The uOttawa selection for the OUA Women of Influence award this season is Sarah de Carufel, a two-sport varsity athlete who has represented the university at two separate CIS championships this season. A fourth-year student, she also recently completed her undergraduate thesis in civil engineering.
Sarah is a striker on the Gee-Gees women’s soccer team which won the 2012 OUA championship and was the number-one ranked team in the country for six weeks. She missed half of the regular season this year with a concussion, but came back to make an impact in the playoffs.
In her most productive season in 2011, de Carufel scored eight goals in the regular season, which tied her for the team lead and sixth in the OUA.
When she’s not on the pitch, de Carufel can be found training with the Gee-Gees track and field team where she is a standout sprinter. The 5-foot-1 native of Boisbriand Que. posted a top twelve time in the CIS regular season in the 60m, helping the Gee-Gees women’s track team to be ranked as high as 5th in the CIS Top Ten. She ran a personal best at the 2013 OUA Championships with a time of 7.63 which gave her a fourth place finish, and she finished the year with a ninth place finish at the CIS Championships.
In addition to being a key member of two Top Ten teams, Sarah has maintained high marks in the challenging Civil Engineering program at uOttawa. Studying in both French and English, de Carufel is currently on track to be an Academic All-Canadian this season. Her GPA for this fall’s semester was 9.3 out of 10.
What is your proudest academic achievement?
I was able to complete an undergraduate thesis in civil engineering. I also contributed to several graduate research projects and was published twice. I was able to complete all those projects and my classes in English, which is not my first language.
What is your proudest athletic achievement?
I participated in the CIS championship twice during a year in two different sports, soccer and track and field. As a striker on the soccer team, my contribution helped us win the OUA championship and finish fourth at CIS. As part of the track team, I finished fourth in the OUA Championship in the 60 meter dash and got automatic qualifications for CIS with my time of 7.63 - a personal best. I finished 9th in the 60 meters at CIS and was also a member of the 4x200m and 4x400m relay teams which ranked 8th in the country.
What is your most memorable community related moment?
Between my busy workload at school and training for my varsity teams, I am left with very little personal time. However, back home, my family has been helping to socialise dogs for the Mira foundation. These dogs are then sent for training where they will learn to assist persons with disabilities. Altogether, we raised 13 dogs.
What woman has most influenced you, and why?
I’m inspired by positive, strong, independent women who strive to excel and achieve goals. Especially my mother, women I have always admired and who has always encouraged me to pursue my dreams.
What are your future plans?
For my final year of eligibility, I would like to improve my performance in my respective sports and once again participate at the nationals. School wise, after finishing my last year of undergraduate, I would like to do my master in structure in civil engineering. For track, on a short term period, this summer I would like to participate at the national championship and Canada Games.
