Blues can't tame Lions
The Blues and Lions now have identical 2-5 records heading into the final week of the regular season.
Simon Nassar (Toronto) and Richard Quittenton (Ajax, Ont.) once again split quarterback duties for the Blues. Nassar was 10-for-18 and 142 yards, while Quittenton was 6-for-13 for 113 yards.
Fourth-year Blues receiver Paul de Pass (Ajax, Ont.) led all players with 167 receiving yards and one touchdown, while rookie running back Ashton Nelson (Brampton, Ont.) had a team-high 79 rushing yards and one major in the loss.
James Bodanis (Toronto) and Abbey Olusoga (Pickering, Ont.) led the Blues with seven tackles and one sack apiece.
The Lions opened the scoring on the first drive of the game as fifth-year running back Kyle Exume (Whitby, Ont.) capped off a seven-play, 52-yard drive with a 13-yard run into the end zone.
The Blues added a field goal, safety and rouge as the visiting Lions held a narrow 7-6 lead after the first quarter.
Exume scored his second touchdown of the day on a seven-yard rushing major. York continued to press on the ensuing drive, as sophomore defensive back Belah Small (Toronto) picked off a Quittenton pass and returned it 47 yards for the touchdown, giving the Lions a 21-6 lead midway through the frame.
With less than one minute remaining in the half, York QB Myles Gibbon (Montreal) finished a long drive with a three-yard passing TD to Nathaniel Griffith (Brampton, Ont.). Blues veteran kicker Andrew Lomasney added his second field goal of the game on the last play and the Lions held a 30-9 lead at halftime.
The Blues put up the only points of the third quarter as Quittenton rushed one yard for a major. The Lions led 30-16 heading into the fourth quarter.
Nelson helped the home team narrow the gap even further, capping off a five-play, 40-yard drive with a nine-yard rushing TD; however, Exume punched in his third of the game with just over a minute remaining to secure the 36-24 victory.
Gibbon was 12-of-28 for 215 yards and one TD, while also rushing 15 times for a game-high 135 yards. Exume ended the day with 24 carries for 132 yards and three majors and one sack.
Jordan Nugent of Brampton, Ont., led the Lions with six tackles and one interception in the win.
