The Lancer men's hockey team opened the 2015-16 with a strong 5-1 win over the visiting Guelph Gryphons on Wednesday night at South Windsor Arena.
Despite being out-shot by the Gryphons 13-8 in the first period, the Lancers held a 1-0 lead after Scott Prier first a shot from the point to beat Guelph goalie Andrew D'Agostini.
With the score still 1-0 heading into the third period, Windsor jumped to a quick 3-0 lead with a pair of goals from Kyle Hope just 59 seconds apart. However, just 14 seconds after Hope's second goal, the Gryphons got one back on the power play. Gryphons' captain Nick Trecapelli's point shot was re-directed into the Lancer net by Scott Simmonds with 14:55 left on the clock.
The Lancer would restore their three goal lead with a power play marker of their own from Ryan Green, and right before the final buzzer sounded, Eric Noel scored his first of the season to secure the 5-1 victory.
First year Lancer Blake Richard made 32 saves in net for the Lancer to earn his first OUA regular season victory.
The Lancers will now host the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday at 7:30pm at South Windsor Arena.
