W-Soccer Roundup: Queen's and Ottawa draw, both remain undefeated
Sept. 8 RMC @ Carleton
The Carleton Ravens women’s soccer team opened up the home portion of the regular season on Sunday afternoon with a hard fought 2-1 victory over the visiting RMC Paladins.
The Ravens entered the game looking to get back in the win column after suffering a 1-0 setback to Queen’s last Wednesday.
Midfield Nicole Filipow (Edmonton, AB) led the way offensively for the Ravens with a pair of goals (11th, 32nd) to give Carleton their third win of the year.
“I capitalized on my scoring opportunities against RMC,” said Filipow. “That’s something we (Carleton) will have to do this season if we want to be successful.
The Paladins (0-4) remain winless this season after losses to Queen’s, Ottawa, Trent and now Carleton.
“I liked our first 45 minutes of play but I think that we made it a little difficult for ourselves in the second half,” said Alex McNutt, Ravens head coach.
Carleton was cruising along with a 2-0 lead with less than 15 minutes to play in the match until the Paladins got on the scoreboard in the 77th minute to cut into the Ravens lead 2-1.
There was an anxious moment in the game when Ravens goalkeeper Anna Morsky had to leave the contest with an injury.
The Saskatoon, Saskatchewan native started the second half for Carleton after taking over from Elizabeth MacDougall.
Carleton (3-1) will now prepare for a Wednesday night showdown with cross town rival, Ottawa Gee-Gees.
It will be their first matchup since Ottawa defeated Carleton 1-0 in last season’s OUA East semi-final.
“Wednesday night’s game against Ottawa is going to be a battle but I really like our chances and excited to see how he respond,” said McNutt.
Ottawa’s record is 3-0-1 for 10 points after four games while Carleton is nipping at their heels at 3-1-0 and 9 points.
The Ravens have a couple of days to prepare for their next game which is scheduled for Wednesday night September 11 against the Ottawa Gee-Gees. Game time at Matt Anthony Field is 7:00 p.m.Source: Carleton Sports Info

Guelph @ Waterloo
The Waterloo women's soccer team's string of bad luck continued on Sunday in a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to the Guelph Gryphons at Warrior Field. Forward Courtney Whiteside chipped in the game winning goal in injury time to hand Waterloo their fourth straight loss to open the season.
The opening half was all Guelph and they would be rewarded in the 40th minute as Erica Bain would take advantage of a mix up between netminder Lesia Bandura (Kitchener) and her defenders to put the visiting side up 1-0.
Guleph held their lead into the second half before Kaitlyn Barnett (Kitchener) returned from injury and finished off a goal mouth scramble to even the score. The Warrior tally was set up after a perfect free kick put into the box by Adrienne Goldsworthy (Waterloo).
The two teams exchanged chances down the stretch before Guelph mustered home the winning marker in the dying seconds of injury time. Bain would be stopped point blank but Whiteside picked up the rebound and put it past a helpless Bandura and defender Kiersten Colbran (Sarnia) who stepped in to help her goalie.
The loss puts Waterloo's record at 0-4 and the black and gold will look for their first win on the road next weekend in Oshawa when they face the UOIT Ridgebacks.

Western @ York
Rookie midfielder Charlene D'Mello scored the first goal of her career in the 48th minute to help the York University Lions women's soccer team tie the Western Mustangs 1-1 on Sunday (Sept. 8) at York Stadium.
The goal was the team's first of the season and improved the Lions' record to 0-2-2 on the year. For the Mustangs, it was the first game they did not win this season, but they remain undefeated with a 3-0-1 record.
Western took the lead immediately in this contest when Amanda Boyle found the back of the net in the first minute of play, her third goal of the season.
The Mustangs continued to apply pressure throughout the first half but could not put the ball past Lions goalkeeper Sarah Fiorini (Newmarket, Ont.).
The Lions came out flying in the second half and capitalized on the early scoring chance to tie the contest just three minutes into the second frame.
They continued to dominate play in the second and nearly got the go-ahead goal on multiple shots. The first came in the 56th minute, when a great scoring chance was negated when the refs called Vanessa Sansone (Toronto) offside.
The Lions nearly scored twice in the dying minutes of the game. In the 84th minute, Francesca Pedulla (Richmond Hill, Ont.) had a great shot on net but Western goalkeeper Tori Edgar (Oakville, Ont.) just got her hand on the ball and pushed it wide. Three minutes later, defender Taylor Lyons (Brampton, Ont.) fired a hard shot at the net from 35 yards out but Edgar managed to just push it over the cross bar and out of harms way.

TORONTO – The Ryerson Rams women’s soccer team picked up their first win of the season on Sunday, defeating the Nipissing Lakers 1-0 at Monarch Park Stadium.
Nicole Paiva (Waterloo, Ont.) scored her second goal of the season for the only marker of the match in the 21st minute. The victory snapped the Rams losing skid of 13 straight games dating back to last season.

I think we played well in the first half…and managed the game well in the second half to help us get the result in the end. We were very disciplined, organized, kept our shape and managed to do the right things at the back and see it through.”
Ryerson outshot the Lakers 7-2 on the afternoon and was able to create several good scoring chances throughout the match.

Nipissing’s best chance came in the dying moments as Kelly Dunk (Guelph, Ont.) challenged Ryerson keeper Rebecca Petrocelli (Woodbridge, Ont.) for a ball in the air. Dunk came away with the ball but her shot was kicked aside by a sliding Katrina Gonyea (Aurora, Ont.) to preserve the Ryerson lead.

Sept. 7 Queen's @ Ottawa
The top two teams of the OUA East division went head to head on Saturday, as the No. 2 Queen's Gaels and the No. 4 Ottawa Gee-Gees played to a scoreless draw.
Early in the game Queen's came out with all guns blazing quickly taking two shots on net in the first five minutes of play and dominated the first 10 minutes of the game. The Gee-Gees defence quickly got their act together by blocking passes and ensuring coverage to stop Queen's from infiltrating their wall. Defensemen and ex-Gael, Chantal McFetridge had a great game playing her former team as her coverage over striker Brenna Burton was on point. Moreover Chantal’s accurate passes to the forward line were key to the survival of uOttawa, allowing the forwards to move up and apply pressure. McFetridge played for Queen's while completing her undergraduate and is now playing against the team she once called her own.
When asked about how she felt about facing Queen's she said, “A lot of people ask me if it’s weird to play against my old team but for me it's not novel, but it’s nice to see them and play against them."
The rest of the first half went back and forth with both teams having possession of the ball. By the end of the first half the Gee-Gees got their first real opportunity when awarded a direct kick after being tackled numerous times by Queen's. The shot narrowly missed the mark and shortly thereafter the half time whistle blew.
The second half of the game was a real nail bitter, as both teams struggled to maintain command on the field grew between both teams. The garnet and gray put much more pressure offensively, out-shooting Queen's four to two. At the 55-minute mark , Queen's player Melissa Jung found her way through the Ottawa defence making it a one on one against goalkeeper Cynthia Leblanc who did an incredible job challenging the ball and stealing a great opportunity away from Queen's. Towards the end of the second half uOttawa fought their hearts out, gaining momentum from the speed of Sarah de Carufel and intense effort from midfielder Julia Francki. The Gee-Gees saw four corner kicks almost consecutively keeping the fans on their toes in anticipation of a goal. Although it was a scoreless game head coach Steve Johnson stated, “even though we did not do that well in the first half, the attitude was much better and more positive in the second half."
The Gee-Gees will face the number three-ranked team in the OUA east division, Carleton, on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at Matt Anthony Field at 7 p.m.

York @ Guelph
Guelph, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons women's soccer team (3-0-0) shutout the York Lions (0-2-1) today 3-0 for their third straight victory of the regular season at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
The rain slowed the Gryphons down today as the turf was more slippery than usual. The slippery conditions slowed a partial breakaway by Breanna Hall (Ottawa, Ont.) as she fell on the play before she was able to take a shot on goal. The game picked up as the rain subsided, and although York remained aggressive they were unable to keep up with Guelph's attack on their goal.
Erica Bain (Niagara Falls, Ont.) scored two goals for the Gryphons in the first half, with the first in the 24th minute and the second only 10 minutes later. York was only able to manage two shots on goal, while Guelph managed five in the first half.

Laurier @ Windsor
WINDSOR, Ont. - The Lancer women's soccer team shut out the Laurier Golden Hawks 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The win brings the Lancers to 2-1 on the season, and equals their total number of regular season wins from just a year ago.
The 58th minute goal by rookie midfielder Corinne Robinson helped secure all three points for the Blue & Gold.
The first scoring chance of the game went to Laurier, when Julie Mahey found room in the box and laid it off to teammate Kiara Reyes. The shot was blocked by the Lancer defense keeping the score tied at zero.
Later in the 29th minute, Robinson had her first scoring chance of the game when she went one on one with the Laurier keeper Katrina Ward. The low shot was going into the bottom left corner before Ward made a great finger tip save pushing the ball on to the post and out.
The Lancers and Golden Hawks both had great chances to go into their locker rooms up one, but the half ended 0-0.
Windsor's goal came in the 58th after the referee played an advantage giving the Lancers the opportunity to finish off a great team goal.
Cara Cirovski played a perfect through ball to Robinson who took it in stride and coolly slotted it home.
"The team did a great job in the transition and getting the ball back," said head coach Angelo Verardi. "We had great foresight on the run, and it was great pass by Cara."
In the 75th minute, Golden Hawks changed formation in an attempt to put pressure on the Lancers. Windsor, however, stayed strong to hold off the Laurier attack.
"We dropped one of our strikers back a bit just to help the midfielders out. We handled it good," said Verardi.
Tara Bernard-Rae earned her second shut out of the season, making two saves in the win.
The Lancers will look for their second straight win on Sunday afternoon when they take on the UOIT Ridgebacks at 1:00 p.m. at Alumni Field.

Laurentian @ Ryerson
TORONTO – The Ryerson Rams women’s soccer team (0-3-0) fell to the visiting Laurentian Lady Vees (2-0-1) by a score of 1-0 on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Monarch Park Stadium.
Laurentian’s Julie Lopez (Ottawa, Ont.) notched the game’s only goal in the 76th minute.
On a harmless looking play, Ryerson goalkeeper Rebecca Petrocelli (Woodbridge, Ont.) came out to smother the ball but on the rain-soaked turf she was unable to secure it and Lopez scooped it up and dribbled right to the empty goal line to slide the ball home.
Aside from the goal, Ryerson controlled much of the play throughout the contest. The Rams outshot the Lady Vees 5-3 and earned six corner kicks to Laurentian’s four. The Ryerson defence also forced eight offside calls against the Vees.
“I think we thoroughly deserved a point, if not a win today”, commented head coach Kevin Souter following the game. “It’s disappointing in that aspect but we’re a young team and I think we sometimes need these types of results to fuel the fire a little bit.”
One of the Rams strongest parts of Saturday’s game was the play of the defensive back line which got a boost as Katrina Gonyea (Aurora, Ont.) returned from injury to play her first game of the season.
Both teams had to battle consistent rain throughout the contest, providing additional challenges for the players.
“The first 20 minutes were difficult with puddles on the field. We couldn’t play our game which we had to deal with, but it’s the same for both teams. Our job as soccer players and coaches is to manage that and I think we did a good job”, said Souter.
The Rams return to action in search of their first win of the season on Sunday, Sept. 8 when they host the Nipissing Lakers at 12:00 p.m. at Monarch Park Stadium.
