NAPANEE – After being announced by Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) as the hosts of the 2017 CIS women's hockey championship Queen's Athletics & Recreation announced Tuesday a partnership with the Strathcona Paper Centre to host the national tournament in Napanee.
"We are thrilled to once again be in the national sport spotlight as hosts of the 2017 CIS Women's Hockey Championship and are looking forward to a great week of action on the ice come March," said Vice Provost and Dean of Student Affairs Ann Tierney who officially announced the partnership. "This event is especially important to us as it falls within our historic 175th anniversary year."
The national tournament will be hosted by Queen's University for the first time since women's hockey made its CIS debut in 1997-98.
"This is an exciting day for Queen's Athletics and our women's hockey program as we announce the home for our 2017 CIS national championship and begin the countdown to next March," said Executive Director of Athletics & Recreation Leslie Dal Cin. "University hockey holds special significance for Queen's, as a University we were amongst the first to have a women's university team and we have been involved in University competition since the origins of the sports. The Queen's Gaels have also been among the best OUA programs in recent years. While they are still looking for their first national banner, the Gaels were crowned conference champions twice over the past six seasons and merited a CIS bronze medal in 2011."
The tournament will see action commence in Napanee starting Thursday March 17 through to Sunday March 19, 2017. The Strathcona Paper Centre will also be the host of the annual Queen's Invitational tournament featuring four of the best teams in Canada in exhibition games along with select league games leading into the 2017 Championships.
