellar (London, Ont.) assisted on the play. After a number of chances, this proved to be the only goal of the period.
In the third, Katrina Manoukarakis (Scarborough, Ont.) tied the game 2-2 in the first minute, scoring on a breakaway. Nearing the end of the period, Laurentian once again took the lead. Myla McCormick scored for the Voyageurs with Taylor Philip and Samantha Morell assisting. With one minute left in the period, Queen's was given a penalty shot opportunity after a Laurentian player intentionally pushed the net off. Jessica Wakefield (Lucan, Ont.) took the penalty shot and scored on a beautiful deke. This tied the game 3-3, and ultimately forced overtime.
After two scoreless overtime periods the game was decided in a shootout. Wakefield scored as the Gaels first shooter. This proved to be the deciding goal and game-winner, allowing the Gaels to take a 4-3 final.

Powerplay propels Blues to win over Ridgebacks
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team scored four powerplay and one shorthanded goal as they defeated the UOIT Ridgebacks 5-1 in their 10th annual Think Pink game on Friday night (Jan. 27) at Varsity Arena.
With the win, the Blues improve to 11-1-6-0 (W-OTW-L-OTL) and remain in sole possession of third place in the OUA standings.
The Blues women's hockey team has raised over $2500 in support of the campaign. Blues netminder Valencia Yordanov is also set to cut her hair at tomorrow afternoon's women's basketball halftime presentation.
Toronto was paced by team captain Kristi Riseley, who notched two goals and added one assist in the win. Blues leading scorer Taylor Day added one goal and one assist, while defencemen Rebecca Bourgeois and Julia Szulewka both had two assists on the night.
Day opened the scoring late in the first period as she received a stretch pass from Bourgeois for the breakaway. The fifth-year forward from Ilderton, Ont., made no mistake, burying the rebound after her first shot for her team-leading 12th goal of the season.
Toronto was up 1-0 heading into the first intermission.
Blues veteran Katherine Gale extended Toronto's lead 7:27 into the second frame as she buried a rebound off a Bourgeois point shot on the powerplay.
Fellow third-year forward Meagan O'Brien put the Blues up by three at the 14:41 mark of the second period. The Brampton, Ont., native finished off a passing play down low with linemates Kassie Roche and Riseley for her second goal of the season.
Riseley put the Blues up 4-0 late in the second frame as she made good on a nice tic-tac-toe play from Szulewska and Day, also on the man advantage.
UOIT captain Mikaeli Cavell spoiled the shut out, sending a nice shot five hole just 46 seconds into the third period, but Riseley tallied her second of the game seven minutes later, tipping a Szulewska point shot on the powerplay.
Yordanov made 21 saves in her first win of 2017.
The Varsity Blues honoured breast cancer survivor Lydia Modonado with a special ceremonial puck drop prior to tonight's game.
Varsity Blues hockey student coordinator Madison Danford also cut her hair in support of the cause during the first intermission.
The Varsity Blues return to action Sunday night (Jan. 29) as they travel to Waterloo, Ont., to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
