GUELPH, ON - Wednesday night at the Gryphon Centre, Karli Shell scored in double overtime to lift the Gryphons to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Brock Badgers. With the win, the Gryphons improve to 2-0-1 (wins-losses-overtime losses) on the season. Brock falls to 1-1-1.
Goals were hard to come by on the night, with solid performances from both goaltenders. Gryphons netminder Val Lamenta made several big saves in the opening period as the Gryphons and Badgers were scoreless after the opening 20 minutes of play. In the second period, the Gryphons would open the scoring thanks to their promising rookie centre Sydney Davison. Davison, who scored two goals this past Saturday in Guelph's win over Laurentian, would pot her team-leading third of the season after finishing off a nice feed from linemate Claire Merrick. The Gryphon lead would not last long as Brock would answer later in the period. Badgers forward Annie Berg, who also has experience on Team Canada's U18 squad, would tie the game at 1-1 with a power play goal with five minutes remaining in the 2nd. The Gryphons and Badgers would head to the final period knotted at 1-1.
Late in the third period, the Gryphons had a glorious opportunity to score the game-winner. On a 2-on-0 break, forward Kaitlin Lowy would be denied by Brock goalie Jensen Murphy, who made 29 saves on the night. 60 minutes solved nothing. The Gryphons and Badgers were off to a five minute, 4-on-4 overtime.
In the first OT period, the Badgers appeared to score the OT winner after jamming home a rebound. But the goal was immediately waved off by the referee who had clearly blown the whistle prior the goal. The Brock players, who had emptied the bench to celebrate their would-be OT victory, made their way back to the bench. And the next bench-clearing celebration would belong to the Gryphons.
