OUA ANNOUNCES 2013 WEST DIVISION WOMEN'S SOCCER MAJOR AWARDS AND ALL-STARS
For the second consecutive season, Laurier’s Emily Brown (Waterloo, Ont.) has been named the west division player of the year. After setting a Laurier record for goals in a season with 15 last year, Brown took her game to another level in 2013 and broke her own team record for goals in a season by scoring 18 times. Slow to find her stride in 2013, the 5-8 striker scored just four times through the first nine games before going on an incredible run to close out the season that saw her score 14 times in the Hawks final seven games. That run of scoring was kicked off by a five goal game against the Waterloo Warriors on October 4 which set a new team record for goals in a single game. The third-year striker is already a decorated athlete, having won league MVP last season and rookie of the year in 2011. She is also a first team all-star.
Brown is joined on the OUA first team by teammates Kelsey Tikka (Thunder Bay, Ont.), Julie Maheau (Oakville, Ont.) and Katie Bishop (Surrey, B.C.). Tikka makes her third appearance on the OUA first team. The aggressive central defender led a strong Golden Hawks backline, helping to limit the opposition to 13 goals on the season. Midfielders Bishop and Maheu contributed three and two goals, respectively, to finish 2-3 in team scoring. Second-year defender Sarah Farano (Oakville, Ont.) is an OUA second team all-star for the first time in her career.
The Western Mustangs were undefeated through the regular season and boast a major award winner and six all-stars on their roster. Jenna White (Winnipeg, Man.) is the OUA west division rookie of the year. The first-year defender logged major minutes for the Mustangs, she started in all 16 regular contests and scored one goal. She is the first member of the Mustangs to win the rookie of the year award since 2003. White is also a first team all-star. In addition to White, the Mustangs are represented on the OUA first team in each area of the pitch. Second-year goalkeeper Tori Edgar is a first team all-star on the merit of her nine-shutouts. The Oakville, Ont., native backstopped the Stangs to a league best eight goals against on the season. Third-year midfielder Tianna Deluzio (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) and first-year striker Amanda Boyle (Vaughan, Ont.) round out the Mustangs represented on the first team. Deluzio notched one goal and Boyle found the net six times. It is the first all-star recognition for both athletes.
Second-year Lauren Winquist led the Mustangs in scoring and is a second team all-star. The London Ont., native tallied eight goals as a striker. Midfielder Jess Friend (Bowmanville, Ont.) is also a second team all-star.
The Guelph Gryphons finished the season 7-6-3 and send four athletes to the OUA all-star team. Fifth-year defender Lauren Hampton was the Gryphons’ sole representative on the OUA first team. This is the Calgary, Alta., native’s second all-star recognition after being named to the second team a year ago. Alexandra King (Ottawa) stands in net for the OUA second team. The second-year goalkeeper recorded an 89% save percentage and six shutouts. Midfielder Courtney Whiteside (Guelph, Ont.) and forward Erica Bain (Niagara Falls, Ont.) finished 1-2 in team scoring with seven and five goals, respectively. Both are named to the OUA west division second team.
The UOIT Ridgebacks surprised the opposition in 2013, fighting their way to a third place finish and the right to host an OUA west division quarter-final game. For their efforts, three UOIT players are OUA second team all-stars. Midfielders Sonia Sampogna (Toronto) and Kayla De Souza (Scarborough, Ont.) and defender Kylie Bordeleau (Cambridge, Ont.) are all-stars for the first time in their careers. Sampgona led the upstart Ridgebacks with six goals on the season.
Defenders Shannon Wood (Brampton, Ont.) and Taylor Lyons (Brampton, Ont.) and midfielder Sarah Wong (Toronto) of the York Lions are OUA all-stars. Wood scored a single goal from the backfield en route to being named to the second team alongside Lyons. Crafty midfielder Wong tallied four goals and makes her first appearance on the OUA west division first team.
Rookie Marisa Bremner (Barrie, Ont.) is the sole Marauder all-star. The versatile defender started in 13 games for McMaster and notched one goal.
Western head coach Martin Painter was named OUA west coach of the year for guiding the Mustangs to their 11-0-5 season. A former Mustang all-star himself, Painter has turned around the women’s soccer program after inheriting a 5-5-4 team in 2011. Painter has attracted key recruits and pieced together what is a young and talent-packed squad. This is his first coach of the year recognition.
