Bailie shuts door on No.8 Carleton with 39 save shutout
KINGSTON, Ont. (January 29, 2016) - The No.8 CIS ranked Carleton Ravens (18-6-0) visited the Queen's Gaels (14-6-1) on Friday, but could not solve the red hot Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.).
Bailie headed into the game with 11 wins under his belt, while the Ravens goalies Patrick Killeen and Francis Dupuis each have started in 12 games a piece. The two also sit second and third in GAA in the OUA, behind Bailie who holds top spot with a 1.94 GAA.
Game Flow
With 101 goals on the season, it was a tough task for the Gaels to hold off the high-powered Ravens offence. They did just that as they were on the board first in the opening frame. Braden Mercier (Lute Mountain, N.B.) scored to give the home team the always-important first goal of the game. They held the slim margin into the second thanks to a 13 save first period performance from Bailie.
They'd waste no time in the second either, as Andrew Wiebe (Thunder Bay, Ont.) netted his fourth of the year to put Queen's up 2-0. The goal came exactly one minute into the middle frame, and from there Kevin Bailie and the Gaels defence stepped up keeping the game at bay.
The solid defence and discipline extended into the third period as well. It was a game of discipline as each team only took one minor penalty in the 60 minutes of play. The Gaels held down the fort the rest of the way, keeping 13 more Ravens shots out of the net, hanging on and taking the upset win 2-0.
By the Numbers
3 - Shutouts on the year for Kevin Bailie
619 - Saves on the season for Bailie
4 - Bailie also sits 4th in the OUA in wins with 12
17 - Assists on the year for Spencer Abraham (Campleville, Ont.), tallying it on the Mercier goal
29 - Points on the season for Queen's, just three behind UOIT in the standings
Up Next
The Gaels will immediately hit the road for a game in Montreal on Saturday. They'll face off against the No.6 CIS ranked McGill Redmen.

Ridgebacks' inaugural school day game a big success
OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT men's hockey team earned a 4-2 victory over the RMC Paladins in their inaugural school day game played in front of a capacity crowd at the Campus Ice Centre Friday afternoon.
Students from across the Durham Region packed the Campus Ice Centre to watch the Ridgebacks' earn their program high 15th victory of the season.
With UOIT goaltender Brendan O'Neill (Ilderton, Ont.) getting the day off after a 44-save performance vs. Carleton on Thursday night, Ben Csiernik (Hamilton, Ont.) would get the start. After allowing two first period goals, the Kinesiology major settled down and stopped all 21 shots he faced over the final forty minutes to earn his first career OUA victory.
Tied 2-2 in the second period, Connor Jarvis (Port Union, Ont.) would break the deadlock scoring at 14:42. Jarvis would walk out from the corner and snap one over the blocker of Matt Murphy for his eighth of the season.
Less than two minutes later, Jesse Stoughton (Bobcaygeon, Ont.) would cause a turnover behind the net and put home a wraparound to score his third shorthanded goal of the season, giving the Ridgebacks some insurance.
RMC would end up outshooting UOIT 16-9 in the third period but neither team would find the back of the net with Jarvis' goal proving to be the game winner.
James Woodcroft (Milton, Ont.) opened up scoring for UOIT in the first period as he scored his third goal in as many games while Cam Yuill (Wellington, Ont.) netted the other.
Jarvis and Yuill both finished the night with a goal and an assist.
Bennett Huber and David Savery were the first period goal scorers for the Paladins.
With three points this week, UOIT (15-7-2) has locked up at least the fifth seed in the OUA eastern conference. The Ridgebacks currently hold a five-point lead over Queen's (13-6-1) for fourth place, but the Gaels have four games in hand.
The Ridgebacks will have a much-deserved weekend off as they rest up for back-to-back games in Waterloo against Laurier (Thursday) and Waterloo (Friday) next week.
