Calgary, Alta. — There are bad starts, and then there are what Team CIS experienced on Thursday night in Calgary.
Five goals on 11 shots — none of which were expressly goaltender Valerie Lamenta's fault — for Canada White (2-1-0) put the game away before the first intermission, and the national development team cruised from there to a 9-3 victory over Team CIS (0-2-1).
Jess Healey opened the scoring for Canada White just 2:29 into Thursday's contest, fluttering a short-handed wrist shot through traffic and past a heavily-screened Lamenta.
Wisconsin forward Emily Clark nabbed her second goal of the tournament four minutes later, tapping a Ryleigh Houston feed past Lamenta.
Kristyn Capizzano made it 3-0 for the development squad at the 10:09 mark, when she poked her own rebound underneath Lamenta.
Goals from Eve-Audrey Picard and Stephanie Sucharda pushed the Canada White lead to five at the first intermission.
Canada White forward Rebecca Leslie added a sixth just 56 seconds into the second period, chasing Lamenta from the net in the process.
Team CIS seemed to wake up after the goalie switch, and Alberta's Alex Poznikoff (Edmonton, Alta.) — likely the team's best player on the night — showed off some nifty moves at the 3:35 mark to break Canada White goaltender Julia Vandyk's shutout bid.
St. Thomas captain Kelty Apperson added a second goal roughly four minutes after Poznikoff's, and it appeared Team CIS might have some fight in it, trailing 6-2.
Rhyen McGill killed any kind of momentum with a seventh goal for Canada White at 10:37.
Goals from Canada White's Victoria Bach and McGill — again — sandwiched Taylor Day's goal for Team CIS in the third period.
Rachel Flanagan's CIS squad will close out its National Women's Development Tournament schedule on Saturday with a winnable game against Team Sweden (1-1-1).
