BLUES VOLLEYBALL VETS EARN GOLD ON THE BEACH
Fourth-year Varsity Blues volleyball players and OUA all-stars Asya Danilova and Mila Miguel came back from a first-set loss in their final match against Miriam Aboumerhi and Magalie St-Georges of the University of Montreal to win the 24U division (18-21, 21-11, 15-1).
Miguel attributed the turn-around to \"just playing point-by-point and not worrying about what the score was. Because with the wind, things can change so easily.\" The gusty day was less-than-ideal for volleyball.
University of Toronto recruit Vivian Chan earned a gold medal in the 18U category. Vivian will now represent Canada at the 19U world beach volleyball championships in Bermuda, September 5-10 before beginning her studies in physical and health education at U of T.
University of Toronto's second-year volleyball players Heather Bansley and Caley Venn lost a very tight match in the women's 20U final (16-21, 21-18, 16-14) against Liz Cordonier and Katie Tyzuk of UBC.
Other current University of Toronto volleyball athletes in action this weekend were second-year players Kristina Valjas and Michelle Wood, who finished fifth in the 20U division, losing their quarter-final match to their Varsity Blues team mates Heather Bansley and Caley Venn.
Recent graduates Melinda Lee and Melissa Clifford finished ninth in the 24U division by being eliminated in the round of 16 by Asya Danilova and Mila Miguel.
