STRONG SHOWING FROM BROCK AND LAURIER ON OPENING WEEKEND
The Western Mustangs and the Brock Badgers opened the 2004 lacrosse season with Brock handing Western their first loss of the season in a 14-1 victory. Lisa Moebus was the lone scorer for the Mustangs but it was not enough to beat the tough Badger team who had seven different players score a goal in the game. Leading the scoring for the Badgers was Heidi Krasnozon who had four goals and five assists while teammate Heather Stephens also helped the team to their first victory with three of her own goals.
In the game between McMaster and Guelph, the Marauders crushed the Gryphons 20-8 with stellar performances from Amber Darroch and Erin Bournes. Amber led the team in goals with seven while Bournes contributed six goals and five assists in the win. The OUA champion Wilfrid Laurier Hawks continued their winning ways this season defeating the University of Toronto 11-5 in their first game of the season. Katie Godfrey and Leanne Chu scored two goals a piece for the Blues but it was not enough to defeat the talented Hawks team who had 8 team members score at least one goal on the day.
The Gryphons suffered another loss on the day as the Western Mustangs came back from an earlier defeat to narrowly beat out Guelph 6-5. Caitlin Orth and Lisa Howe led the scoring for the Mustangs with two goals a piece while Sara White of the Gryphons had a strong showing with one goal and one assist in the game.
In Sunday's action, Brock continued to dominate, winning both their games in convincing fashion. Against McMaster Jess Whillens and Lisa Zatylny scored two goals in the Badgers 10-5 victory while Heidi Krasnozon continued her strong play with five goals and three assists in Brock's crushing 18-4 win over the Gryphons. Queen's were able to defeat McGill 15-9 with the help of Golden Gael's Faye Pang's five goals while the game between Toronto and McGill ended in a 9-9 tie with Katie Godfrey leading all scoring with three goals. McMaster was able to bounce back after loosing to Brock earlier in the day to defeat Western 8-5. Ashley Hill scored half of the Marauders goals while teammate Erin Bournes demonstrated her strong scoring ability with three more goals in the game.
