Fifth-year forward Taylor Day tallied three points in leading the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over the Windsor Lancers on Wednesday, January 4 at South Windsor Arena.
With the win, the Blues improve to 6-1-5-0 (W-OTW-L-OTL) and move into a tie for fifth place with the Western Mustangs in the highly competitive OUA standings.
After OUA leading scorer Krystin Lawrence opened the scoring for the Lancers just 3:44 into the game, Blues team captain Kristi Riseley answered the call, coming out of the penalty box and finding the back of the net 10 minutes later. The two teams were deadlocked at 1-1 after 20 minutes.
First-year defenceman Shaelynn Waite put the Blues ahead, sending a point shot through traffic midway through the second period for her first career goal. The Lancers responded though as Jillian Rops scored a powerplay marker with just 45 seconds remaining in the period to leave the game tied at 2-2 after 40 minutes.
Day then notched what would be the game-winner 4:50 into the third period, receiving a pass from linemate Meagan O'Brien and beating Windsor netminder Morgan Farrow. Minutes later, Lancers forward Natalie Barrette looked to have the equalizer, but her shot wrung off the cross bar to maintain the Blues one-goal lead.
Fourth-year goalie Katey Teekasingh posted 24 saves and earned the win in her first start of the season.
The Varsity Blues return to action this Sunday, January 8 as they travel to London, Ont., to take on the Western Mustangs. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
