NO.8 TORONTO SQUEEK BY THE GEE-GEES, WHILE WESTERN WINS 14TH IN A ROW
The No.8 Toronto Varsity Blues women’s volleyball team (16-1) narrowly defeated the Ottawa Gee-Gees (12-5) in a back and forth, nail biting five sets this past weekend (21-25, 25-17, 21-25, 27-25, 15-13). Toronto didn’t let the ball touch the ground as they had 116 digs on the night led by Michelle Wood (Toronto, Ontario) with 27. Toronto was led by fourth year veteran Anastasia Danilova (Toronto, Ontario) who had 30 points, 25 kills and 23 digs in the win. Rookie setter Dana Collins (Sudbury, Ontario) also contributed with 35 assists and 10 digs. The Gee-Gees were led again by fourth year stand out Christine Lamey (Kanata, Ontario) who had 22 points, 22 kills and 18 digs. With the loss Ottawa now sits in third place, two points behind York (13-5) with a game in hand heading into the final week of the regular season.
Western 3, Waterloo 1
The No.10 Western Mustangs women’s volleyball team (16-1), increased their winning streak to 14, with a 3-1 defeat over the Waterloo Warriors (11-7) this past Friday (23-25, 25-21, 21-25, 23-25). Despite Waterloo playing a great defensive game having 92 digs on the night, the powerful Western offense was too strong. The Mustangs were led by Julia Hall (Lindsay, Ontario) who had 14 points, 14 kills and 18 digs on the night, while first year setter Jenna Thompson (St. Mary’s, Ontario) had 29 assists. Waterloo’s Gaby Lesniak (Hamilton, Ontario) has 17 points, 14 kills and 12 digs in the loss.
