Ridgebacks wrap up first half with win over visiting Voyageurs
OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT women's hockey team have finished the 2016 portion of their season with a 5-4-3 record and a sweep in their final weekend of conference play.
After a 4-3 overtime victory on Saturday at Ryerson, the Ridgebacks returned home to defeat the Laurentian Voyageurs by the same score.
Chelsea Ball (Maple, Ont.) scored a pair to finish the weekend with four points, including Sunday's game-winning goal.
Laurentian had the better start on Sunday at the Campus Ice Centre as Mariah Beckett scored her first OUA goal 11:39 into the first period. It wasn't pretty, but after being pulled down on a delayed penalty she slid into UOIT goalie Briar Hughes (Thornton, Ont.) with the puck under her, with the result being the opening goal of the game.
The next goal didn't come until Jessica Staats made it a two-goal game with the ice still wet – just 23 seconds into the second period.
Luckily for UOIT the Voyageurs had Emma Leger take a hooking penalty 5:04 into the second. The Ridgebacks capitalized to start building momentum as Natasha Tymcio (Caledon, Ont.) scored her first of the season on a slap shot from the point through the crowd in front of Laura Deller.
Just two minutes later, towards the end of another man advantage, Ball took the puck from centre ice and after beating a pair of Laurentian defencemen put the puck top shelf to tie the game 2-2 with 12:50 to go in the second.
The Ridgebacks maintained their momentum after killing off a penalty as Sam Forchielli (Hamilton, Ont.) beat the Laurentian defencemen, cut cross-crease and slide the puck under Deller to give UOIT their first lead of the game.
Neither team scored again until, with Laurentian's goalie pulled, Ball potted an empty-net goal.
MacAuley Carr threatened for Laurentian, scoring with 1:11 to go in the third, but the Ridgebacks held on for the regulation victory.
Hughes made 21 saves in the victory for UOIT, while Deller made 19 in the loss for Laurentian.
The next action for UOIT won't be until the new year when they travel north to take on Nipissing on Jan. 7 and Laurentian on Jan. 8.

Badgers end first half with win over Waterloo
OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT women's hockey team have finished the 2016 portion of their season with a 5-4-3 record and a sweep in their final weekend of conference play.
The Badgers opened the scoring 12 minutes into the first period with a goal from rookie Kiana Tobio (Toronto, ON) assisted by Isabella Triolo (Oakville, ON).
The Warriors struck first in the second period tying the game back up at 1.
Just a minute later, forward Christina Ieradi (Maple, ON) answered for the Badgers with a beautiful feed from Annie Berg (Beamsville, ON) to take a 2-1 lead. It was Ieradi's team leading eighth goal of the season.
The Badgers finished the game with a strong two goal third period.
Berg added her fifth goal of the season 7:23 into the period with assists going to Melissa Hurrell (Caledon, ON) and Brenna Murphy (Odessa, ON). An empty net goal from Berg, her sixth of the campaign, with two minutes remaining would put this game out of reach.
Goaltender, Jensen Murphy (Kingston, ON) records her sixth win of the season with an amazing 41 save performance.
The Badgers now have a big break but will return to action on January 7th as they take on the Laurier Golden Hawks on the road.

Mustangs end first half with loss to rival Lancers
LONDON, Ont. – After allowing only one goal in a double overtime victory over the Warriors the day prior, the Western Mustangs women's ice hockey team's defence didn't fare as well on Sunday afternoon against the Windsor Lancers, conceding eight goals in an 8-1 defeat at Thompson Arena.
Riding a three-game winning streak heading into today's game, the purple and white will end the first half of the season with a 7-7 record, good for fifth place in the OUA standings.
The Mustangs appeared to be on the right track to open the game, outshooting their opponents 5-1 early on, including four shots on the power play.
The Lancers quickly turned that around, however, as they ended the period with a 16-8 shot advantage and a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission. The two goals came within two minutes of each other late in the period.
Western continued to struggle in the second period as the Lancers kept outshooting them and added three goals to their lead, capped by veteran forward Erinn Noseworthy's second goal of the game and sixth in six games.
The first goal of the frame came while Windsor was on the power play, snapping a five-game streak in which the Mustangs hadn't allowed a power play goal.
Western eventually get on the board when Megan Taylor found the back of the net on the power play for her second goal of the season.
Goalkeeper Katie Jacobs, getting the start after earning the victory over the Warriors on Saturday, allowed three goals on 20 shots before being replaced by rookie Tareya Webster in the second frame.
Windsor's offence didn't stop producing goals in the third period, adding two more in the last seven minutes to solidify the victory.
Molly Jenkins earned the victory in net for the Lancers, allowing only one goal on 25 shots after allowing six goals in their season opener against the Mustangs.
Western heads into the break hoping to learn from this game and continue to build on their successes from the first half.
"There's definitely some games we can learn from," head coach Kelly Paton said about her team's first half of the season. "Any mistake that we make we can try to learn from it so moving forward we'll hope to move in the three-point direction."
The Mustangs will open the second half of the season on Saturday, January 7 at 4 p.m. when they welcome the Ryerson Rams to the Thompson Arena.
