GUELPH, ON – A three goal outburst in the third period was the difference on Wednesday night at the Gryphon Centre as the Gryphons women's hockey team was able to push their win streak to five games in a 4-2 victory over the Ryerson Rams. The Gryphons improve to 13-2-1 on the season and sit atop the OUA standings. The Rams meanwhile fall to 5-7-3.
Defence was the name of the game through the first 40 minutes of play with quality scoring chances few and far between. There was just one goal to speak of through two periods of play, and it belonged to the Gryphons after defenceman Katherine Bailey's wrist shot from the blueline found its way to the top corner for to give the Gryphs a 1-0 lead heading to the third period. For Bailey, it marked her third goal of the season and first since October 30th.
The Rams would jump on the Gryphons early in the third and tie the game at 1-1 with a power play goal of their own. But the Gryphons would take control from there scoring three times in the span of 6:21. Second year forward Ashlee Lawrence got things started with a shot that deflected off the post, off the back of the Ryerson goalie, and in for her second of the season. Kaitlin Lowy's team-leading 11th goal of the season came on the power play as she would pot home the rebound off a Sydney Davison shot to put Guelph up 3-1.
The Gryphons scoring on the night would be capped by rookie forward Emma Forcey (London, ON) who scored her first career OUA goal with just over seven minutes remaining in regulation to put the Gryphs up 4-1. The Rams would add one late but the outcome was never in doubt.
Rookie goalie Aurore Beaulieu was given just her third start of the season and turned away 25 of the 27 shots sent her way, including 15 saves in a busy third period. For Beaulieu, it was her third win of the season and second against the Rams. The Gryphons remain undefeated at the Gryphon Centre as they move to 8-0 on home ice this season. The Gryphons will now face UOIT in a home-and-home as their next game will be this Saturday in Oshawa before returning home the following Saturday on January 21 to host the Ridgebacks.
