TRACK & FIELD ROUNDUP: Results from the Windsor Team Challenge and National Capital Invitational
On February 9, the uOttawa Gee-Gees track and field team competed at its final home meet of the season, hosting the seventh annual uOttawa Winter National Invitational. With many of the team's veterans taking a week off to concentrate on their individual training and studies it was time for the Gee-Gees rookies to shine, as two school records fell on Saturday. The Gee-Gees men’s team is still ranked second in the CIS Top 10, while the women are ranked eighth in the country.
For the second straight week, rookie Mohamed Souleiman broke a school record as he ran a 2:27.03 in the men’s 1000m race. At the New Balance Collegiate Invitational last week, Souleiman had broken the uOttawa record in the 800m event. Fellow rookie middle distance runner Emma Galbraith also set a new school record in the women’s 1000m race, finishing in first place in a time of 2:46.71. Another first-year runner in Charlotte Gardner also finished first, in the women’s 600m event with a time of 1:33.44.
Another notable result came from sophomore Toluwalope Makinde’s performance in the men’s 60m dash, as he hit a new personal best in the event, finishing in 6.97s during the qualifiers—it was the first time Makinde had broken the seven-second barrier. Fourth-year sprinter Sarah De Carufel led the way for the Gee-Gees in the women’s 60m dash, placing second in a time of 7.79 seconds. The top Gee-Gees result in the field events came from veteran Krista Sipprell, who finished second in the women’s triple jump with a top jump of 10.76m.
