W-Soccer Roundup: Toronto extends unbeaten streak to 10 games
Toronto 2 at Laurentian 2
The Laurentian Voyageurs women’s soccer team blew two leads and allowed a tying goal in the 90th minute in a 2-2 draw with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Sunday.
The first half of the game was played mainly within the centre third of the pitch, with both teams battling for possession in the rainy conditions. Laurentian opened the scoring at the 17th minute when Amanda Kwan (North York, ON) buried a ball off a scramble within the Blues penalty box. Toronto was quick to counter, and earned their first of the game on a shot from Olivia Gonsalves (Scarborough, ON) at the 24 minute mark. Each team created opportunities throughout the remaining minutes of play, however neither was able to score and the game remained deadlocked 1-1 at the half.
The Voyageurs fought a hard battle in the second half, losing many players to injury throughout the last 45 minutes of play. Laurentian was able to create goal scoring opportunities, however their defensive play and goalkeeping was their most prominent strength of the half. Goalkeeper Richele Greenwood (Mississauga, ON) kept her team in the game, making key saves and distributing the ball well into Toronto’s half. The Voyageurs were able to take the lead late in the half, when forward Julie Lopez (Ottawa, ON) scored at the 85th minute. Unfortunately for Laurentian, their lead was short lived, as the Blues found the back of the net at the 90th minute, tying the game for a 2-2 finish.
The women will be playing against the Nipissing Lakers on Friday at 5 p.m. Continue to follow your Voyagers at www.luvoyageurs.com for up-to-date news and results.

Windsor 0 at Laurier 4
WATERLOO, Ont. (Oct. 6, 2013) - After picking up a 5-0 win over Waterloo on Friday night, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's soccer team was looking to give the Windsor Lancers a similar welcome when they hosted them Sunday afternoon. The Hawks made sure to show the Lancers that the loss they suffered in their previous meeting with Windsor wasn't going to happen again, shutting them out 4-0.
The Hawks opened up the scoring at the 15 minute mark when Oakville, Ont., native Julie Maheu netted her second of the season to gain the early lead. That was followed by a Hawks corner late in the first half that saw Suzanne Boroumand of Kitchener, Ont., head home her first of the season.
The second half was reminiscent of Friday's game as Emily Brown of Waterloo, Ont., took over the scoring effort. While she didn't duplicate the record-setting five goals she potted against the Warriors, the two she added in the second half put any chance of a comeback far from the Lancers minds.
Hawks keeper Maggie Carmichael of Orono, Ont., earned her second shutout in a row by stopping five shots.
With the win, combined with a tie between Guelph (7-5-1) and Western (6-0-5), the Hawks (6-2-3) moved closer to catching the two teams ahead of them in the OUA West standings. Only two points separate the three clubs in the race for top spot in the division.
Laurier will next see action on Saturday, Oct. 12 when they travel to Toronto to face the York Lions. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Ryerson 1 at Nipissing 2
After a heartbreaking loss Saturday afternoon to the University of Toronto, the Nipissing Lakers women’s soccer team showed some real grit Sunday.
Mallory Archer came on as a substitute and scored in the 61st minute, and just five minutes later, Valaine Confesor scored what would be the game-winner to give the Lakers a 2-1 win over the Ryerson Rams.
The Rams scored a goal in injury time to break Carlee Bennard’s shutout bid, but the Lakers held on for the win.
The Lakers peppered the Rams net, especially in the second half and were rewarded with two goals and a big win.
The Lakers will look to build on this success and an overall strong weekend heading into Friday’s clash with Laurentian on the road, and Sunday’s tilt with Trent at home as they look to finish the year on a strong note.

Western 0 at Guelph 0
Guelph, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphon's women's soccer team (7-5-1) tied the Western Mustangs (6-0-5) 0-0 at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
Stellar goalkeeping by Alexandra King kept Western from putting any points on the board, saving six shots in the first half of the game, and three in the second half.
Breanna Hall and Jennifer Dunn both had one shot on the net in the first half of the game, with Danielle Naylor taking the only shot in the second half of play. Western outshot Guelph nine shots to three.
The Mustangs started the game strong, keeping possession of the ball for the majority of the first half. Though the Gryphons capitalized on a few mistakes made by Western players, they found it hard to beat defenders when they made it into Western territory. Though Guelph played physically, Western was able to use their speed to overtake the Gryphons.
Guelph came out strong in the second half however, keeping Western away from the front of their net. Western found themselves losing possession of the ball in front of the box, and the Gryphons were able to clear the ball. Ultimately, the two teams were evenly matched and the final score was 0-0.
The Guelph Gryphons women's soccer team hits the field again on Friday, Oct. 11 at 1:00 p.m. to face the York Lions in Toronto.

UOIT 1 at McMaster 0
The Marauders followed one of their most encouraging matches of the season with one of their most disappointing on Sunday. McMaster's women's soccer team conceded a goal in the final moments of the first half, and were held off the scoresheet en route to a 1-0 loss at the hands of the UOIT Ridgebacks.
Defender Sara Voisin scored the game's only goal for the Ridgebacks (5-5-2), who leapfrogged the Marauders (4-3-5) for fourth place in the OUA West division with Sunday's result.
Neither team threatened goal often over the course of the afternoon, with most of the play taking part in the midfield. Sunday's was a choppy affair where the teams closed down early and often, and extended strings of passes were rare. The Ridgebacks repeatedly looked to unlock their forwards with long, hopeful balls through the middle, and it was one such lob that caught the Marauders off balance just before the end of the opening half.
UOIT pressed forward in numbers as the two teams neared stoppage time, and a lobbed through ball from the midfield found open space amid McMaster's back four. Voisin was nearest, and outraced Marauder goalkeeper Brittany Duffey to the ball, prodding it past Duffey and into the open net from the edge of the box.
The Marauders searched fruitlessly for an equalizer in the second half, and were let down time and time again by their final ball. When a pass did reach forwards Emma Mangialardi and Anne Yeboah, they found themselves hopelessly alone in possession. McMaster rarely appeared a danger to score as UOIT comfortably held out for the three points.
The Marauders will look to rebound on the road when they return to action on Wednesday. McMaster travels to London to take on the Western Mustangs, with that game slated to kick off at 6:00 p.m.

Brock 1 at Waterloo 2
The Warriors picked up their second win of the season and first on home field after defeating the Brock Badgers 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Warrior Field.
It was Waterloo who held most of the pressure in the early going and the Warriors would be rewarded off a corner kick fired home by Tara Butterworth (Waterloo) her second of the season. Brock would tilt the momentum back in their favour in the late going of the opening half but keeper Kala Studens (Sault Ste. Marie) would keep it a 1-0 lead into the break.
The Warriors would again come out with jump in the second half and 15 minutes in second year forward Emily Deckert (Kitchener) would pot her first career goal in the black and gold. The Deckert goal in the 60th minute gave Waterloo a comfortable 2-0 lead but Brock had other ideas.
Only three minutes later the Badgers cut into the Warriors lead on a goal by Kelly Miller, her third of the season. Brock would continue to pour the pressure on but the Waterloo defence would stand tall and keep the Badgers off the board to pick up the 2-1 win.
Deckert was named the Waterloo player of the game while fifth year midfielder Lindsay McDonald earned MVP honours for Brock.
The Warriors will be back in action again next Sunday when the welcome the UOIT Ridgebacks (4-5-2) to Warrior Field for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

Ottawa 6 at Trent 0
The no. 1 ranked women’s soccer team in the CIS improved its record to 10-0-2 thanks to a 6-0 victory at Trent University on Sunday afternoon. Second-year midfielder Sheniz Eryulzlu scored twice for Ottawa, and OUA scoring leader Pilar Khoury added her twelfth goal of the season.
It was the second multi-goal game in as many weekends for Ottawa native Eryuzlu, who also notched two goals against Nipissing and now has six this season. That moves her into a tie for sixth in the OUA scoring charts.
Fifth-year midfielder Chantal McFetridge also scored her sixth goal of the season, potting the game’s final goal at the 78 minute mark. Five Gee-Gees have now scored six goals or more through the first 12 games as the team stands with 50 goals for with four games remaining. The uOttawa program record is 57 goals in a regular season, set in 2011.
Khoury opened the scoring at the 41-minute mark, but the goals came in rapid succession after that. Eryuzlu potted her first of the game just before halftime.
Rookie defender Hannah Landry opened the second half with her first goal of the season at the 48-minute mark, which was followed by another Eryuzlu strike just five minutes later. Third-year Julia Francki rounded out the scoring at 64-minutes.

Ottawa 1 at Queen’s 0
The Gee-Gees earned their sixth straight victory with a 1-0 win they had to grind out over the Queen’s Gaels on Saturday afternoon in Kingston.
“We scored early, capitalizing on a Queen's turnover,” said head coach Steve Johnson after the match. “Our defensive play was very good today as we kept our discipline throughout the match.”
Pilar Khoury was the goal scorer who gave the Gee-Gees the boost ahead in the second minute. She took a pass from Faythe Lou and made no mistake and, in the process, added to her league-leading goal tally.
Johnson found it to be a physical game throughout. He was pleased with how disciplined his team was defensively.
Queen’s directed 11 shots on goal but could not solve keeper Cynthia LeBlanc who recorded the shutout. Ottawa sent seven of their own shots on goal.
The win gives Ottawa some breathing room in the standings, now eight points up on Queen’s and four up on Toronto who occupy second in the OUA East.
The Gee-Gees controlled the ball well on offence and strung passes together with precision.
Johnson said his team needed to play with confidence, and believe in their ability to perform in difficult circumstances. They did just that on Saturday and secured an important three points against a quality opponent they may see again in the playoffs.
The Gee-Gees visit Trent tomorrow to take on the Excalibur rounding out the weekend on the road.

Ryerson 0 at Laurentian 4
The Laurentian Women's Soccer team is starting the second half of it’s season, and is looking to earn points in every single contest from here on out. The Voyageurs did exactly that on Saturday against the Ryerson Rams, beating their opponents handily in a 4-0 victory.
The Voyageurs opened the scoring early, when Amanda Kwan (North York, ON) scored at the five minute mark. Laurentian was able to put the Rams under pressure throughout the first half, getting a total of five shots on net and earning three corner kicks. The second goal of the game came from Voyageur rookie, Carlee Parisotto (Sudbury, ON), who netted her first OUA goal to give Laurentian a 2-0 lead at half.

Ferguson (Kitchener, ON) and Madison Beaudry (Sudbury, ON) both scored in the last 15 minutes of play, putting the Voyageurs up by four to finish the game. Toronto 1 at Nipissing 0

Coming on as a substitute, Christine Zwimpfer scored the lone goal of the game, giving the University of Toronto the win, and sending the Lakers to defeat.

McMaster 2 at York 1
The York University Lions women's soccer team let a 1-0 lead slip away on Saturday (Oct. 5), falling to the McMaster Marauders by a score of 2-1 at York Stadium.
The three points were big for the Marauders, who now hold a three-point lead on the Lions after the two teams entered the contest tied in the standings. The loss drops the Lions to 3-3-5 on the season, while the Marauders improved to 4-2-5.
The Lions came sprinting out of the gate, as their speed advantage was evident from the beginning. Utilizing short passes and the quickness of their forwards, York's first chance came just 11 minutes in with Vanessa Sansone (Toronto) splitting the McMaster defence and rifling a hard shot attempt into the arms of goaltender Brittany Duffey (Markham, Ont.).
Sansone would attempt to convert another shot in the 25th minute on a hard strike off of a breakaway, but Duffey was there to record the save once again. She would finish with eight on the day.
York's punishing attack was relentless though, and Adeife Adekusibe (Nobleton, Ont.) would eventually solve McMaster's defence just moments later in the 27th minute on a beautiful second-effort goal to claim the first lead of the game, 1-0.
The fast pace continued the other way, however, and the Marauders would reclaim the draw on a crossing pass in front of the Lions goal to Stephanie Davis (Mississauga, Ont.) in the 31st minute.
The scored remained tied after the first half.
The Marauders wasted no time getting the lead in the second half, as Emma Mangialardi (Oakville, Ont.) capitalized on an early chance in the 46th minute to break the draw. The early score would be the only goal recorded for the remainder of the half, despite Sansone's continued assault on Duffey. Ultimately, the Lions were unable to convert on their multitude of chances.
Saturday's game was the only one of the week for the Lions. They will return to York Stadium on Friday (Oct. 11) to take on the second-place Guelph Gryphons at 1pm.

Windsor 0 at Guelph 7
Guelph, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphon's women's soccer team defeated the Windsor Lancer's 7-0 at the Gryphon Soccer Complex on Saturday.
A total of six Gryphons figured into the scoring in the teams offensive outburst. The win pushes the Gryphon's to 7-5-0 on the season while the Lancer's drop to 4-5-2.
Guelph started the opening half on fire, completely dominating the Lancer's. In the 15th minute Courtney Whiteside (Guelph, Ont.) broke the deadlock when she sprung in on a breakaway and beat the Lancer's keeper. Shortly after that in the 17th minute Brianne Hall (Ottawa) made it 2-0 Guelph. Hall danced around several Lancer defenders and beat the keeper for the score.
Hall had a great opportunity to pot her second of the match in the 29th minute when she streaked inside Windsor's box in the 29th minute. Her shot attempt was just wide of the goal. However Hall was not to be stopped. In the 36th minute she netted her second of the match on a breakaway goal, flicking the ball past the keeper with the outside of her right foot.
Jenny Dunn (Vancouver) scored in the 36th minute off a free kick from Erica Bain (Niagara Falls, Ont.) to make it 4-0 Guelph. The score remained that way at the half.
The Gryphon's continued the onslaught in the second half as Tori Cadman (Burlington, Ont.) converted a Katie Casucii (Niagara Falls, Ont.) free kick on a header to make it 5-0 Gryphon's. Casucii scored a goal for herself later on in the 71st minute to make it 6-0 Gryphon's.
First-year player Meredith Langston (Aurora, Ont.) had a strong half with numerous chances to score her first of the year but was unable to convert. Julia Shugg (Burlington, Ont.) made it 7-0 in the 89th minute on a beautiful breakaway goal. Goalkeepers Alexandra King (Ottawa) and Meghan Klimas (Russell, Ont.) combined for the shut out.
The Gryphon's look to win their next contest on tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. as they host the Western Mustangs at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

UOIT 2 at Brock 1
ST CATHARINES, Ont. – The Brock University women's soccer team (2-5-4 OUA) lost a hard fought 2-1 decision to the UOIT Ridgebacks (4-5-2 OUA) at home on Saturday afternoon.
The Badgers struck first in the 29th minute when St. Catharines native Kara Ross scored off of a Brock free kick just outside the penalty area. The ball was deflected on its way through to the goal beating UOIT's keeper Melissa MacKinnon.
Brock took a 1-0 lead into halftime but the Ridgebacks came out determined to put the pressure back on the Badgers.
UOIT got the tying goal in the 61st minute as Kayla De Souza took advantage of a lucky break to make the score 1-1.
Fifteen minutes later, Brock was called for an unlucky handball inside the penalty area resulting in a penalty shot for the Ridgebacks.
UOIT brought up midfielder Shannon Lucas to take the penalty and she made no mistake sneaking her shot just past the outstretched Jenna Vasiliaskas (Burlington, Ont.) for the game winner.
Brock was unable to take advantage of being up a player after a red card was given to Nicole Zajac for a hard foul committed in the 71st minute.
The Badgers will take to the road on Sunday in a matchup against the Waterloo Warriors (1-9-1 OUA) at 1 p.m.

Waterloo 0 at Laurier 5
WATERLOO, Ont. (Oct. 4, 2013) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's soccer team was looking to recover from a two game winless streak, their longest of the season, Friday evening when they hosted the Waterloo Warriors. The Hawks would get the win and then some as they cruised to a 5-0 victory thanks to a very special offensive performance.
The Hawks wasted no time ensuring they got on the board with Emily Brown of Waterloo, Ont., netting her fifth goal of the season at the seven minute mark of the game. That was just a taste for Brown who would go on to add markers in the 20th and 43rd minutes to send the Hawks into the half with a three goal advantage over the Warriors.
In the second half it quickly became apparent that Brown intended to repeat her OUA top goal scorer performance from last season in a single game as she added two more early in the half to give the Hawks their final tally of five. With her performance, Brown set a Golden Hawks record for most goals in a single game and vaults herself into second place in the OUA scoring race. The previous record of four goals was set by Tammy Scurr of Kitchener, Ont., back in 2003 against these same Warriors.
Earning the shutout for the Hawks was keeper Maggie Carmichael of Orono, Ont., who faced four shots in the game.
Laurier will now look to Sunday when they host the Windsor Lancers. Windsor dealt the Hawks one of their two losses this season and the purple and gold will be out looking to return the favour to the Lancers. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at University Stadium.

RMC 0 at Queen’s 8
KINGSTON, Ont. (October 2, 2013) - In their second straight 8-0 win, the No. 7 Gaels bested the RMC Paladins at the West Campus Field on Wednesday night.
Breanna Burton (Ottawa) opened the floodgates in the 17th minute, when she took a pass from Rachel Radu (Ottawa) in stride, stepped around Paladins keeper Emily Barnard, and buried the ball into the empty net. Chipping the keeper from 25 yards out, Radu got a goal of her own in the 20th minute. Burton added another first-half tally, tapping in a cross from Jennifer Siu (London, Ont.) in the 34th minute.
Riley Filion (Alexandria, Ont.) finished another Siu cross to make it 4-0 at halftime, and netted another early in the second frame, giving her five goals in her last two games.
The Paladins' best chance came in the 72nd minute, after the referee called a handball against Alex Blanchard (North Vancouver, B.C.) inside the Gaels 18-yard box, giving RMC a penalty kick. Rhianna Koopman's attempt missed the left post by inches.
The Gaels finished the game with a pair of goals from Monique Czaczkowski (Thunder Bay, Ont.) and a last-minute blast from Brittany Almeida (Elginburg, Ont.).
On Homecoming weekend, the Gaels (6-1-3) host the No. 1 Ottawa Gee-Gees (8-0-2) on the West Campus Field at noon on Saturday.

Western 4 at Windsor 0
WINDSOR, Ont. – Goals from four different players helped the Western Mustangs women's soccer team continue their unbeaten season with a 4-0 shutout victory over the Windsor Lancers on Wednesday night.
With the win the Mustangs remain in first place in the OUA West and improve to 6-0-4 on the season while the Lancers fall to 4-4-2. It was also Western's second win of the year against Windsor as the Mustangs posted a 6-0 victory at TD Stadium on the season's opening weekend.
Lauren Winquist, Amanda Boyle, Sarah Deakin and Aoi Ichiyama contributed the offence in the win with Tori Edgar recording her sixth shutout of the season.
Winquist put Western on the scoreboard early in the first half netting a goal at the 13-minute mark. Before the break Boyle increased the Mustangs lead as she racked up the second goal of the game and her fifth of the season to make it 2-0 Western heading into the break.
The Mustangs momentum continued into the second half and Deakin added Western's third goal of the game at the 57-minute mark. Ichiyama followed up just four minutes later with a fourth consecutive Western goal, giving the team a 4-0 advantage over the Lancers.
