Bone, Stewart set new Western records at Don Wright Meet
LONDON, Ont. - The annual Don Wright Team Challenge is always a highlight of the Western track and field calendar, and the 30th edition held on Saturday at Thompson Arena definitely proved to be a highlight of the season so far.
Two Mustangs broke arena, meet, and Western records at the event while another two Mustangs broke meet records.
Fresh off of breaking a decade-old Western record in the pole vault last weekend, first-year Mustang Robin Bone decided that once wasn’t enough, and shattered the record that she set just seven days prior. Bone posted a vault of 4.02m, surpassing the 3.92m vault from last weekend, also surpassing arena and meet records set by Waterloo’s Dana Ellis in 2000 and 2001 respectively. Robin is currently ranked 2nd in the CIS behind Olympian Melanie Blouin.
Also in his first full season competing for the Mustangs Taylor Stewart fell just short of a Western long jump record last weekend but would make no mistake on Saturday, breaking Trevino Betty’s 19-year-old mark of 7.48m with a 7.57m jump. Taylor’s record breaking leap not only puts him on top of the overall Western record book, but also gives him the meet and arena record as well with both of those being set by Betty with identical 7.45m jumps in 1993 and 1995.
Matt Diston, last year's CIS silver medallist vaulted 4.81m surpassing Toronto's Ross Girvin's meet record of 4.80m set in 1985.
Not to be outdone by his field event teammates, Western hurdler Matt Brisson moved to the top of the CIS leaderboard posting his best season opening time of 8.00 seconds in the 60m hurdles. Not only does Brisson’s time put him in first place in all of CIS it also tied a meet record set in 1987 by Al Hough.
Other highlights that move athletes into the CIS top nine included:
Scott Leitch posting his fastest ever season opening time in the 600m, taking first place with a time of 1.19.63, falling just shy of breaking both the meet and arena record. Leitch’s time now leaves him ranked first in the 600m in all of CIS track and field. Leitch lead his teammates Matt Muldoon and Triphon Moodie to personal best runs of 1:20.74 and 1:21.23, ranking them 3rd and 4th in the CIS respectively.
Caroline Ehrhardt improved her season's triple jump distance to 12.39 for silver and remains in the 2nd spot in the CIS. She also long jumped 5.61 finishing 3rd in the event and 7th in the CIS rankings.
Mila Simulik improved her season's best in the triple jump to 11.89m, placing 3rd in the meet as well as 4th in the country.
The women's 4 X 400m team of Cassandra McCaig, Sarah Clancy, Lauren Clancy and Jen Barbon ran 3:55.46 for the win and now rank 5th in the CIS.
The men's 4 x 400m team of Brent Bates, Brayden Bullen, Chris Cauley and Triphon Moodie won in 3:27.85 and sit 7th in the CIS.
Ike Omoruna was 2nd in the 60m with a time of 6.94 and ranks 7th in the CIS.

The fourth-year veteran Walsh led the race from start to finish, and wrapped up the gold medal in 2:31.02, while Barry (2:32.99) and Bowen (2:33.92) followed close behind.
