Lakers dominate but fall to rival Voyageurs
If there was ever a game where you would say the Nipissing Lakers men's hockey team deserved better, it was Saturday night.
The Lakers dominated the visiting Laurentian Voyageurs on the ice, on the shot-clock, in chances, in overall play, but couldn't solve the goaltending of Alain Valiquette, as he made 47 saves helping the Voyageurs escape with a 4-2 over the Lakers.
Nipissing opened the scoring just past the midway point of the first period when Brock Morrison scored on the power play to put the Lakers up 1-0.
Laurentian tied the game with 0.6 seconds left in the period on a harmless shot that eluded Lakers goalie Domenic Graham and sent the teams to the dressing room tied 1-1.
Nipissing once again grabbed a one goal lead when they scored early in the second period.
Joel Herbert, who assisted on the Lakers first goal, gave Nipissing a 2-1 lead as they took control of the game.
In the second period alone, Nipissing fired 23 shots at the Laurentian net.
After chances at both ends, the Lakers had a great opportunity to go ahead for a third time late in the final period, but once again, Valiquette stood tall and kept the Vees in the game.
After a big stop, Laurentian turned the puck up ice and scored what would be the game-winner with five minutes left in the period.
They would add an empty-netter to seal the win and grab a key two points.
The final shots were 49-23 in favour of the Lakers.
Nipissing, who deserved the win, will regroup this week before finishing off the first half of play with a road trip to take on the Carleton Ravens and Concordia Stingers next weekend.

Lions back in the win column with victory over Stingers
With a 4-3 victory over the Concordia Stingers on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 28) at the Ed Meagher Arena in Montreal, the No. 8 nationally-ranked York University Lions men's hockey team recorded its ninth win of the regular season.
With the victory, the Lions improved to 9-3-3 on the year and have already equalled their win total from all of last season, with 12 games still remaining on the schedule.
In the opening minutes of the contests, both teams were quick to grab a goal. York's Colton Vannucci (High River, Alta.) was first to open the scoring at 2:12 off of assists from Greg Milner (Watford, Ont.) and Mitch VanTeeling (Brandon, Man.).
Soon after, Concordia's Olivier Hinse found an equalizer at 4:06 after the puck was shared between Jessyko Bernard and Curtis Gass, and later at 17:38 Hinse capitalized again off of an opportunity in front of net that was set up by Bernard and Scott Oke.
Hinses' two goals in the first period added to his nine-goal total this season and gave his team the 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
In the second period however, the Lions were able to get themselves back into the game.
Tyler Mort (Keswick, Ont.) claimed his third goal of the season and tied up the score after pouncing off of a short handed chance at 5:32. The assists were credited to Derek Sheppard (Ajax, Ont.) and Kyle Campbell (Halifax).
Then nearing the end of the period, at 13:18, Milner edged out a Lions' lead from a power play advantage. After the puck was passed between Vannucci and Justin Larson (Buckhorn, Ont.), Milner hit the puck home for his seventh goal of the season.
In the third period, the Lions extended their lead to 4-2 after VanTeeling was able to find Vannucci in a promising position on the ice for a goal at 8:38. It was Vannucci's fourth goal of the season.
At 19:43 Hinse squeezed out a goal to record the hat trick and narrow the score to 4-3. Matt Boudreau and Luca Ciampini assisted him, but their efforts couldn't stop the Lions from pulling away with the win.
In the upcoming week the Lions will return home and prepare for a game that will be played against the Laurier Golden Hawks at Canlan Ice Sports Arena. Puck drop will be at 7pm on Friday (Dec. 4) in their second last home contest of the fall season.

Wolves lose double OT heartbreaker
The Lakehead Thunderwolves lost 6-5 in double overtime to the Toronto Varsity Blues before a crowd of 2046 at the Fort William Gardens on Saturday night.
The final result marred a spirted comeback effort by the Wolves that just slipped away in the end.
Toronto jumped on the Wolves early and often in the first period, beginning with a Christian Finch marker 1:31 into the game. Then at 6:37, Lakehead goalie Jeff Bosch injured a hamstring when Dean Klomp beat him from in-close, and Bosch had to be replaced in the Wolves' net by Justin McDonald.
Patrick Marsh added two more goals late in the period to put Toronto up 4-0 after 20 minutes of play.
Billy Jenkins gave Lakehead a flicker of hope with a power play goal 5:40 into the second, and the Wolves began to take the pace of play to the Blues. Garick Gray scored at 17:49 of the middle stanza to cut the gap to 4-2 and make things interesting heading into the third.
Kelin Ainsworth shoveled a backhander past Toronto netminder Brett Willows at the 11-minute mark bring the Wolves to within one, and then at 14:01 Matt Alexander completed the comeback to deadlock the game at 4-4. At this point there was a serious buzz in the Gardens.
That buzz turned into bedlam when Jenkins got his second of the night to give Lakehead a 5-4 lead at 15:23, and it appeared as though the miracle comeback might stand. But Marsh beat McDonald low on the glove side with 1:33 remaining in regulation to complete his hat-trick and send the game into overtime for the second night in a row.
The Thunderwolves continued to dominate puck possession through the scoreless first overtime period and even more so in the second O.T., where Cody Alcock narrowly missed several good scoring chances and Jake Wright was stoned by Willows.
It looked like it was just a matter of time before the Wolves would break through - until it didn't. With 1:05 left in the second O.T., Charlie Connell fired a rocket over McDonald's shoulder on the short side, giving the Blues the win.
Total shots on goal in the game were 48-31 for Lakehead.
The Molson Three Stars of the game were:
1. Billy Jenkins, Lakehead
2. Kelin Ainsworth, Lakehead
3. Patrick Marsh, Toronto
The Wolves will hit the road next weekend to take on Brock and York in their last games before the Christmas exam break.

Like Mike: Morrison unbeatable in Warriors win
If the Ryerson Rams never face Mike Morrison (Hamilton) again, they'll be happy.
Morrison put together his best performance of the season, as he stopped all 50 shots he faced, leading the Waterloo Warriors to a 3-0 victory over Ryerson on Saturday night at the Columbia Icefield arena.
Colin Behenna (Waterloo), Matt Amadio (Sault Ste. Marie), and Riley Sonnenburg (Cambridge) scored for the Warriors, who won their third straight game. Troy Passingham turned away 22 shots in the loss for Ryerson.
For Morrison, it was his second career CIS shutout, but it looked a lot like his first. On January 24, 2014, Morrison turned aside 48 Rams shots, securing the home victory by the same 3-0 score line.
On this night, the Warriors scored once in each period en route to victory. First, Behenna opened up the scoring when he converted on a Mike Moffat (Waterloo) feed on the man advantage to make it 1-0. Then in the second, Cam Wind (Barrie) sprung Amadio on a breakaway, and he converted to make it 2-0. And finally, Sonnenburg scored into an empty net late in the third after a key defensive zone faceoff win by Andrew Smith (Kitchener).
The Warriors also delivered a victory on Alumni Weekend, as the club celebrated the 20th anniversary of the 1995-96 Queen's Cup Championship team in a pregame ceremony. After raising their OUA West championship banner, Warriors Hall-of-Famer John Wynne saw his All-Canadian banner raised to the rafters as well. Wynne, a Calgary native, is 6th all-time in Warriors scoring with 140 points, and he was named CIAU National Player of the Year in 1995-96.
The Warriors will now look to end the first half of their schedule with their fourth straight win, as they wrap up 2015 with a home game against the Western Mustangs on Friday, December 4.

D'Agostini records another shutout, Amestoy scores twice as Gryphons win 3-0 over RMC
Kingston, ON – Saturday night in Kingston the Gryphons Men's Hockey team won 3-0 over the RMC Paladins. With the win, the Gryphons improve to 9-6-0 on the season while RMC falls to 1-13-3.
The red hot Gryphons did what they needed to do Saturday night, scoring one goal in each of the three periods en route to their second straight shutout victory. Guelph had won 2-0 over Carleton on Friday (Nov. 27). Second year goalie Andrew D'Agostini was in goal for both of those shutouts, and on Saturday night turned away all 43 shots sent his way. In two nights, D'Agostini made a combined 76 saves and helped the Gryphons improve to 8-2 in their last 10 games overall.
Carlos Amestoy led the Gryphons in scoring on Saturday night, factoring into all three goals by assisting the game's opening goal and then scoring the final two goals of the game. Stephen Hiff was the other Gryphon to record a multi-point night as he assisted on both of Amestoy's goals.
The Gryphons will play one more game before breaking for exams and Christmas. They will be in action again on Thursday, December 3 when they host the Laurier Golden Hawks (6-8-0).

Ravens outgun Mustangs in heavyweight OUA hockey tilt
(OTTAWA, ON) — The Carleton men's hockey team managed to notch four goals on the OUA West's best on Saturday night at the Ice House, as the Ravens (10-4-0) claimed both points against the under-manned Western Mustangs (10-5-0) with a 4-3 win.
"We had lots of chances — their goalie made a lot of good saves — but we have to find ways to get pucks in the back of the net," said Ravens head coach Marty Johnston, whose team had three more skaters in the lineup than Western. "I'm glad the guys won, they deserved it with their effort, but it was pretty tight."
Carleton opened the scoring through Michael McNamee (Perth, ON), who finished off a slick feed from Ryan Van Stralen (Prescott, ON) past UWO goaltender Peter Delmas at 7:41 of the first period.
The Ravens squandered multiple chances throughout the rest of the first period, and were made to pay by Western early in period two, as Trevor Warnaar drew the Mustangs level just 81 seconds into the middle frame.
McNamee restored the Carleton lead just 35 seconds later, one-timing a juicy rebound past Delmas to pull the Ravens back on top, 2-1.
Defenceman David Weckworth (Kanata, ON) then doubled the CU lead midway through the second period, rifling a wrist shot past Delmas glove-side.
Late-second goals from the Mustangs' Connor Chartier and McNamee left the score at 4-2 after forty minutes, with the latter completing McNamee's hat-trick.
Chartier's second of the night early in the final period brought the visitors to within a goal, but Carleton would hang on — thanks in large part to some timely saves from Francis Dupuis (Ottawa, ON) — through a nervous third period for the win.
"At the start of the week we knew this was going to be a real tough weekend, with two well-coached teams coming in, but hopefully we can build on today's win and bring that into our last weekend," said Coach Johnston.
Saturday's win saw McNamee, a third-year assistant captain, snipe his first career CIS hat-trick.
"Lots of pucks on my stick (tonight), lots of open net, and if you miss those you get mad at yourself," said McNamee, who has exploded for 13 points in seven games during the month of November. "Our third period was a bit shaky, but a win's a win and you take points when you get them and just try to move forward on the positives."

KINGSTON, Ont. (November 28, 2015) - The Queen's Gaels (8-4-0) lost a heartbreaker to the No.2 McGill Redmen (14-2-0) 3-2 at the 2nd annual PUCK CANCER game in honour of Queen's student Carley Allison who passed away in March. GAME FLOW
The Gaels were looking to avenge their 2014-15 playoff defeat in the East semifinal of last season against McGill and snap a 29 game winless streak against McGill that dates back to 2004. The Gaels got off to a quick start in the first testing McGill netminder Jacob Gervais-Chouinard early but could not get anything by the OUA wins leader. From there Queen's found themselves in penalty trouble as McGill had two five on four advantages and one five on three opportunity in the opening 20 minutes. The Gaels, led by goaltender Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) were able to stave off the number two power play in the league of McGill and skated to a 0-0 tie after the first period.
In the second the game opened up and this time it was the power play units that went to work. First to strike was McGill, Patrick Delisle-Houde picked up his fourth marker of the game beating Bailie at the 15:46 mark of the second to open the scoring and give the Redmen a 1-0 lead.
Late in the period McGill found themselves in penalty trouble and the Gaels were up five on three in the final seconds of the frame. A cross crease pass from Slater Doggett (Oakville, Ont.) to Eric Ming (Williamstown, Ont.) found it's way past Gervais-Chouinard to the back of the net with just 15 second remaining the in the period to tie the game at 1-1.
In the third penalties continued to slow down McGill as the Gaels were able to get the go-ahead goal on the power play at the 10:06 mark. Once again it was Ming, he was able to push the puck past a Redmen defender and skate by him into open space. From there, Ming fired a shot up over the shoulder of Gervais-Chouinard and into the net giving Queen's a 2-1 lead late in the game.
The lead was short lived however as McGill responded with a power play tally of their own. A pass from the corner found its way out in front to Rose who chipped the puck past Bailie on his glove side tying the game at 2-2 with less than five minutes in the game.
With just 50 seconds left in a game that looked like it was headed to overtime it was Rose who proved to be the difference maker for McGill. Rose broke down the right wing and got a good bounce off the feet of a Gael defencemen right onto his stick in the slot. He made no mistake firing a shot past Bailie to secure the win for McGill.
Bailie stopped 29 of the 32 shots he faced while Gervais-Chouinard turned aside 31 for his OUA leading 14th win on the season.
BY THE NUMBERS
2 - Ranking in the nation for McGill
4 - Powerplay goals in the game including two from Eric Ming
