KINGSTON, Ont. (January 19, 2016) - The Gaels men's hockey team (11-6-1) fell short of a third period comeback in a 3-2 loss to the No.9 Carleton Ravens (15-5-0) on Tuesday night at the Memorial Centre.
GAME FLOW
The Ravens jumped ahead at the 7:22 mark of the first period when Mike McNamee capitalized on a Gaels giveaway in their own end, burying a pass from teammate Mitch Zion. Carleton put the Gaels down 2-0 heading into the first intermission on a powerplay marker from Ryan Van Stralen, who finished a slick passing play in the slot.
A scoreless second period was not without action, as a rebound bounced straight to Andrew Wiebe (Thunder Bay, Ont.) early in the frame, but the Gaels forward missed the top corner on Queen's best scoring chance. Gaels goaltender Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) kept it close through 40 minutes, stopping 14 shots in the middle stanza, highlighted by a sprawling save midway through the frame. Queen's escaped the second down just two, when Carleton's Alexandre Boivin's shot hit the post and bounced to safety in the final minute of the period.
The pace picked up after Zion put the Ravens up 3-0 early in the third on a cross-ice pass from Sean Bamford. With CIS leader in penalty minutes Jeremie Fraser in the box, Spencer Abraham's (Campbellville, Ont.) point shot made it through a crowd in front to beat Patrick Killeen for a powerplay goal.
Down 3-1 with nine minutes to play, the Gaels redoubled their effort, sending 15 of their 32 shots on net in the final frame. During one chaotic Queen's possession, Ryan Bloom (Calgary, Alta.) banged home the Gaels second goal of the game from Slater Doggett (Oakville, Ont.) and Eric Ming (Williamstown, Ont.) to narrow the deficit to just one with 2:19 on the clock. Despite pulling Bailie with two minutes remaining for the extra attacker, Queen's was unable to find the equalizer, and Carleton walked away with the 3-2 victory.
Bailie made 38 saves as he recorded his sixth loss of the campaign, while his Carleton counterpart Killeen picked up the win with a 30 save performance.
