Yates Cup rematch live on theScore
"We learned from the Yates Cup loss, but it’s a new year and new season so we need to get a win against McMaster for the 2012 team,” said Mustangs bench-boss Greg Marshall. “The 13th man certainly helps. It can make it difficult if you’re a visiting team trying to communicate. Hopefully our fans will be loud, we’d love to be able to celebrate a win with homecoming crowd.”
The McMaster Marauders enter the game as the only undefeated team in the conference and the No. 1 team in the country. Coming off the first Vanier Cup win in school history, the Marauders are doing everything in their power to reach the promised land once again. McMaster ranks first in the OUA in scoring offence (49.0 ppg), total offence (622 ypg), and total defense (313 ypg).
McMaster’s offence is bolstered by fifth-year quarterback Kyle Quinlan (South Woodslee, Ont.), running back Kasean Davis-Reynolds (Mississauga, Ont.), a number of talented receivers and a veteran offensive line. Quinlan, the MVP of the 2011 Yates Cup, Uteck Bowl and Vanier Cup, has already thrown for 1,227 yards this season, good for second in the OUA. His 10 touchdowns this season and 74 percent completion rate are both tops in the league. Showing his diversity, Quinlan has also rushed for 268 yards and four touchdowns on 31 carries.
“Kyle has been as good as we could possibly hope,” said Marauders head coach Stefan Ptasek of his fifth-year signal-caller. “ He’s completing over 70 percent of his passes and has over 100 passes without an interception. His go-to guy (Micheal) DiCroce hasn’t played yet this year and he’s adapted nicely to the personnel around him. Kyle has been pushing himself to lead this team. He’s a driven kid and that’s something any coach wants.”
Defensive lineman Ben D’Aguilar and linebacker Aram Eisho, both Hamilton natives, are back to anchor a defence that returned eight starters from the 2011 championship squad. Through four games D’Aguilar leads the OUA with 6.5 sacks, while Eisho’s 28 tackles are good enough for fourth in the league. The Maruaders’ veteran defensive backfield is also playing ball-hawks once again, racking up 10 interceptions collectively through four games.
The Western Mustangs are primed to make their second University Rush on theScore appearance of the season, after falling 18-11 to the Queen’s Gaels on the road two weeks ago. The Mustangs are currently 3-1 and head into Saturday’s homecoming match-up coming off an impressive 46-23 win over the Windsor Lancers (2-2).
The Mustangs offence leads the nation in rushing, averaging 298.8 yards per game. The Western ground game is a three-headed monster, led by running backs Garret Sanvido (Vancouver, B.C.) and Yannick Harou (Gatineau, Que.), plus quarterback Donnie Marshall (London, Ont.). The trio have 1,034 of the Mustangs 1,195 yards on the ground this season. Sanvido is tied for the OUA and CIS lead with seven rushing touchdowns, while Harou has three and Marshall one.
Marshall has also been active through the air this season, throwing for 800 yards and five touchdowns; including two each to his brother Brian Marshall (London, Ont.) and Justin Sanvido (Vancouver, B.C.). The Mustangs are scoring an average of 43.2 points per game, trailing only McMaster in points produced.
Western's defence is also formidable, allowing only 14.5 points and 329 yards per game; ranking them first and second in the OUA in each category respectively.
Ricky Osei-Kusi (Brampton, Ont.) has proved to be the leader for Western. The second-year lineman leads the team in tackles with 16.5 and sacks with 3.5. Six-foot-five, 270-pound defensive tackle Darryl Waud (Hamilton, Ont.) also has 3.5 sacks to share the team lead.
This game shapes up to be an interesting one in the OUA standings. With a loss, Western would have two regular season losses for the first time since 2009 and would potentially be looking at playing a quarter-final playoff game rather than a bye to the semifinals like they have had the past two seasons. A Western win would bring McMaster back into the pack, and potentially create a log-jam of teams at 4-1 heading into the final three weeks of the regular season.
The TD Waterhouse stadium stands will be filled to capacity Saturday, with over 8,000 homecoming revelers clad in purple on hand to witness one of the most anticipated match-ups of the 2012 OUA football season, but for those without a ticket the game can be seen live on University Rush on theScore, presented by Wilson, beginning at 1 p.m.
