Algoma's Collison wrestles to silver medal
Rookie Broderick Collison wrestled his way to a silver medal this weekend at the McMaster Invitational in Hamilton, Ontario.
"Mr. Collison's podium finish this weekend at the 54 kg weight class underscores the idea that hard work and dedication pays off. Our athletes have been working very hard over the past number of weeks, and in spite of the fact that we have a young team, Mr. Collison's finish shows that we are already at a level where we can compete at a high level and we look forward to the coming weeks," said Allan Middleton, Assistant Coach of the squad.
From Windsor, Ontario, the first-year wrestler beat Jake Sullivan (Queen's University) and Salam Jaberjhil (Team Impact), 10-0. Collison lost 13-6 to Kingston Wong (Brock University) to earn the silver in 54-kilogram weight class.
"Even though I got off to a slow start, I was able to pick up the pace and finish strong. I feel that this tournament was a good opportunity for me to realize what I need to work on before competing at York in 3 weeks," added Collison after the tournament.
Also on the mats was rookie Earl McKinney, who finished in 6th in the men's 65-kilogram division.

Marauders win silver at home invitational
Before they play host to the OUA Championships in February, the McMaster wrestling teams brought together many of the top teams in Canada for their annual invitational tournament Saturday.
True to their form of a year ago, when the Marauders were both the OUA and CIS men's runners up, McMaster won team silver on the men's side at the Burridge Gym, while the Marauders women finished seventh.
A pair of exceptional performances in the 90kg weight class led the way for the Marauders, as Joban Phulka and Ameen Aghamirian each mopped up the field on the way to an all-McMaster final, where Phulka came out on top for the gold.
Continuing the trend of standout Mac efforts in the upper weight classes, Scott MacLellan won silver in the 100kg division, losing out to Shaddy El-Nahas of York in the final.
Rookie Ben Zahra gave an early demonstration of his talent Saturday, winning silver in the 76kg weight class while veteran teammate Ahmed Shamiya was forced to settle for bronze. Both Marauders came up against eventual champion Alex Moore of Vanier College.
Rounding out the medals for the McMaster men, Erik Joy won bronze in the 65kg weight class, getting the better of Josh Malu of Team Impact in his final match.
The lone medal for the McMaster women went to Jenna Leslie, who took silver after losing out to Vanier College's Laurence Beauregard in the 55kg final.

Lions win four medals at McMaster Invitational
York University Lions wrestlers combined to win four medals, including two gold medals, at the McMaster Invitational in Hamilton, Ont., on Saturday (Oct. 29).
Only a small contingent was on hand to compete, but the Lions still reached the podium on the men's side with a third-place finish. The women ended up in fifth place with only three wrestlers competing.
Leading the way with gold medals were Alexandria Town (Scarborough, Ont.) and Shady El-Nahas (Toronto). Town was victorious in the women's 59kg division, bringing her season record to 7-0 with all her wins coming by pin or technical superiority. Among her victories on Saturday was one of Brock's Hannah Taylor, a former junior national medallist.

Also picking up medals at McMaster were Sebastian Galzote (Thornhill, Ont.) and Mohab El-Nahas (Mississauga, Ont.). Galzote won the silver in the men's 65kg division, wrestling up a class at the meet, while El-Nahas claimed the bronze in the men's 90kg weight class.
The next varsity event for the Lions will be their own York Open on Sunday, Nov. 20 at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
