September CFL Scouting Bureau
The CFL’s Scouting Bureau published its initial Top 15 list of the season on Wednesday. Charles heads a group of eight CIS players to make the cut, including four of the top five prospects.
Charles, a 6-foot-5, 310-pound junior, was named a first-team CIS all-Canadian in his second campaign with the Rams a year ago, when he tallied 27.5 tackles and 4.5 sacks in eight conference games. This season, the native of Oshawa, Ont., recorded six tackles, including five solo and two sacks, in Regina’s first two contests before missing last Friday’s game against Alberta due to injury.
“Stefan is a physical presence on the field who demands a double team,” said Rams head coach Frank McCrystal. “A player with his size, skill set, and knowledge of the game will be attractive for both CFL and NFL teams.”
Other CIS standouts included on the Scouting Bureau’s September list are Calgary defensive lineman Linden Gaydosh at No. 2, McMaster offensive tackle Matt Sewell at No. 4, Calgary running back Steven Lumbala at No. 5, Regina offensive lineman Brett Jones at No. 9, McMaster defensive end Ben D’Aguilar at No. 10, Bishop’s defensive lineman Elie Ngoyi at No. 12, and Laval wide receiver Yannick Morin-Plante at No. 15.
Gaydosh, Sewell, Lumbala and Jones joined Charles as all-Canadians in 2011, when Sewell and D’Aguilar helped McMaster capture the Vanier Cup for the first time in team history.
“There’s no question that when we’re recruiting young men, we showcase our ability to get our athletes to the next level,” said Calgary head coach Blake Nill, whose Dinos’ had the most players selected among CIS teams in each of the last two CFL drafts, including six in 2011 and four in 2012. “But what this indicates more than anything is that while we have been able to bring high-quality athletes in, our coaches are doing a tremendous job in the development stage of these players’ football careers.”
Last year, University of Saskatchewan offensive lineman Ben Heenan topped the first two Scouting Bureau lists before dropping to second place in the third and final rankings. In May, he became the sixth CIS player in as many years – and the 10th in the past 13 years - to be selected first overall in the CFL Draft when the Saskatchewan Roughriders called his name at No. 1.
