Team effort powers Marauders over Warriors
The No. 1 Marauders put up an astounding 599 total offensive yards compared to Waterloo’s 238 with starting quarterback Kyle Quinlan (South Woodslee, Ont.) earning 242 passing yards and back up Marshall Ferguson (Kingston, Ont.) contributing 129 of his own.
For Waterloo rookie quarterback Jamie Cook (Collingwood, Ont.) looked impressive on his 22 passes, completing 14 of them for 130 yards. On the ground Cook also collected 78 yards, including a 51 yard run in the late going of the contest.
Third year running back Jimmy Hill (Hamilton, Ont.) rushed his way to a game high 125 yards on 15 carries and trotted home the first touchdown of the game for McMaster.
In the early going, the Warriors gave the 4,250 in attendance something to cheer about with a trickery play called by Waterloo head coach Joe Paopao. Starting quarterback Brian Chris (Waterloo, Ont.) tossed a lateral pass to receiver Nick Anapolsky (Guelph, Ont.) who found a wide open Paul Cecile (Azilda, Ont.) for the first major of the game.
Several minutes later McMaster leveled the game at 7-7 with a two yard run, taking advantage of a Waterloo fumble late in the opening quarter.
Tied at seven into the second quarter, McMaster’s offense woke up, while taking advantage of the wind at their back. Following a conceded Warrior safety, Quinlan would call his own number and strike with the quarterback sneak to give his squad a 16-7 lead.
On the next Warrior possession, linebacker Nick Shorthill (Nobleton, Ont.) would pick off an errand Chris pass and take it back 30 yards for McMaster’s third straight touchdown to lead 23-7.
With the second quarter winding down McMaster would notch three more touchdown’s to take a commanding 44-7 lead into half. A pair of Kitchener natives, Tyler Loveday and Dahlin Brooks provided back-to-back touchdown’s both in the air from perfect passes by Quinlan. Running back Kasean Davis (Mississauga, Ont.) completed the 36-point second quarter by the Marauders with a 45-yard run.
Waterloo showed their fight in the early going of the third quarter with Cook showing off his bright future with the Warriors charging the home side up field. Second year running back Ryan Di Risio (Burlington, Ont.) capped off the drive with a one yard run cutting the McMaster lead to 44-14.
The two combatants would exchange touchdowns in the third quarter with Bradley Fochesato (Windsor, Ont.) collecting a three yard pass while Anapolsky brought in an 18 yard strike by Cook making the score 54-21 for the visiting side.
McMaster would add two more touchdowns, one late in the third quarter and another early on in the fourth to earn the 68-21 victory.
The top ranked McMaster Marauders (2-0) turn their attention to the winless Ottawa Gee Gees (0-2) next Saturday on the road while the Warriors (0-2) play their first road game of the season at Guelph (0-1). Both games kickoff at 1 p.m.
