WATERLOO, Ont. - Lauren Nicholson (Dresden, Ont.) and Ailish Forfar (Sharon, Ont.) scored within 42 seconds of each other midway through the third period to break a 1-1 tie and lead the Ryerson Rams women's hockey team to a 3-1 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks Thursday night.
BOXSCORE
The Rams' second win in as many games boosts their record to 3-1-3-2 this season and the three points they picked up vaults them into a tie for sixth place in the OUA with the Windsor Lancers. Meanwhile, the loss drops the Golden Hawks to 0-1-6-1 and keeps them in the basement of the standings.
Following a scoreless first period where Rams' starting goaltender Sydney Authier (Wallaceburg, Ont.) and Laurier's Lauren Webber combined for 19 saves, Dollee Meigs opened the scoring for the Golden Hawks 3:40 into the second. It was the fifth straight game that Ryerson surrendered the opening goal, but the Rams were able to respond quickly.
Blair Malthaner (Toronto) found the back of the net four minutes later to knot things back up. The fourth-year's goal continues her recent hot streak. She scored twice and added an assist in a 4-3 win over the Queen's Gaels in Kingston on Saturday.
Tied after forty minutes, Nicholson and Forfar put shots between the pipes in the middle of the third back-to-back to secure the victory for Ryerson.
Authier stopped 15 of the 16 shots while Webber made 26 saves at the other end of the ice.
With no games on the schedule this weekend, the Rams won't get the opportunity to extend their winning streak to three until they host the York Lions at the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Thursday, November 24th. In their previous meeting this season, the Lions came away with a 3-2 shootout victory on home ice. Puck drop on Mattamy Home Ice is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
NOTES: Kryshanda Green (Brampton, Ont.) picked up assists on Malthaner's goal and Forfar's tally to bump her point total to 13 (seven goals and six assists). She now sits tied atop the league in scoring with Guelph's Kelly Gribbons… Captain Stephanie Chiste (Schomberg, Ont.), Rachel Dowdall (Courtice, Ont.) and Nicholson also picked up assists in the win… Ryerson's defensive prowess came through in this one. After getting nine shots on net in the first twenty minutes, Laurier was only able to muster seven more the rest of the way.
