Thunderbirds compete at York Open
The Algoma Thunderbirds wrestling team was in Toronto on Sunday competing at the annual York Open tournament.
"Our squad started off strong, beginning the competition with a 5-0 record, but ran into some tough competition in the later rounds. For our young team, this was a great experience and allowed us to work on many of the concepts the student-athletes have been working for the season. Being the last competition for our team before the winter break, we have plenty of time to work on the mistakes that were made and to start off the second half of the season strong at the Brock Open."
Broderick Collison finished in fourth place in the men's 54-kg weight class. Collison went 2-2 on the mats.
Noodin Shawanda also finished in fourth place. He went 1-2 in the men's 57-kg division.
Stephen Kreyenbuhl earned sixth place in the men's 82-kg weight class. He went 2-3 on the mats.

Three Mustangs claim medal at York Open
Caleb Rutner (72 kg), rookie Chris Nikolaou (57 kg), and Michalia Walls (67 kg) led the Mustangs at the York Open, each taking bronze in their respective weight class.
Rutner's only loss of the tournament came courtesy of national team member and Brock wrestler Cruiz Manning. The two also met in the final of last week's Greater Toronto Open, with Manning ultimately taking the title.
First year wrestler Nicolaou's medal comes after the previous two tournaments saw him just miss out on a podium position in fourth place. Meanwhile, Walls continues to be the leading competitor for the women's team as she has finished as one of the top three wrestlers in every competition this season.
The Mustangs will be back in action this weekend, when they compete at the Ontario Senior Championships in St. Catharines.
